Chapter 293: Chapter 202: The Man Who Held Up the Sky
“Xiao Mo, you always tell Mom, how are you really doing in Modu?”
The voice on the other end of the phone was Mom’s caring and familiar voice.
A few days ago, Chu Mo had video-called his mom and told her that everything was fine. At the end of last month, after his “Chu Mo Short Stories Collection” was distributed nationwide, he sent two million to his family, telling his parents it was his royalty fee. He also ntioned to his family that he was doing well in Modu, having made lots of friends and even receiving appreciation from so leaders, planning to make a good developnt there.
The reason why Chu Mo said this was actually to cushion his parents for the news, planning to gradually reveal to his parents that he had indeed made a fortune.
Chu Mo held his phone, looking back at the busy scene in the hall, worried that the noise of the maids might be heard by Mom on the phone, so he walked towards the swimming pool ahead.
“Mom, haven’t I told you? I’m doing fine here. My book was published a while ago, and I earn a steady few hundred thousand in royalties each month. Also, the second book is in discussions for publication. At most by the end of the year, with the second book’s publication fee, plus the annual bonus, performance bonus, and all that jazz, it should be about five or six million. And this is just the beginning; it will only get better from here. So you and Dad really don’t have to work so hard. If you ask , you both should just retire and travel the world,” he said.
“Alright, stop using that to make your dad and happy. You know what our jobs are like; they’re quite easy, and we make about one hundred and twenty thousand a year. Plus, we’re a few years away from retirent. Quitting now would an that we’ve worked for nothing all our lives.
If you really care about your dad and , then hurry up and bring a girlfriend ho. Seeing you get married would be better than anything!”
Mom’s voice on the phone carried a hint of complaint, a perennial topic in every call. Chu Mo’s ears were practically calloused from hearing it. He didn’t argue, knowing that if he continued on this topic, she would surely start comparing him to their relatives and friends. He quickly changed the subject, slightly puzzled:
“Mom, don’t you usually call at night…?”
Before Chu Mo could finish, Mom on the phone imdiately interjected:
“Right, I almost forgot the main issue. Actually, your dad didn’t want to bother you with this, afraid it might cause trouble for you. But since Aunt Liu ca to us, I couldn’t refuse. I’ll tell you about it, and you can decide if you’re able to help. If you think you can lend a hand, then do so. Aunt Liu has had it tough, but if not, don’t force yourself. It’s important to live our own lives well. This is what happened…”
Mom went on to explain, and Chu Mo gradually understood the situation.
Aunt Liu was a neighbor from his hotown, living next to his family house. Since the two families were close, Mom and Aunt Liu had always gotten along well.
This ti, it was about Aunt Liu’s partner.
Aunt Liu’s partner was surnad Zhang, an outsider from another village. He had been working in big cities for years to afford her dical expenses, as Aunt Liu had a chronic illness requiring constant dication. Chu Mo had lived in his hotown until he was eleven, but his mories of Uncle Zhang were sparse, faintly recalling him as a tall and lean man.
Now, Uncle Zhang was detained at a work site in Modu due to so troubles, and they reached out to Chu Mo for help solely because they had no one else familiar in Modu, a desperate last resort.
“Xiao Mo, if you can help, please do. I’ve told you, when you were little, I didn’t have breast milk, but Aunt Liu had plenty, and you were also raised by her. I’ve always kept that kindness in mind…”
Chu Mo stood beside the villa’s swimming pool, looking at the nearly ten thousand square ter courtyard and the private helicopter in the yard, he took a deep breath and said earnestly:
“Mom, I’m not ungrateful. I’ll see to handling this matter. Don’t worry, I’ve studied in Modu for four years and have been here for three more after graduation, I’ve made so friends. Give Uncle Zhang’s phone number, and I’ll contact him. Mom, rest assured, I’ll take care of this.”
After shooting the breeze for a bit, Chu Mo hung up the phone with his mother and soon after, received a WeChat ssage notification. It was a ssage from his mom, containing a phone number and a location.
Upon opening the shared location on the map, Chu Mo discovered that Uncle Zhang was actually near Shanghai Financial Tower, at most a 20-minute drive from his own location.
He took a deep breath and then gestured to Shou Bo, who wasn’t far away. As the head bodyguard who had also been promoted to a level five position, earning a monthly salary of eighty thousand and nearly a million a year, Shou Bo imdiately jogged over.
Chu Mo had an imnse amount of trust in Shou Bo, one of the earliest bodyguards to join him. As the robust young man approached, Chu Mo gave his orders directly:
“There’s an issue, we need to leave imdiately. All the bodyguards in the villa should go, and also get a few people from Jiang Tao Detective Agency over here.”
The handso young man who heard the command nodded his head imdiately, turned, and left. Just monts later, a Rolls-Royce and a Bentley arrived in front of them. Including the deputy head, Fang Lihu, several tall bodyguards well over two ters in height were also seated in the cars. Chu Mo sat in the back seat of the Rolls-Royce, and after Jiang Tao closed the door for him, the two luxury cars imdiately headed toward the entrance of Emperor Xuan Villas.
Chu Mo took out his phone and forwarded the address his mother had just sent him on WeChat to Fang Lihu, who was sitting in the front passenger’s seat. He then fell silent.
With Chu Mo’s power and status in Shanghai now, there was basically nothing he couldn’t handle.
And Uncle Zhang was just a worker; with his status, Chu Mo figured it was unlikely he could have offended anyone too high-level, which is why he had agreed so readily before.
After the motorcade left Emperor Xuan Villas and rounded a corner, they began to accelerate. With Chu Mo’s orders, both vehicles increased their speed to the limit, ensuring safety. The journey, which was supposed to take twenty minutes, only took ten. When they arrived near Shanghai Financial Tower, Fang Lihu, who was sitting in the passenger seat, imdiately alerted, “Mr. Chu, we have reached the location on the map.”
Chu Mo nodded. The Rolls-Royce Phantom slowly pulled over and stopped. After stepping out of the car, Chu Mo didn’t even need to make a call to confirm; he easily located Uncle Zhang.
Right across the street from the Financial Tower, a large crowd had gathered. No need to ask; given the propensity of locals to crowd around any commotion, sothing must have happened.
Chu Mo strode forward, with the over two-ter tall Fang Lihu and several bodyguards closely following him. He didn’t need to lift a finger; the towering bodyguards opened a path through the crowd. Even though the people pushed aside were sowhat disgruntled, upon seeing the entourage following Chu Mo, everyone chose to zip their lips.
Chu Mo reached the inner circle of the crowd and first saw a bald man with sunglasses. In front of the bald man was a gaunt middle-aged man with stark red slap marks on his face.
Uncle Zhang, the man who lood large and cheerful in his childhood mories.
Now, he appeared frightened and ek, his face full of apprehension. Despite being slapped, the thin and cautious middle-aged man didn’t resist at all but instead bowed deeply, continuously apologizing.
The pillar that once sheltered him and the other kids had finally aged.
Now, it was ti for his generation to take a stand and support the older one.
Chu Mo moved forward with light steps, yet his eyes carried a hint of coldness.
