On the outskirts of the east market, they sell food, in the middle, there are so sundries, and at the back, various animals are sold.
It is said that soone once even had a bear cub only two or three months old!
She doesn’t expect to buy a bear, but if she gets lucky and buys so other small animals, that would be quite nice.
Currently in her space, there’s bamboo rats, wild rabbits, pheasants, chickens, ducks, geese, snakes, eels, and soft-shelled turtles.
Except for the soft-shelled turtles, these things are breeding very well in her space, and Ling’er almost has to handle a batch of ga every month to allow the rest to continue breeding.
But Xiaomi is not here to sell anything today. There’s quite a lot of stuff in her space, but she doesn’t dare to take it out and sell it casually, mainly because she’s still small, her combat skills aren’t enough, and she’s afraid of being swindled.
As soon as she entered the backstreet of the east market, a pungent sll hit her nose directly; it’s the sll of feces mixed with urine, especially unpleasant in the hot weather.
More unpleasant than the sll behind her family’s pigsty, at least her family’s pigsty is cleaned and washed every day, but apparently not here.
Xiaomi glanced around briefly; most of what she saw were chickens, ducks, and geese. There were also many empty stalls, either because things had been sold, or because people couldn’t wait any longer and left.
The vendor noticed a custor approaching, was initially delighted, but upon discovering it was just a kid, his hope deflated and he returned to his spot in disappointnt.
Xiaomi didn’t mind; after all, who would think a kid in old clothes would co here to buy things? It’s probably more likely they thought she was the child of so stall owner here.
Xiaomi went along the side of the street, being careful not to step on any droppings on the ground.
It was almost all poultry, which made Xiaomi a bit disappointed.
But then she thought it through; if there really were any ga, they’d directly take it to the restaurant, which is easier than waiting for custors here.
Feeling deflated all of a sudden, how did she forget that while there are animals sold here, there’s definitely no ga; restaurants and wealthy households would be much easier places to sell!
However, since she was already here, Xiaomi didn’t intend to go back imdiately. Anyway, her father couldn’t finish the work for a while, so she might as well take a stroll around here.
Walking to the back, she suddenly heard an unusual noise, a whimpering sound, as if sothing was injured.
An old man was lying on a bamboo chair snoring loudly, and the whimpering sound was coming from behind his chair.
Xiaomi sidled closer, only able to see a bamboo cage but not the contents, so she poked the sleeping old man.
"Grandpa, wake up, I want to buy sothing."
The old man opened his eyes groggily, "Hmm? What’s the matter?"
Xiaomi pointed to the bamboo cage behind him, "Grandpa, what’s in there?"
"Oh, that," the old man smacked his lips, fanned himself with a palm-leaf fan, and grinned, showing a mouthful of yellow teeth, "There’s a little fox in there, kid, have you heard the story of the fox girl and the scholar?"
Not expecting the old man to say such a thing, Xiaomi was taken aback and imdiately rolled her eyes.
"Grandpa, you wouldn’t be telling there’s an injured little fox in there, that if I buy it, it will turn into a beautiful lady and find to repay , and help pass the imperial exam, would you?"
How ridiculous, using such an old tale to trick a child.
The old man laughed indifferently, unashad when his plan was exposed, "Of course, are you interested in buying it? Buying this little fox is like buying a little lady, you know."
Xiaomi almost spat out her water; he could actually say that?
"Old man, don’t think you can fool because I’m young. I go to school; the ancient saying advises not to speak of ghosts and gods, be careful I’ll report you to the county office for spouting nonsense, deceiving kids!"
Ancients believed in spirits, but pointing at a fox and claiming it would grow up into a human, what else could that be but a scam? Surely they’ll take care of it.
Sure enough, the old man lost his temper imdiately, muttering, "You brat, no fun at all."
He dragged out the bamboo cage behind him as he spoke, and with the movent, the whimpering sound inside grew louder.
Then the old man reclined into the chair again, "Twenty taels, take it if you want it."
And then he closed his eyes and pretended to sleep without even glancing at Xiaomi.
Xiaomi didn’t pay him any mind, she just opened the bamboo cage and was slightly startled.
It was actually a white fox, and very small, looking at most as big as a month-old puppy.
However, the white fox’s front leg was injured, and there was a lot of blood and dirt on its body, the whole fox looked on the verge of dying.
