"Oh, I get it now," Wendy nodded, seeming to have understood what had gone down. Smiling, she said, "What you’re saying is that Mr. Lucas was even willing to put his life on the line to protect . Now that I know that, it does sound like a very touching story."
From her tone and the way she said it, Wendy appeared positively strange. The assistant was about to continue talking when Christian waved at him to shut him up.
Noticing Christian’s gesture, Wendy sneered, "Oh? So Mr. Lucas has also heard what he said. And here I was, thinking that I was the only one who heard it."
"What are you insinuating?" Christian asked bluntly.
"Well, your assistant has been talking non-stop and yet you did not even bother to shut him up," Wendy broke it down for him. "That could only an that you had wanted him to continue talking. It had been your intention to let him tell what had happened to earn my sympathy and make feel grateful. Well, I have played along with this perfectly. Are you touched by my acting?"
Christian was obviously rattled when he heard Wendy’s words. She was absolutely right. He had deliberately planned for his assistant to tell her what had happened.
But he had not expected her to see through his ruse so easily.
When she saw the slight change in Christian’s face, Wendy knew that she had been right. "Since you had planned for this to be told to , there is no way I can confirm its accuracy. For all I know, you might have made this story up to fool . Of course, it could still be true. But then again, so what if it’s true? You were the one who brought here and has kept as a prisoner, not even allowing to venture outside the main gate. You know very well that I only love Michael and yet, you still went ahead and placed my look-alike by his side in Lake City. I have a family, a husband, and kids. Despite that, you still kidnapped and robbed of everything, even hope.
Don’t say it’s all because you love . When you truly love soone, you don’t do this. What you’re doing is not for love but to fulfill your sick hallucinations. You think that you love . That is why you’re forcing to stay by your side. That is why you will risk everything to protect , to the extent of putting your life on the line.
But Christian, have you ever considered that this is not what I want? You were the one who did this to yourself. So, even if you had died yesterday, I would have rejoiced. You are a selfish, narcissistic pervert! What would you know about true love?"
"Ms. Stewart, I think you have gone too far!" The assistant jumped to Christian’s defense again, "The fact is that the boss nearly lost his life because of you. Even if you’re not at all grateful for what he has done for you, you should at least be sowhat affected. I have served the boss for many years now and this is the first ti I have seen him make sacrifices for any woman."
"Really?" Wendy sneered again. "If my mory serves right, your boss was also the one who instigated the accident that gave amnesia and temporary blindness.
If that’s how this boss of yours loves sobody then I consider it my worst misfortune ever that he set his sights on !"
Indignantly, the assistant was about to speak up when Christian cut in and rebuked him, "Get out of here!"
Despite feeling that he had been wronged when Christian yelled at him, the assistant knew that his job was done. He had said all that he had been told to say, so his mission had been completed. So, the assistant left them and walked away.
Shortly, Wendy and Christian were the only ones left in the cafeteria. Keeping her head low, Wendy focused on eating. She was still hungry and wanted to fill her stomach first. After all, she was pregnant and could not go hungry.
...
Christian originally thought that Wendy might be touched or moved by using soone else’s mouth to talk about what happened yesterday. It seed that he still underestimated Wendy’s hatred for him. Seeing Wendy imrsed in the al, Christian didn’t say anything for a while.
Soon, Wendy finished her al. She put down her silverware and said coldly, "Zen hasn’t eaten yet. I’ll go to the kitchen to get her so food." With that, Wendy got up and planned to leave as if nothing had happened.
However, as soon as she stood up, Christian said, "I haven’t finished eating yet."
Wendy stopped and faintly asked, "So what?"
"Stay with until I finish this al," Christian said.
Wendy didn’t hesitate and sat back down. She knew that it was useless to resist. If Christian really wanted her to stay with him, Wendy wouldn’t be able to leave the dining room anyway. Besides, it was not a particularly excessive request.
"Hurry up. Zen is still waiting," Wendy urged.
Christian watched Wendy sit down so obediently. His face was calm, and he didn’t speak anymore but started eating slowly. After a while, Christian spoke again, "I want to eat chicken wings."
Wendy understood what Christian was implying by saying this to her, but she obviously didn’t want to do what he was asking. "And what?"
"Get them for ," Christian said straightforwardly.
"Mr. Lucas, your hands aren’t broken, right?" Wendy asked.
"I’ll say it again, give chicken wings. Get them for ," Christian’s tone beca cold.
Wendy hesitated, but eventually took the chopsticks to the side of her plate and picked up a chicken wing. When she was about to put it in Christian’s bowl, Wendy shook her hand deliberately, and the chicken wing fell onto the table.
"Sorry, my hands shook accidentally," Wendy said softly. "Or, you can do it yourself, Mr. Lucas."
Christian glanced at Wendy. Of course, he knew she had done it on purpose. "Pick up another one," Christian said.
