When Gu ZhaoChuan opened the door, he was surprised to see who was standing outside.

"Second Uncle? It’s so late—what brings you here?"

"May I co in?" Gu WeiYi's face was unreadable, making it impossible to guess what he was thinking.

He stepped into Gu ZhaoChuan’s room. The furnishings were sparse, but everything was arranged for easy access at a glance. It wasn’t hard to tell that the room’s owner valued practicality.

Given Gu ZhaoChuan’s personality over the years, that made perfect sense.

On the desk sat a frad photo: Gu WeiJun, Mo QingXia, and Gu ZhaoChuan. In the photo, they looked happy—just a normal family, unaffected by the outside world.

Back then, his wife was still alive. The Gu family hadn’t yet fallen into disarray. Everything had seed so peaceful.

Who could have imagined that a few years later, the entire capital would be turned upside down?

Gu WeiYi sat at the edge of Gu ZhaoChuan’s bed, holding the photo fra in his hands. Then he asked, “ZhaoChuan, you’re sixteen now? Almost seventeen?”

“That’s right, Second Uncle. It’s hard to believe how many years have passed. So much has changed… HuMing’s return brought new life to the household.” Gu ZhaoChuan sighed. But the aning behind his words wasn’t necessarily what others might hear.

“No one expected HuMing to return to the Gu family, did they? Who would’ve thought he’d re-establish ties just by showing up with a jade pendant? And more importantly—he’s a sharp one. Far too calculated. Don’t you think sothing feels… off?”

Gu WeiYi slowly raised his head, his calm gaze eting Gu ZhaoChuan’s.

And in that instant, Gu ZhaoChuan’s heart skipped a beat.

Facing that look, he felt as though the secrets he kept were suddenly laid bare.

A chill shot through him, his blood surging in reverse to the top of his skull.

“Second Uncle… I don’t quite understand what you an.”

“ZhaoChuan,” Gu WeiYi said, “now that HuMing isn’t here, there are so things you no longer need to hold back on, aren’t there?” He reached into his pocket and placed a folded piece of paper in front of Gu ZhaoChuan.

With stiff fingers, Gu ZhaoChuan took the paper. The mont he saw what was written on it, his knees nearly gave out.

He had to catch himself on the desk, or he would’ve collapsed right in front of Gu WeiYi.

“Second Uncle… you think I was the one behind the attempt on HuMing’s life?”

“It’s not that I think—it’s that I know. If HuMing hadn’t told , I wouldn’t have even considered it. That one-eyed man—he went through your hands, didn’t he? And now, all these years later, he’s beco your weapon. Incredible. The Gu ZhaoChuan who always seed so reliable… turns out to be this kind of person behind closed doors.”

Gu ZhaoChuan swallowed hard. His face stayed composed, but inside, waves of panic crashed one after another.

Others might not know his uncle well, but he did.

Gu WeiYi was not the type to speak without proof.

So if he’d co here now and said all this, it could only an one thing—he already had a grasp on sothing critical.

But what confused Gu ZhaoChuan was—why not expose everything publicly?

Why confront him privately like this? Could there still be so other reason?

He steadied his breathing, letting the smile fade from his face.

He looked directly at the man in front of him and said, “Since you already know, Second Uncle… why haven’t you told the others? Wouldn’t that solve everything? But instead, you’ve co to talk to like this—are you saying there’s still room to negotiate?”

“You really are smart, ZhaoChuan. All these years living in the Gu family didn’t turn you into a pampered waste. On the contrary, you used the family’s resources to sharpen yourself. Honestly, I admire that. Even if… you’re not my brother’s real son.”

With that one sentence, Gu ZhaoChuan realized his uncle intended to lay everything out.

And he was shocked to learn that Gu WeiYi even knew he wasn’t a true mber of the Gu family. Just how much had he uncovered?

Still, compared to earlier, Gu ZhaoChuan felt calr now.

He understood that the conversation ahead would decide his fate. One wrong answer, and he might not walk away tonight.

“Second Uncle, just say it. What do you want from tonight?”

“ZhaoChuan, let ask you this—do you still want to stay in the Gu family?”

“You must be joking. If I didn’t want to stay here… where else could I go? The Gu family is my only shelter. I won’t let anyone destroy it.”

Gu WeiYi raised his brows slightly. Sothing in his heart stirred with surprise.

So that was it—Gu ZhaoChuan wasn’t acting out of revenge. He just wanted to cling tightly to what he considered his.

But if that was the case, then why target the Gu family?

Could it really be Shi Zhong who wanted HuMing dead?

He wasn’t so sure anymore.

Gu WeiYi stayed cautious. This Gu ZhaoChuan before him… was no longer the nephew he once knew.

“You’re doing all this just to go against HuMing? He’s rely Second Grandpa's grandson—he shouldn’t have had any major impact on you. Or is there sothing else about him that we don’t know?”

As soon as he heard that, Gu ZhaoChuan understood—his uncle didn’t know the truth about HuMing’s identity.

And suddenly, many things made sense.

Why had his uncle shown up like this in the dead of night?

Why didn’t he confront him publicly?

He’d been searching hard, trying to uncover the truth. But in the end, Gu ZhaoChuan hadn’t needed to be found—he’d been the one approached.

And most astonishing of all… was Gu WeiYi’s true identity.

“Second Uncle, just now I couldn’t understand your actions,” Gu ZhaoChuan said, staring at him with a serious expression. “But now I do. You and I… we’re both Shi Zhong’s people, aren’t we?”

At last, the words ca out of Gu ZhaoChuan’s mouth. Even though Gu WeiYi had long suspected, hearing him admit it hit differently.

So it was true. Gu ZhaoChuan had lived among the Gu family for decades under false pretenses. And during those years, countless tragedies had likely been his doing.

Gu WeiYi fell silent.

It was hard to accept that soone he’d lived alongside for so long… had been a traitor all along.

Maybe this was what his older brother had felt all those years ago.

He slowly looked up and t Gu ZhaoChuan’s eyes.

“You’re right,” he said quietly. “Just like Shi Zhong said. The insider… is .”

And so, the truth was finally laid bare.

Both Gu ZhaoChuan and Gu WeiYi understood at last what had truly transpired all these years within the Gu family.

The only question left was—who else knew?
