“Ha ha ha—”
The bandits laughed unrestrainedly, with the leader showing a hint of scorn in his eyes, “You don’t need to pay double, once you’re dead, your stuff will naturally beco ours, but if you serve us well before you die, chief might kindly tell you who wants to kill you!”
“Boss, why bother talking to her? Just do her in and that’s that!” Another bandit climbed onto the Kang and reached out to grab Xiang Yun.
Xiang Yun was cornered with nowhere to escape, gritting her teeth, she raised the scissors and stabbed at the bandit grabbing her.
“Pop—”
Out of nowhere, a stone flew and struck the lamp on the kang table with unerring accuracy, and the lamp went out, plunging the room into utter darkness.
“Eh? What’s happening here?”
The lead bandit, while catching Xiang Yun’s stabbing wrist, looked back in confusion, “Why has the lamp gone out? It’s no fun playing in the dark! Quick, where’s the firelighter? Ouch—”
The bandit suddenly cried out, releasing his grip and collapsing limply.
A warm, sticky liquid splashed onto Xiang Yun’s face, viscous and with a tallic scent—blood!
Whose blood was it?
While panic-stricken, another scream rang out, “Damn, who’s hacking ?”
“Ah—”
Another man cried out in agony, “I’ve been cut too, quick, there’s soone else in the room, hurry, get the damn firelighter!”
Then, a succession of screams echoed one after another, while Xiang Yun shrank into the corner, trembling and listening to the “pop pop” sounds of swords hacking flesh in the darkness, and the bandits’ vile cursing and cries, panic making her scalp go numb as she cowered and shivered.
Suddenly, a warm and strong hand reached out and pulled her into a warm embrace.
Xiang Yun instinctively wanted to scream and resist, but as she ca close to that warm embrace and slled the faint scent, her anxious and frightened heart cald down a lot, a vaguely familiar voice whispered in her ear, “Don’t be afraid, I’ll take you out.”
Like a drowning person clutching a straw, Xiang Yun embraced the man’s waist without hesitation.
The man seed quite pleased with her pragmatism and whispered, “Hold tight, let’s go!”
Without waiting for her response, there was a ‘bang’ as he burst open the window and leapt into the courtyard with her in tow.
The bandits inside the house had noticed them too, and they jumped out the windows, cursing as they went, “Boy, if you’ve got the guts, don’t run, see if I don’t split you in two!”
Seeing them coming after her, Xiang Yun, frightened, said with a crying voice, “What do we do? They’re coming!”
“It’s okay!”
The man comforted her in a low voice and, with another leap, ascended to the rooftop. Outside, a light rain was drizzling down; the man took off his robe and draped it over her, saying, “You wait here, I’ll take care of them and then co back for you.”
Xiang Yun nodded, choking up, “Be careful, there are… so many of them…”
“Rest assured!”
The man responded and, with a swift motion, his tall silhouette quickly disappeared from her sight.
Wrapped in the man’s clothes, Xiang Yun sat on the roof ridge in the miserable chill and rain of the dark night, alone without anyone to rely on, hoping that the man who saved her could defeat those bandits and co back to take her away soon.
