Chapter 333: Chapter 332 Zhou Xu Arrives
Liu Neng and Yuan Hua originally only took on this work assignnt without complaint because of the subsidies.
But when they saw the spick-and-span house, the brand-new table and chairs, the stacked firewood in the yard, and the vegetables in the main room, they sincerely felt that the job wasn’t half bad.
Although the countryside wasn’t as good as the city, they could tell that these people had done everything they could to welco them.
Being around such honest people would make life much more comfortable, and their work could proceed more smoothly.
Li Dahe said, “Our team has a carpenter. If you need anything, just let us know. The wood is all from the mountains, it won’t cost you a penny… Co to my house for lunch today. If you didn’t bring any food with you, I’ll have my youngest son go shopping with you.”
Yuan Hua quickly responded, “No need, Uncle Team Leader, we brought our own provisions. If we need to buy sothing later on, it’s just a short walk to the town, not a bother at all.”
“Ah, it’s just that the village carts are busy with the fall harvest now, otherwise, you could take the team’s cart to town anyti to buy what you need…”
Li Dahe gave them a few instructions and then let them settle in, leaving first with Lin Nianhe.
Once outside the courtyard, he asked Lin Nianhe, “What’s the matter with you? Playing the mute?”
Ever since they had picked up the two n, Lin Nianhe had hardly said a word besides the introductory sentence.
Li Dahe was bewildered—this was entirely unlike Lin Nianhe’s usual deanor!
Lin Nianhe pursed her lips and asked, “Uncle Team Leader, what do you think of Comrade Liu Neng?”
Li Dahe pondered for a mont: “Seems like a very honest and decent person, what’s up?”
He couldn’t help but suspect, perhaps Lin Nianhe had heard sothing concerning about these two people while she was in the provincial city?
“No,” Lin Nianhe shook her head, her gaze complex, “then you all get along, don’t argue.”
Li Dahe: “…?”
“What’s really going on?”
“Nothing, just feel like singing a song.”
“…?”
Li Dahe felt that Lin Nianhe might be feeling exhausted and muddled recently, causing her mind to be a bit off.
Therefore, he gave Lin Nianhe a two-hour break, asking her to resu work in the afternoon.
With ti off, Lin Nianhe felt truly lonely.
Sigh… No one understands her…
“Ding-a-ling-a-ling!”
A bicycle bell interrupted Lin Nianhe’s loneliness.
She looked up and saw the person she recently both longed to see and was afraid to encounter—Zhou Xu.
Zhou Xu rode his bicycle, carrying the mailbag on his back, and stopped at the entrance of the Educated Youth Corps waving at Lin Nianhe: “Sister Lin!”
Instinctively, Lin Nianhe scanned her surroundings, not seeing Sie Yufei, and involuntarily sighed in relief.
She hurried over, eagerly asking, “Eldest Brother Zhou, is there a letter from Sie Yufei?”
“Ah?” Zhou Xu was startled and shook his head, “No, there’s only one parcel for your Nine-miles Team, for Wen Qingqing.”
Lin Nianhe instantly forgot about Sie Yufei’s trivial matters and her eyes shone like little bulbs, “Is it from Jin City?”
“Right.” Zhou Xu nodded, feeling sowhat embarrassed, “Sister Lin, are you working right now? Can you take to her?”
“Of course.” Lin Nianhe quickly wheeled out her bicycle, “She’s over by the grain drying yard, I’ll take you there.”
With that, she pedaled fiercely and darted off.
“Hey?”
Zhou Xu didn’t understand why Lin Nianhe was in such a rush; he actually wanted to say that they could just casually stroll there.
But seeing how Lin Nianhe had already ridden far away, Zhou Xu hurriedly chased after her.
He asked, “Sister Lin, do you know what this is?”
The corners of Lin Nianhe’s mouth uncontrollably lifted up, and her eyes curved into crescents: “Mhm, I know.”
Zhou Xu didn’t think much about it, assuming that this was sothing Lin Nianhe had asked soone to purchase.
They were still a dozen ters away from the grain drying yard when Lin Nianhe began to call out, “Sister Qingqing! Wen Qingqing! Your package has arrived! Co and get it!”
Amidst the golden-yellow corn, Wen Qingqing’s head popped up.
Seeing the excitent on Lin Nianhe’s face, Wen Qingqing instantly thought of what was in the package and imdiately dropped the corn cob she was holding, jogging over.
When she reached Lin Nianhe, Zhou Xu had just taken out the package, and Wen Qingqing took it without hesitation, tearing open the plastic cloth… wax paper… plastic cloth… wax paper…
After unwrapping six layers, two palm-sized boxes finally appeared.
Wen Qingqing looked at the two small gadgets, her own mouth curving upwards: “Nianhe, hurry, take these over to them.”
Lin Nianhe carefully took the two hearing aids from Wen Qingqing, her smile so wide she couldn’t close her mouth: “They’ve finally arrived, and just in ti! If it wasn’t today, I would have had to wait several more days before I could deliver them!”
Curiosity got the better of Zhou Xu, and he asked, “What exactly is it? Sister Lin, what did you buy?”
“Got it for soone else.” Lin Nianhe showed him the small boxes, “Hearing aids.”
Zhou Xu was well-inford about the affairs of the neighboring villages and imdiately thought of the recent events in Nine-miles Team.
He was sowhat surprised, “You bought these for the sister-in-law of the Shen Family? And why two?”
“And there’s Xiao Yumin as well.” Lin Nianhe casually explained, then asked Wen Qingqing, “Sister Qingqing, do you want to co with ? We owe you a lot for this.”
Without Wen Qingqing’s connections, getting hold of these two hearing aids would have been quite a hassle.
Lin Nianhe pondered that they couldn’t let Wen Qingqing’s efforts go unacknowledged; at the very least, they had to let them know who was helping them.
Wen Qingqing nodded with a smile, “Sure, I’ve seen my uncle deal with these before. I’ll go help them wear it.”
She figured Lin Nianhe probably didn’t know how to fit hearing aids, so her presence would be helpful.
Lin Nianhe imdiately pulled her towards the bicycle, “Then let’s go, we’ll ask Uncle Team Leader for so ti off!”
When Wen Qingqing saw the bicycle, her heart instantly leaped.
She stepped back desperately while patting Lin Nianhe’s arm, “Nianhe! Nianhe, let’s talk things through! Wait a minute!”
Lin Nianhe, pulled off balance, stopped and looked puzzled, “What’s wrong?”
Wen Qingqing stared at Lin Nianhe’s hand on the bicycle handle with a look of terror, weakly saying, “I think… I think I should do good deeds anonymously. Maybe it’s better if you go by yourself…”
Lin Nianhe’s gaze slowly followed Wen Qingqing’s to her own hand.
Suddenly recalling a piece of an unpleasant past.
Lin Nianhe awkwardly tugged at the corner of her mouth, gently pushed the bicycle towards Wen Qingqing, and earnestly suggested, “Then, how about you lead ?”
Wen Qingqing sized up Lin Nianhe’s petite figure, nodded, “That works too, but you have to hold on to tight, I’m not good at cycling with soone else either.”
Lin Nianhe didn’t think twice, agreeing imdiately and hopped onto the back of the bike.
She wasn’t too worried.
Could it be worse than her being unreliable?
Indeed… it could.
The villagers laboring diligently in the grain drying yard listened as the chaotic clamor of squeaking and yelling gradually drifted further away, concern filling their gaze.
“These two girls… will they be able to make it back?”
