In front of , floating above the surface of the lake and stretching up to the moon, lay the massive figure of the hero, outlined in a divine blue color.
The figure’s facial features and hair shape were identical to those of the hero I had fought and killed in the now-abandoned cathedral.
That could only an one thing.
For them to have the previous hero’s exact characteristics when I fought him, they must have discovered his body.
The cathedral had most likely been sealed off at this point then as well.

At that mont, as a round of applause echoed from the garden below, I let out a deep sigh and looked downward.
The public still didn’t know about the previous hero’s death and most likely believed he was still on his journey to defeat the demon king.
However, it was only a matter of ti before they found out now that the governnt had discovered the previous hero’s dead body in my cathedral.
When that eventually happens, the empire will erupt into absolute chaos, as there will now be a demon king without a hero.
Without a hero to protect the human realm from the demon king’s "unmatched power," humans would believe that a demon invasion would be inevitable.
Thus, to calm the citizens down, the governnt was probably already searching for the identity of the new hero.
Shifting my gaze upward, I glanced at Evangel out of the corner of my eyes, curious to see what expression she would be wearing.
However, surprising , she did not seem depressed or sullen...but rather angry.
Her fists were clenched as she stared at her brother’s figure ahead, and her sharp gaze didn’t falter a bit.
Revenge.
She wanted it.
Then, at that mont, sothing on Evangel’s face caught my eye.
Below her right eyelids, hiding under a stand of her snow-white air, a small and circular-shaped liquid dot appeared.
The single water dot slid down her face and fell into the grass below, disappearing forever.
As long as she doesn’t find out.
As long as she doesn’t find out.
As long as she doesn’t find out.
As my mind began to spin and flood with paranoid thoughts, I jumped off the trees, landing briskly on the patch of grass below.
Simultaneously, the light-blue trail outlining the previous hero’s figure above the lake began to disperse, leaving the night-black sky behind.
As the sky returned to its normal black color, signifying the end of the fireworks, the crowds of people sitting in the field of grass below began to walk back through the marketplace.
Seeing the streets flooded, I leaned against the trunk of the tree, allowing my body to slide down until I was sitting on the grass.
Could being friends with the hero ever work out for ?
I could see myself becoming decent but not close friends with people like Liana, who aren’t ntioned in the book.
Snapping back to reality, a sudden voice sounded from directly above on the tree.
"Shouldn’t we go?"
Not looking up at Evangel, I simply stared ahead with my eyes closed before replying.
"Yeah, we should et up with Liana.; I’ll catch up. You can go first."
I, of course, didn’t have any funds for a room at the adventurer’s guild, so I was planning on resting here for the night.
Although it was relatively cold since the lake was nearby, the quietness and tranquility of the area made up for it.
A couple of monts later, I felt the grass near vibrate as Evangel presumably landed and began walking away.
Angling myself so that my invisible horns didn’t stab into the trunk and leave marks, I rested against the tree with my eyes closed, enjoying the occasional breeze that sent my amber-brown hair flying back.
However, a sudden sound sounded from my right, disrupting my mont of relaxation and catching off guard.
I jerked backward against the tree, and my eyelids imdiately fluttered open, revealing the figure of Evangel in front of on the grass, blocking my view of the lake.
Minutes ago, the highlighted figure of the previous hero and her brother had been in the sa position.
Looking at with her eyebrows raised, Evangel shook her head and emotionlessly said.
"You didn’t catch up."
Did Liana send her back to get ?
Exhausted, both ntally and physically, I stared up at the night-black sky and quietly replied.
"Just go; I’ll be right behind you in a couple of mo-"
Interrupting mid-sentence, Evangel, with so actual emotion in her voice, stated.
"No, you won’t."
Surprised by the appearance of annoyance in her tone, I thought for a mont and responded.
"I guess I won’t."
She had helped and even wasted most of her mana so that I could watch the festival, so I had to repay the favor.
Ending whatever relationship we currently had before it could grow was my repaynt.
It would save her the pain and confusion that she would feel upon discovering my true identity as a demon and, more importantly, her brother’s killer.
As I closed my eyes once again, feeling the breeze rush against my face, I could not deny that a small part of wanted to go.
To go and follow Liana and Evangel back to the adventurer’s guild.
They had been the first people I had t and interacted with in this world, so it felt wrong to leave them.
Yet, I knew it was better for all of us if we separated.
Evangel’s face had told everything I needed to know.
Opening my eyes for an unknown reason, I glanced upward, and to no one’s surprise, Evangel and Liana were nowhere to be seen.
Rustling under the breeze, the grass flew backward and toward , with the branches of the tree above following its example.
Just like that, I had already pushed away my first acquaintances in this new world.
