The doctor jumped in surprise when he saw Wendy faint. All of them knew who Wendy was. They could not afford to slacken.

The doctor ran over to check on Wendy. "Quick!" he said. "Take her to the ergency room now!"

Michael, Mrs. Lucas, and the rest had only just left the ergency room. Now, they were all standing outside the sa room again. This ti, it was Wendy lying in there. Everyone was more anxious and worried than before.

Wendy was pregnant. Michael did not dare to imagine the consequences should anything bad happen to her. Mrs. Lucas, Mary, and Leah were all crying together.

Michael squatted on the floor, his head in his hands.

Unlike the won, Michael did not make a sound, but his eyes were extrely red.

Soon, Michael felt a heavy blow to his back. He knew it was Mrs. Lucas even though he wasn’t looking.

"Why didn’t you take good care of Wendy? What kind of husband are you?" Mrs.

Lucas was furious. She rained blows upon Michael with her walking stick.

Michael did not stop her, neither did he say a word. He let her continue hitting him.

It seed that the more his body hurt, the better his heart would feel.

Mrs. Lucas knew that Michael was not to bla. After hitting him, her heart started to ache.

Fortunately, the doors to the ergency room opened at this point. Michael ran over to the doctor as fast as he could. He gazed at Wendy with red-rimd eyes as they wheeled her out.

Wendy was lying on the gurney with her eyes shut tight. He gripped her hand tightly and walked together with the gurney. Mary and Mrs. Lucas followed close behind.

Michael asked, "Doctor, how is Wendy?"

The doctor adjusted his glasses and said, "Mrs. Lucas is too worn out physically and emotionally, and that caused her to faint. She’s also got a bit of spotting.

"While the pregnancy has already passed the first trister and should be stable, Mrs. Lucas is weak. She has to take better care of herself.

"This ti, her condition has been stabilized. But you must rember to not let her overwork herself. She needs to get enough rest and keep her spirits up. Don’t provoke her, and make sure she doesn’t get overly emotional.

"I will prescribe so supplents and food. Make sure she takes them every day. If you wish for Mrs. Lucas and the baby to be healthy, you must do what is necessary."

Under normal circumstances, it would not be difficult to follow the doctor’s instructions. But with Jake still sick, how was Wendy supposed to keep her spirits up? If she could be persuaded to take it easy, she would not have passed out due to tiredness and anxiety.

Michael did try to get Wendy to rest, but she just could not do so. Even while lying in bed, she could not fall asleep. Wendy had been happier for the past two days because Leah was doing well. That was why Jake did not dare to tell his parents that he was having nosebleeds.

His parents were finally able to relax a little. He did not want them to beco anxious again because of him. However, he could not stop the inevitable from happening.

"Okay, we will do as you say. Thank you," Michael said to the doctor, nodding his head in gratitude.

The doctor had arranged for Wendy’s ward to be next to Jake’s.

"Why don’t you let Wendy and Jake take the sa ward? I’ll take the other one," Zess said imdiately. "When Jake wakes up, he’ll want to see his mommy. And Wendy will want to see Jake the mont she wakes up."

...

Zess and Jake were in the sa ward to make it easier for the doctor to check on their condition. Now that Wendy had fainted, it would be appropriate for Zess to give up her spot in the ward.

But Michael and the rest did not imdiately respond to Zess’s suggestion. Zess knew that they probably thought it wouldn’t be nice to make her move out of the ward.

"I’ll be in the next room, it’ll still be convenient for the doctor. Besides, my condition is less severe than Jake’s. It’s more important to save Jake and Wendy." Zess forced herself to smile. "I’ll be fine."

Michael remained silent for a while, as if deep in thought. And then he said to Zess, "You aren’t in good shape either. You and Jake have both been poisoned. It’ll be easier for the doctor to observe the both of you and deal with any ergencies if you’re in the sa room. This ward is rather large. Once Wendy’s condition improves, she can sleep on the caregiver’s bed."

"Then let sleep on the caregiver’s bed instead. Wendy can have my bed," Zess said imdiately.

"I don’t think that’s a good idea," said Michael.

"Why not? I’ve been working for Wendy’s family for years. She’s like my daughter.

It’s decided then." Zess turned to the doctor and said, "Bring Wendy over to this ward."

And then Zess quickly went back to the ward, packed up the things on her bed and waited for the doctor to bring Wendy over.

"Thank you, Zess." Michael said sincerely.

"Why are you thanking ? Wendy has always been very good to ," Zess said with a smile.

