Chapter 137: Chapter 127: A Dark and Stormy Night

Liu Chang!

“Liu Yong…” In the middle of this torrential rain night, Chu Yu missed the sun so much that she almost let slip words she shouldn’t have said, but she quickly beca alert and imdiately closed her mouth.

When Liu Chang saw Chu Yu, he also instantly sensed trouble. The sound of the rain was too loud earlier, and since he had been thrown until he was dizzy, he hadn’t heard the exchange between Xiao Bie and Chu Yu clearly. If he had known that the person sitting in the chariot was a Princess, he would have never lifted his head.

Seeing Liu Chang, Chu Yu suddenly understood everything, why Xiao Bie looked so uncomfortable before, why he went out alone in this dark rainy night.

Her gaze rested on Liu Chang’s face: So that’s how it was.

Xiao Bie was helping Liu Chang secretly escape. By pretending to leave the city, he had Liu Chang pose as his coachman in hopes of diverting attention.

...

The heavy rain was originally a perfect cover, but their luck was just poor. On the way, they actually had such an accident, and their ans of transportation was destroyed by two strikes from Yue Jiefei’s sword.

“Princess.” Xiao Bie’s handso and tense face beca sowhat awkward, not knowing what to say and also reluctant to look directly at Chu Yu. No matter how compatible they were in music, their current positions were completely opposed, at least in everyone’s eyes, Chu Yu was seen as part of Liu Ziyue’s side.

At this mont, only four words flashed through Liu Chang’s mind: Heaven wants to doom .

He had just witnessed Yue Jiefei’s swordsmanship. Even if he and Xiao Bie joined forces, they wouldn’t stand a chance against him alone. To get past this hurdle seed almost impossible.

Just as Liu Chang was in despair, Liu Chuyu lifted the chariot curtain completely and said indifferently, “What are you standing outside for? Hurry up and get on.”

Xiao Bie turned his gaze back in surprise, “Princess?” She was actually letting them on the chariot?

Chu Yu looked around and urged, “Co on, quick, don’t dawdle. My chariot is quite spacious, there’s room for both of you.”

Liu Chang and Xiao Bie exchanged glances. Though they hesitated, they feared that delaying any longer outside would only bring worse consequences, so they both boarded Chu Yu’s chariot in succession.

The chariot was spacious enough for four people. Rong Zhi and Chu Yu sat on one side, while the two who boarded later sat on the opposite side.

After Chu Yu lowered the curtain, Rong Zhi imdiately instructed Yue Jiefei, “Leave this place.” Then he opened a wicker basket beside him, took out two clean cloths, and tossed them to Xiao Bie and Liu Chang: “Dry yourselves.”

Then he pointed outside, “After drying the blood, it would be troubleso, but Brother Liu, please take over as coachman for a while.” When he said this, his eyes were on Liu Chang.

So of the fresh blood that Yue Jiefei splattered when cutting down the horse had splashed onto Liu Chang’s face and body, but the heavy rain had washed most of it away quickly. With just a few wipes, the remaining blood was dried, and upon hearing Rong Zhi’s words, he paused slightly with the cloth in hand, then quickly understood his intentions.

Right now, he was dressed as a coachman. Although it was unlikely anyone would dare search the Princess’s chariot, for the sake of thorough caution, it was still better to have Liu Chang continue playing the coachman. If they were stopped, the people might search the chariot thoroughly but were less likely to pay much attention to a coachman.

“However, before that, please allow Brother Liu to atone.” Suddenly, Rong Zhi closed in on Liu Chang. With a nimble flick of his fingers across Liu Chang’s face, Liu Chang only felt sothing warm being sared on his eyebrows, the corner of his eyes, the bridge of his nose, and his cheeks, but he didn’t see it clearly. Afterward, Rong Zhi stepped back, and Xiao Bie, looking over, was startled to see the transformation in Liu Chang’s appearance.

Rong Zhi’s adjustnts were not too extensive; he had rely brought Liu Chang’s eyebrows closer together, drawn a line to extend and refine the corners of his eyes, and dabbed a bit of color on the bridge of his nose and the sides of his cheeks. This imdiately made the person look different. The changes to the cheeks and nose were especially noticeable, with the nose now having an apparent hook, and the cheeks seeming as if two slices had been carved off.

If soone who wasn’t familiar with Liu Chang were to see him now, they probably wouldn’t recognize him at all!

