Chapter 650: Chapter 649: Woman and Child in the Snow

After a few days of coaxing cats and teasing dogs, Lin Nianhe was doused with a bucket of cold water by Uncle Guan.

In this dead of winter, the old man insisted on pouring cold water.

It almost froze her heart.

But Uncle Guan really did wake Lin Nianhe up—

Who decided that without her, Ten Miles Team wouldn’t function? Who required that without her, the villagers couldn’t live well?

The protagonist of the world is Uncle Kapasa, not her Lin Nianhe.

She cald down and settled her heart to live her humble life well.

Life is so magical, while jumping up and down trying to achieve sothing big always ends up in vain, letting go of obsessions actually brings matters to her doorstep.

The day after Lin Nianhe’s birthday, since the first class wasn’t hers and she woke up late, she went to school alone a step behind.

Today it was snowing heavily and the wind was strong, taking three steps forward and two steps back, standing outside for two minutes would turn you into a snowman.

The Northwest wind roared wildly, unrestrainedly displaying its prowess.

“Wah—Wah—”

In the wind and snow, a slight cry scattered in the air.

This voice was not much louder than a kitten’s owing, swept up by the wind and snow, unless one had extraordinary hearing, it would be completely inaudible.

Lin Nianhe stopped, lifted her hat, and listened carefully.

“Wah—Wah—”

The sound was even fainter, but she was sure it was not an illusion.

Lin Nianhe imdiately looked around, trying to locate the source of the voice as she sought the person making it.

It’s tough searching for soone in heavy snow, with snowdrifts to the left and right, everything blanketed in white.

The snowstorm blinded her, and she could hardly see the road ahead.

Lin Nianhe simply closed her eyes, focusing all her attention on her ears.

Eventually, she followed the sound and found a snowman.

It was a woman, her face already turning blue. Her padded jacket was intact, looking like she fell and fainted due to a head injury. In her arms, she held a bulging bundle, a child.

“Hey, hey?”

Lin Nianhe tapped her twice, but there was no response.

The child in her arms was not doing well either, only kept warm by his mother’s body temperature, still conscious.

Without much thought, Lin Nianhe unbuttoned two of her military coat’s buttons, took the child from the woman’s arms, and stuffed him into her own.

The child was cold like a piece of ice, making Lin Nianhe shiver.

She didn’t have ti to think further, quickly running into a nearby house, not even having the ti to recognize whose house it was.

“Wow, Miss Lin, what’s happening?” Widow Zhao was making Head Flower; seeing Lin Nianhe burst in, she instinctively picked up the small broom used for sweeping the kang, “What’s wrong? Is there a bad person?”

“No,” Lin Nianhe stood by the door, to avoid getting the floor dirty with snow from her, “Aunt Zhao, there’s a woman outside, I think she’s frozen stiff, and she has a child with her, I couldn’t move her, so I brought the child in first.”

“What?”

Widow Zhao was startled, hurriedly climbed down from the kang, putting on her cotton jacket while shouting, “Xiangqin! Hurry out, there’s soone outside!”

As she spoke, she told Lin Nianhe, “The kang is warm, don’t put the child on it, wait for to co back.”

Lin Nianhe knew that a frozen person shouldn’t be exposed to heat directly, she responded and moved aside.

The room was warm, and the child humd, the blackness swirling around, not showing any unease at being in a strange place.

Lin Nianhe thought the child looked sowhat familiar. Before she could think further, she heard Widow Zhao’s heart-wrenching scream from outside.

Holding the child in her arms, Lin Nianhe dared not go outside again and could only call out, “Aunt Zhao, what’s happened?”

No response ca, but soon after, Widow Zhao and Yu Xiangqin carried in the almost frozen woman.

Widow Zhao’s face had tears frozen on it, which only lted and flowed down with the heat.

Lin Nianhe subconsciously looked at the woman again.

The blizzard had frosted her features, making it difficult to see clearly before, but now Lin Nianhe could see clearly—

Zhao Cuixia!

No wonder she had fallen at Widow Zhao’s doorstep.

Zhao Cuixia was unconscious, but still breathing. Widow Zhao stripped her clothes and together with Yu Xiangqin rubbed her skin with snow until it lted and her body ward up, then they prepared hot water and poured it into a tub.

The blue in Zhao Cuixia’s face gradually receded, and her breathing steadied.

Only then did Widow Zhao rember to take the child; seeing the little one was alright, she breathed a sigh of relief and mixed so sugar water to feed her.

“Sister Xiangqin, Cuixia has a bump on her head, I’ll go get so dicine,” whispered Lin Nianhe, “I’ll also go to the team’s office to call the match factory and have my brother-in-law co back.”

“Okay, be careful,” Yu Xiangqin, who was busy, replied and added, “Don’t ntion Cuixia’s accident, or he might panic and cause a scene.”

“Got it.”

Lin Nianhe went to the team’s office, and just so happened to find Li Dahe there. After she explained the situation, Li Dahe puzzledly asked, “Why did she co back with the child in this heavy snow?”

Muttering to himself, after pondering for a mont, he picked up the phone to call the match factory, only ntioning that Zhao Zhuangshi needed to co back to help with so issue at the team without bringing up Zhao Cuixia’s problem.

“Should we call Uncle He and ask?” suggested Lin Nianhe.

“Yeah, we should,” said Li Dahe, frowning as he dialed the phone for Nine-miles Team.

The phone rang for a long while before being picked up in a busy uproar as if sothing major had happened.

“Old He, our Cuixia went back to her mother’s house early this morning, what’s going on?” Li Dahe got straight to the point.

“Cuixia is ho? That’s good!” said He Aimin, clearly relieved, showing he knew about the incident.

“What exactly happened?” Li Dahe felt sothing was amiss, his voice changing.

He still didn’t ntion Zhao Cuixia’s accident.

“Don’t ask! Old Li Family being troubleso, having so extra money and daring to go out gambling. Last night, debt collectors ca knocking on the door, almost took his daughter to be sold off! Damn it… Cuixia’s ho, right? Nothing happened to her?”

Li Dahe squinted, saying, “What could happen? The child just cried as soon as she arrived, wouldn’t say a word, I thought it was the Li family boy who’d hit her… Old He, let tell you, if that good-for-nothing from Old Li Family dares to co over, I’ll break his legs!”

“Hey, if anyone’s going to do that, it’ll be !”

The phone call ended, and Li Dahe furrowed his brow and put on his hat, turning to Lin Nianhe. “You go to class, I’ll go check on the Old Zhao Family.”

Lin Nianhe, who had overheard the call, took out a tin of ointnt from her bag: “Cuixia fell and hit her head; Uncle Team Leader, could you take this dicine to them when you go?”

“Why do you even carry this stuff with you?”

“I worry about the kids running around and getting hurt.”

Lin Nianhe’s reason was impeccable, and without thinking further, Li Dahe took the dicine jar and left.

Lin Nianhe followed him, asking, “Uncle Team Leader, do we still have places gambling here?”

“Hmph,” Li Dahe snorted, “Nonsense exists everywhere, they just never stop!”

Lin Nianhe deeply agreed with this statent; in her view, even if it was the end of the world, gamblers wouldn’t change their ways!