Wendy glanced at the chicken wing on the table, picked it up, and threw it directly into Christian’s bowl. "Don’t waste it."
Wendy did it deliberately, thinking that Christian wouldn’t eat it. Unexpectedly, Christian lowered his head and ate the chicken wing. Seeing this scene, Wendy thought to herself that she should have thrown the chicken wing on the ground just now and then picked it up for him.
After a while, Christian spoke again, "I’m going on a business trip tomorrow."
"Huh? So what?" Wendy was a little speechless. "Mr. Lucas, you don’t need to explain your itinerary to . Now that you have restricted my movent and won’t even give a phone or computer, even if you tell everything about yourself, I couldn’t tell anyone in the world."
"I will be back in about three days," Christian continued.
"So?" Wendy beca even more dumbstruck.
However, Christian seed to have not heard what Wendy said. "I am going to RiverCity," he continued. "Is there anything you want? I can bring it back for you."
Wendy couldn’t help but scoff. She didn’t know what kind of short circuit Christian had in his brain. Wendy and he were enemies, and her personal freedom was restricted by him. Christian asked her as if nothing has ever happened between them. What gift did she want? She couldn’t have what she wanted, so she wouldn’t ask Christian for it.
"If not, I will just look around and bring sothing for you." After saying this, Christian put down his bowl and chopsticks before standing up. "Go take Zen her food." Then, as if nothing happened, he left the dining room.
"Insane," Wendy couldn’t help but spit her disbelief.
...
anwhile, in the Lake City Hospital, Michael had been hospitalized for five days.
’Wendy’ still brought food to Michael as usual. However, she didn’t dare to cook by herself, because Michael had said the porridge she made last ti tasted different.
She was afraid that Michael would notice that her cooking skills were different from Wendy’s. After all, she was lucky enough to find a good excuse for it last ti, but she would not be so lucky every ti. So the als she delivered these days were all made by Zess. Anyway, her current identity was as a pregnant woman. It was normal for pregnant won to not sll oily smoke and to not want to cook.
Seeing Michael finish eating, ’Wendy’ put away the dishes and chopsticks, with a gentle smile on her face. "How do your legs feel?"
"It’s been good for a while. I think I can be released from the hospital now." Michael didn’t want to stay in the hospital at all. "Talk to the doctor later, please. Let’s go ho imdiately," he said.
"You have a gunshot wound. Although it didn’t harm your muscles or bones, you should not be in a hurry to leave the hospital anyti soon," ’Wendy’ advised Michael. "I know you are worried about the company’s affairs, but can’t Mr. York help deal with it? You have been in the hospital for these past few days and you haven’t allowed yourself to rest."
"But the injury to my leg is not in serious condition anymore. The doctor said so too.
As long as I rest for a while, I’ll be fine. Isn’t this the sa as resting at ho?"
Michael looked at her in distress, and said, "I feel sorry for you too. I don’t want to see you running back and forth so much everyday."
"But..." Just when ’Wendy’ was about to say more, Milo ca in through the door.
Wearing a white coat, he walked directly to Michael’s side and asked, "How do you feel?"
"It doesn’t hurt much anymore," Michael said to Milo. "By the way, didn’t you say yesterday that I can be discharged from the hospital today?"
Milo frowned slightly. When he was about to ask about what he was talking about, he saw Michael winking. Of course, he knew that Michael wanted to be discharged from the hospital.
Milo bent down and carefully examined the injury on Michael’s leg. "The wound has healed very well," he said. "If you want to be discharged, you can leave the hospital.
Rember to co to the hospital for a change of bandages every two days.
Actually, forget that. Every two days, I will send soone to your house to change your dressing."
"So that kind of service is available?" Michael smiled, "Is this part of your plan to charge more service fees?"
"Why would you think that? I simply think that your leg injury makes it inconvenient for you to co back and forth to the hospital," Milo said, but then he suddenly turned the conversation in another direction. "If you feel embarrassed, then you can help our hospital with a donation of a million dollars and so dical equipnt."
"Huh? You are being very direct with saying this to ," Michael said, glancing at Milo. "How much dical equipnt do I donate to your hospital almost every year?
A doctor ca to to change my dressings and wants to blackmail ."
Milo gave a light cough. "That’s because you’re the only person I know here who has the money. If I don’t ask for funding from you, I couldn’t possibly ask anyone else because other people don’t have that much money."
Michael sohow felt a bit angry but amused with what Milo said. He laughed as he spoke, "So you’re friends with just because I have a lot of money? Just so I can give your hospital subsidies at any ti, right?"
"Don’t be so stingy," Milo said with a chuckle. "Look at the service you’ve received at our hospital. All round the clock care without a single thing missed. Not only you for you, but also for Wendy who will co to us anyti after she gives birth. During the hospital birth check, we are all caring and thoughtful."
