Hong i smiled smugly, deliberately stomping her foot several tis and splashing muddy water around. The girls beside her erupted into joyful laughter. Because of their status as outsiders, their parents always urged them to keep a low profile in the village. Now, seeing the local tyrant of Yuequan Village blush with anger due to Hong i, they all felt a surge of pleasure.
"This ditch isn’t owned by the Zhong Family, is it? It’s state property, belonging to the broad working masses. How I choose to look for snails is none of your business!" Influenced by her father Yuzhu, Hong i retorted with ideological rhetoric.
"Well, neither does this ditch belong to the Gao Family. Your reckless actions hinder our snail hunting, so of course I will intervene," Wanhua counter-argued.
"You? Wanhua, I haven’t even started on you yet. As the daughter of the village chief, you’ve been fraternizing with the wealthy peasants. You really have regressed in your thinking, showing no aspiration. Have you lost all sense of being from the poor peasantry?" Hong i argued confidently and aggressively.
Xu Wanhu was at a loss for words. Not naturally articulate and now faced with Hong i’s denunciation, she felt flustered. Ani thought to help out, but she knew speaking up might make things worse. Sisi, hearing the commotion, hurried over.
"We’re obviously educating the wealthy peasants when we’re with them, to let them understand the honor and greatness of labor. Ani, do you now understand how honorable labor is?" Sisi asked Ani seriously.
"Now I do. Thanks to your group’s instruction, we truly realize how glorious and great labor is," Ani suppressed her laughter while responding, supported by Juying nodding along.
Knowing well that Sisi and Ani were just putting on an act, Hong i couldn’t formulate a rebuttal, agitatedly stirring the water under her feet. Sisi accused her, "Hong i, you are sabotaging our work. Hmph, you are the one with backward thinking."
"I am not! I help Mama with lots of chores every day. Sisi, you’re the one who’s backward and unwilling to work. Look at your hands and your feet; do they even look like those of soone from the countryside? You are the real backward elent," Hong i retorted furiously.
Tian Xinhua had already noticed the commotion, and seeing Sisi having the upper hand and with Wanhua present, he wasn’t too worried but kept an eye on the situation, ready to intervene if needed. He Chengsi was about to step in to help, but was stopped by Tang Qiubai.
"This is a girl’s quarrel, and it’s inappropriate for us n to get involved."
Qiubai, though sowhat chauvinistic, his remark resonated with the few boys present. By then, the argunt between Sisi’s group had escalated, shifting topics far from the original serious political issues.
"Hmph, what I have is natural beauty, I won’t tan no matter how much I am in the sun, unlike so people who cannot beco fair no matter how much they try to cover up."
Sisi, head held high, sarcastically targeted Hong i. Ani and the others barely held back their giggles, knowing Hong i’s complexion was famously dark in Yuequan Village, much like her mother—so dark that it’s hard to recognize her at night without a light.
Being dark-skinned was Hong i’s vulnerability. She gritted her teeth in frustration, and upon seeing Sisi’s fair and rosy complexion, felt even more suffocated. Suddenly, she blurted out, "You unidentifiable bastard, what’s the use of being pretty? Your own parents dumped you."
Hong i had accidentally learned of Sisi’s adopted status from her parents’ conversation, although Yuzhu had warned her never to speak of it. Provoked by Sisi’s taunts, she couldn’t hold back.
Tian Xinhua’s expression changed, and he quickly rushed over. Anping, aware of the situation, followed closely, his expression equally troubled. Despite Ankang and a few others not fully grasping the context, they too rushed over.
Although Sisi had long known she wasn’t a blood mber of the Tian Family, being insulted like this by Hong i truly infuriated her. She charged at Hong i, "My dad and Mama love very much. You’re the weird one, dressed up like a green frog, so ugly not even your grandma would recognize you."
Hong i imdiately regretted her words, but being agitated by Sisi, her anger surged, "You’re just a bastard! You’re definitely not a true mber of the Tian Family."
Due to the distance, Tian Xinhua couldn’t stop Hong i in ti. Enraged, Sisi threw herself at Hong i, grabbing her hat and hitting her hard. Hong i, caught by the necktie, struggled to breathe. Though Hong i was almost twice Sisi’s weight, she couldn’t fend off the sudden assault.
Sisi was truly furious. Although she had been planning to clear up her adopted status with the Tian Family soti, she had not anticipated this manner of disclosure! Driven to her limits by Hong i, every hit from Sisi ca with fiery rage, not minding her own pain.
Hong i’s companions wanted to intervene, but were held back by Ani and others. Seeing Sisi gaining the upper hand, they rely watched, shocked beyond asure by Hong i’s earlier revelation. They hadn’t known about Sisi’s adopted status, and although Sisi didn’t quite resemble Man Yin or Zhu Aiqing, they never suspected she wasn’t their biological daughter.
Tian Xinhua just coldly observed, not stepping in. It wasn’t appropriate for him to intervene in a girls’ fight, even though he deeply wanted to teach Hong i a lesson.(To be continued.
