Old Wu did not reply but gasped for breath heavily.
Lin Nianhe pondered for a mont and said, “I’m not very familiar with hospitals, but I’ll call my father later and ask around. For now, you should call Commander Shen and inform him of the situation, otherwise if you keep not returning, the battalion will start asking questions.”
Old Wu’s mind was too chaotic to think of any ideas. Lin Nianhe’s suggestion seed reasonable to him; he nodded in agreent but still felt too weak in the legs to stand up.
Lin Nianhe continued, “Brother-in-law, try to adjust your mood. I think since Sister Manling is still sick and we don’t have a definite diagnosis yet, it’s probably better not to let her know what’s happening. What do you think?”
Old Wu’s drifting rationality returned sowhat, and he nodded vigorously, “Right, we can’t let her know. Lingling is actually really scared of injections and dicine. Let’s not tell her for now.”
“Mhm, I definitely won’t say anything, and you be careful too, don’t let her notice,” Lin Nianhe checked the ti; she had been there for almost ten minutes now, “Brother-in-law, go make the call. I’ll go stay with Sister Manling first. Whatever the result may be, we should face it calmly.”
“Mhm… I’ll take a mont to recover; you go in first.” Old Wu’s voice was very hoarse.
Lin Nianhe pursed her lips and, without saying anything more, turned to go to the ward.
Guan Manling was still awake at the mont, just lethargic because of the fever.
Seeing Lin Nianhe co in, she forced a smile, “Nianhe, thanks for your hard work.”
“It’s nothing,” Lin Nianhe walked over, set down her things, and asked, “Sister Manling, how are you feeling?”
“Just body aches all over after the fever.” Guan Manling leaned against the headboard, barely able to open her eyes, “Like I’ve been beaten up.”
Lin Nianhe smiled lightly and replied, “That’s normal,” then asked, “Are you hungry? Do you want to eat sothing?”
“Not hungry, no appetite.” Guan Manling shook her head a little embarrassedly, “Nianhe, could you help go to the restroom?”
“Sure, I’ll support you.”
Guan Manling, weak all over, held on to Lin Nianhe with one hand and the wall with the other, moving slowly forward.
Lin Nianhe did not rush her, casually chatting with her about the scenery of the provincial city as if nothing was wrong.
Guan Manling responded with a smile, saying she had visited the provincial city with Old Wu during the New Year holidays but it was so cold that she really didn’t want to go out.
Lin Nianhe talked with her but was actually observing her all the ti.

Old Wu had called Commander Shen. Commander Shen was very worried about Guan Manling’s health. He not only gave him ti off but also emphasized several tis that he had money, urging Old Wu to give him an address to send the money over.
After talking with his old comrade for a while, Old Wu felt much calr and hope was reignited—after all, the Doctor had said that Lingling was young and shouldn’t have contracted such a severe illness.
He went out of his way to buy so light als, hoping to coax Guan Manling into eating a bit.
But when he ca back carrying the al box, he just saw Guan Manling being carried into the ergency room…
“Clang—”
The al box fell to the ground.

“Brother Cheng, where did Nianhe run off to today? Haven’t seen her around all day.”
Sie Yufei had been busy at the Cultural Troupe for the whole day, and he hadn’t seen Lin Nianhe when he got ho.
After waiting for quite a while, Lin Nianhe still hadn’t returned, but Su Yuncheng ca back alone.
Su Yuncheng frowned: “She hasn’t co back yet?”
“No!” Sie Yufei asked, “Where did she go?”

Sie Yufei stood up: “I’ll co with you.”

Su Yuncheng shut the door right away and drove off.
“Hey, hey!” Sie Yufei was one step too late and didn’t manage to get on the car.
Watching the departing car, he couldn’t help but complain: “What secret are you keeping? I’ve seen plenty of couples, but I’ve never seen anyone as exclusive as you two!”
No one heard his complaints, and catching up to Su Yuncheng was out of the question.
Su Yuncheng drove straight to the hospital, and without much effort found Lin Nianhe.
In the corridor, Lin Nianhe was sitting on a bench, hands clasped, brow furrowed deeply, with a dirty al box next to her.
Not far from her, Old Wu was lying at the entrance of the ergency room, not knowing how long he had been there.
Su Yuncheng hurried over, crouched in front of Lin Nianhe, and took her cold fingers asking: “What happened?”
Seeing him, a tired spark flashed in Lin Nianhe’s eyes.
She glanced in the direction of Old Wu and shook her head at Su Yuncheng, then stood up and pulled him to the other end of the corridor.
“Sister Manling… she might be in bad shape.”
Lin Nianhe dropped her gaze, conveying all that she had learned today to Su Yuncheng.
Su Yuncheng fell silent after hearing it all.
Lin Nianhe took a deep breath of air filled with the sll of disinfectant, her voice dry: “Sie Yufei must never, ever know about this.”
“I’ll send him away tomorrow,” Su Yuncheng said as he ruffled Lin Nianhe’s head to comfort her, “Nianhe, if she is really sick, it definitely wouldn’t be because of a single ti drowning.”
“I understand,” Lin Nianhe nodded, “It’s just that my brother-in-law…”
Lin Nianhe turned her head to look towards Old Wu.
Clearly, Old Wu had placed the entire bla of Guan Manling falling ill on himself.
“He’s a man; he can withstand it,” Su Yuncheng said, “Guan Manling is a Beijing person; applying for dical retirent and returning to Beijing for treatnt isn’t much trouble, so don’t worry too much.”