Rong Zhi withdrew his hand and reclined against the carriage wall in a leisurely manner, saying indifferently, “Our venture out into the rain tonight was supposed to be a search for soone. We were ill-prepared and had to act hastily, so please forgive us for the inconvenience.”

But Xiao Bie couldn’t laugh. Once they got on the chariot, this graciously refined and seemingly frail youth took control so naturally. His words implied that he recognized Liu Chang, but there was no sign of respect, and his orders seed a matter of course, with an air as if he had always held a position of authority.

And the skill he had just displayed was indeed magical.

Who was this youth?

Liu Chang, upon being cleverly disguised by Rong Zhi, imdiately put on a conical hat. Although sowhat displeased with Rong Zhi’s disrespectful ordering, the stakes were life and death, not a ti to save face. He was a perceptive man and imdiately followed Rong Zhi’s instructions, slipping towards the front of the carriage with the hat on.

In the spot inside the carriage where he had originally been seated, he left behind a pool of dark water stains.

It wasn’t until Liu Chang had left that Chu Yu, who had simply let Rong Zhi take charge up to this point, began to feel sothing was amiss. She hadn’t revealed Liu Chang’s identity, but judging by Rong Zhi’s behavior, it seed as though he had already grasped the full situation. How did he know?

However, due to Xiao Bie’s presence, she did not voice her questions, only letting a trace of doubt show in her eyes.

Rong Zhi casually leaned against the side and offered a brief explanation to her: “Discern the situation and understand people through observation.” This simply clarified why he was able to deduce Liu Chang’s identity.

A strategist can see one leaf fall and know that autumn has arrived for the world.

Xiao Bie, after taking the cloth, first wiped the water stains off the qin case before attending to himself. He was nearly soaked through, with strands of hair slipping from beneath his hairpin, sticking tightly against his handso face. Sitting in the carriage, he seed a bit constrained, and his expression grew increasingly tense.

Chu Yu looked at him and smiled slightly, “As it happens, I’m also leaving the city, so I can give you a ride along the way.”

Xiao Bie seed as if he wanted to say sothing, but just then, the carriage ca to a stop. A heavy, nacing atmosphere, along with the waterfall-like rain, brought a chill that crept into the carriage.

Chu Yu asked calmly, “Yue Jiefei, what’s the matter?”

Outside, Yue Jiefei’s low voice ca through, “Princess, we can’t get through. Up ahead is, up ahead is…”

Chu Yu leaned forward and lifted the curtain of the carriage, peering through the dense rain. Up ahead, she saw the chilling gleam of silver, the swords, spears, and halberds bearing down on them, and the leading man, sitting astride his horse, appeared taller than the rest. Like the other soldiers, he was dressed in rain gear, but even though half of his face was obscured, that imposing presence was unmistakably his own.

Up ahead was — the Southern Song’s God of War, Shen Qingzhi.

Chu Yu smiled faintly, showing only a sliver of her face from within the carriage, and without stepping out, she spoke slowly, “General Shen, you block my way, is there sothing you need?”

Shen Qingzhi sneered, “The Princess is out on a military-curfewed night; might I ask, is there sothing you need?”

A wave of tension surged through Chu Yu’s mind, cursing her luck. She had always been on bad terms with Shen Qingzhi, who believed that she bewitched the Emperor and disapproved of her. Now, at this critical ti, she had run into him. Even revealing her title as Princess, she was unable to smoothly pass through.

Yue Jiefei drew his longsword with a cold shout, “How dare you, Shen Qingzhi! This is Princess’s carriage. Do you intend to offend Princess?” As soon as his sword was unsheathed, the soldiers behind Shen Qingzhi also raised their weapons and pointed them forward, shouting in unison, “Halt!” Their actions were impeccably coordinated, and their shouts suppressed the sound of the rain, pressing in as sharply as their blades.

In an instant, both sides were on the verge of conflict, as if about to wage war at the slightest provocation. Suddenly, Chu Yu felt her hairpin being pulled out, her hair scattering down, followed by a hand resting on her shoulder from behind while another pulled the carriage curtain completely open. A gentle voice, akin to the thawing of spring waters by her ear, even seed to soften the pouring rain: “Princess, why haven’t you returned?”

At that, Shen Qingzhi got a clear view of the inside of the carriage and couldn’t help but be taken aback. Chu Yu, turning towards the voice behind her, was just as startled.

While Chu Yu and her party were at a standstill with Shen Qingzhi, forty miles outside the eastern part of the city, at the foot of East Mountain, a solitary figure stood in the storm, wrapped in purple clothes, almost engulfed by the thick night.

The storm raged on.
