I’m not sure how others feel after eating it, but in the Jiang family, this snake soup wasn’t particularly outstanding.
Mainly because, apart from pork, nearly everything else he managed to replace with items from his space.
However, the kindness of the Liu family was still appreciated. After all, when they got sothing good, they rembered us and would send a portion our way.
It wasn’t until bedti that Xiaomi suddenly rembered sothing!
"Oh no! I almost forgot!"
Xiaomi was startled, sat up abruptly, and turned to talk to her second sister, only to find nobody there. She rembered she was now sleeping separately from her second sister.
She rembered Uncle Liu was the County Magistrate, and Sister Liu was the only daughter of the County Magistrate’s household!
She was so exhausted after coming ho that she actually forgot about that.
She pondered for a mont and lay back down again.
Forget it, since Uncle Liu and the others decided to keep it a secret, they must have their reasons.
Besides, ordinary folks generally hold officials in awe. Back in the village, even the constables collecting grain taxes intimidated people.
If they knew Uncle Liu was the County Magistrate, her parents might beco very tense and uncomfortable whenever they saw him in the future.
Yawning, she napped in the afternoon but didn’t sleep enough, and now felt sleepy again.
Maybe it was the snake soup, but lying in bed, feeling entirely calm, she sensed a warmth in her abdon, as if energy was continuously gathering there.
Pondering over this strange phenonon, she dozed off and dreamt of heroic deeds all night. By the ti she woke up, her older brother and second sister had already left.
Xiaomi had gotten used to it. She usually woke up around eight in the morning, but school started at seven thirty.
So they ate even earlier, but if Xiaomi got up too early, it wasn’t a problem, so she was allowed to sleep in.
At eight in the morning, by the ti of Chen Shi, others had to get up more than half an hour earlier to complete a series of tasks like washing, eating, and rushing.
She lazily got dressed and got out of bed, squinting her way to the kitchen, scooping water, and only after washing her face did she feel truly awake.
"You, walking with your eyes closed, aren’t you afraid of tripping?" Her second mother’s helpless voice ca from behind, and she headed to the stove right after.
"Mom? You’re still ho?" Usually, by this ti, her mom would have gone to the field.
"Yeah, I just herded the ducks out and ca back to see you coming out with your eyes closed."
Her second mother was curious and didn’t call her, just followed behind to see what she was doing.
Xiaomi chuckled twice, "I wasn’t, I was squinting, not fully closed."
She then sniffed, "Slls good, what’s for breakfast today?"
"Dumplings. Didn’t you say last ti that you wanted to try pan-fried dumplings? Tried making them this morning, turned out pretty good. Aunt Yang also cooked so soy milk."
Xiaomi exclaid, "That’s amazing, you guys got up so early!"
Getting up in the morning to make dumplings, grind beans, and cook soy milk, that’s impressive.
"Been busy the past few days, couldn’t cook properly. Now that the work’s done, there’s ti. You wait for a bit, I’ll fry the dumplings for you."
Saying that, her second mother already lit the fire. Xiaomi didn’t just sit and wait to eat but went to help with the fire.
Her parents used to cook egg congee for breakfast when working early, then slice so pickles for her. She would eat it when she woke up, as the congee was kept covered in the pot and didn’t need reheating, simple and convenient.
With the fieldwork done, her second mother was relieved and naturally had the mood and ti to think more about als.
The dumplings were egg and chive dumplings. Chives grow quickly, so the ones they replanted had been harvested twice in just over a month.
lt a little lard, place the dumplings, fry them until golden brown, then sprinkle a little water, cover with a lid and let them steam for a few minutes. When you open the lid, an intense aroma wafts up.
Xiaomi couldn’t help but swallow loudly, to which her second mother responded.
"Co and eat dumplings first, I’ll heat the soy milk for you. Do you want to add sugar?"
Since the last drought, the family has loved storing different beans, and when sprouts can’t be grown, roasting and grinding them into powder keeps hunger at bay better than rice.
But now, it’s mainly because Xiaomi once ntioned in passing that drinking soy milk is good for the body. So, whenever there’s ti, the family makes soy milk.
If having noodles or buns in the morning, a bowl of soy milk really cuts through the greasiness and feels very soothing.