As Wendy lay on the hospital bed, Michael sat with her. His eyes were looking back and forth between Wendy and Jake. He wished with all his heart for both of them to wake up as if nothing had happened.

The doctor soon returned with a list of supplents and food. Mrs. Lucas took the list. She handed it to the helper and told her to prepare everything that was required, and then deliver them to the hospital.

The seconds and minutes ticked by. Wendy finally woke up.

"Wendy, how are you feeling?" Michael said the mont he saw her eyes open. He was glad to see Wendy regaining consciousness.

Wendy’s head felt heavy and groggy. She looked at Michael and then rembered with a start, saying, "Where’s Jake? How’s he?"

As a mother, the first thing that ca to her mind was her child. Wendy turned to look at Jake lying in the bed next to hers. Without thinking, she tossed her blanket aside, wanting to take a look at Jake, but was held back by Michael.

"Wendy, calm down," said Michael. "Jake’s condition is stable. Did you know that you fainted?"

"I fainted?" Wendy suddenly recalled that she seed to have passed out earlier on.

She rembered that her head had been spinning and her body had felt limp. And then she did not recall anything else.

"Yes, and do you rember that you’re pregnant?" Michael said worriedly. "The doctor said that you cannot afford to be agitated again. And you cannot be exhausted. From today on, you must eat and sleep regularly. Otherwise, I’ll not let you see Jake."

"No, I want to be with Jake," Wendy said imdiately.

"Then you’ll have to listen to , Wendy. Don’t make all of us worry for you, all right?" Michael held Wendy’s hand tightly, his voice breaking.

If anything were to happen to Wendy again, he knew he would not be able to handle it.

...

Wendy looked at Michael’s red-rimd eyes. It made her heart ache. His handso face was now covered with stubble, his eyes were bloodshot and there were deep dark circles under his eyes. Michael seed to have beco much more haggard overnight.

Wendy’s reached out to touch Michael’s face. Her hand started to tremble slightly.

"All right," Wendy said, her voice breaking. Tears flowed from her eyes as she nodded.

Michael gently wiped away her tears and held her tightly in his arms.

"Jake will be fine," Michael said hopefully into Wendy’s ear. "I’m sure."

"Yes, he will be fine," Wendy said firmly, nodding her head.

Wendy’s appetite had not been good over the past few days. She ate little. But because she had already passed out once, when the helper brought food over, Michael tried to feed her. Wendy was not keen to eat, but she forced herself to finish the food.

By the ti Jake woke up, it was already nightti. He did not wake up with a nosebleed, but he could not stop coughing. The doctor gave Jake another checkup and found that his body temperature was higher than usual.

"Jake is having a high fever, and he wouldn’t stop coughing. We’ll first try to bring his fever down. It will be very dangerous if his temperature continues to rise," the doctor explained quickly.

Michael and Wendy were not dical experts so they could only trust the doctor. At midnight, Jake’s fever persisted. Wendy was very worried and could not sleep.

Michael was worried about both Jake and Wendy.

"Wendy, could you get so sleep?" Michael tried persuading Wendy. "Jake has the doctor watching over him, and I will be here looking after him. Don’t worry, I will take good care of Jake."

"But..."

Michael knew what Wendy was going to say so he did not let her finish. "I know you can’t fall asleep, but you have to. Even if you can’t sleep, you should at least close your eyes and rest.

"Your body can’t take any more stress. You’re pregnant. If anything happens to you, the baby would suffer too. Wendy, please. Don’t make worry about you too."

Wendy saw the worry and fear in Michael’s eyes. She could only nod her head. She knew that she should not continue to stress her body. It might endanger her and the unborn child.

Michael felt relieved when Wendy nodded. He said, "Why don’t you rest in the next room? It’s crowded here and the lights cannot be turned off. You won’t be able to rest well here."

Wendy wanted to protest. But she knew that if she stayed in the sa ward, Michael would have to take care of both her and Jake. Although she was reluctant to leave the ward, for the sake of her unborn child and Michael, Wendy had to take care of herself. So Wendy nodded in agreent.

Michael carried Wendy off the bed and headed for the ward next door.

In the next room, Michael placed Wendy on the bed gently and bent over to kiss her on the forehead. "Good night," he said in a soft, gentle voice.

Wendy tugged Michael’s sleeve, blinked her eyes, and said, "If anything happens to Jake, don’t hide it from . You must let know imdiately."

"Okay," Michael agreed. He kissed Wendy’s forehead again before leaving the room.

Before going out, he turned out the lights and closed the door behind him.

Wendy lay on the bed, but she could not fall asleep. She had agreed to move to this room only to stop the others from worrying about her.
