Chapter 302: Chapter 259 Ginger without Pig’s Trotters_3
Having an interest in this family was naturally because Hongji’s father was still valued by his widowed mother, and importantly, both the husband and his uncle could make money, and the houses they built were decent enough.
The most crucial point was that her sister-in-law’s family could make money and even led the husband’s family in making money. Getting along with her sister-in-law was also for the benefit of her own family.
She ca from the neighboring village, her family wasn’t wealthy, and she had quite a few siblings. Coming here also brought benefits to her family mbers.
Having many siblings ant difficulties at ho, so they had already started looking for jobs at their sister-in-law’s family.
Even though so were long-term workers in farming and others did part-ti jobs, it was better than watching over just one tael of land and having so many at ho without enough food.
The two sisters-in-law entered the kitchen to collaborate in cooking. Their lives had improved a bit, and accordingly, the mother-in-law was no longer as stingy as before. They could even have at for lunch, let alone dinner, which the two sons would co ho for.
Upon seeing Ye Shuying return ho, the mother-in-law did not greet her when they entered the kitchen to cook, nor did she care, rely pursing her lips and choosing to leave a ssage for when her sons returned ho for dinner.
The sisters-in-law finished preparing als before their husbands returned, had just washed their hands, and saw their husbands returning. They quickly prepared hot water for their husbands to wash their hands and set the dinner table.
During the al, Ms. Ding glanced at Ye Shuying, who was feeding her son, and began to voice her opinions.
“Elder daughter-in-law, an envoy from your family ca this afternoon saying your younger sister had a baby girl.”
Ye Shuying paused for a mont, looking up at her mother-in-law, and said, “Mother-in-law, what did my sister’s family say?”
“Elder daughter-in-law, typically when sending a word about such good news, one would give gifts like pig’s feet with ginger vinegar and red eggs, I don’t know if it’s your younger sister being stingy or your own family holding back. They just said for you to visit tomorrow, tsk tsk, amongst sisters, why has your younger sister birthed a daughter for her firstborn?”
Ye Shuying, having her own habits and practices from her maternal family, would never speak ill of her maternal family in front of her in-laws. Disparaging her family would be akin to deaning herself, especially now that there was a new mber in the family.
Though she did not respond to her mother-in-law’s words, Ye Shuying was quite proud, otherwise, she would not take such advantage of her own family.
Ye Shuying nodded and said, “I’ll visit my maternal ho after dinner.”
Those who knew the dynamics of her family understood that this visit ant her maternal family would likely have to provide chicken and eggs.
The widowed mother was very happy for her daughter-in-law to do this; although they had chickens and eggs at ho, those were saved by her to sell for money, sparingly used just for her grandchildren.
The adults didn’t have such a privilege, and other common expenses were still there!
She would rather have her sons pay for at.
The younger sister-in-law still didn’t understand the situation well and discreetly touched her husband’s hand.
Her husband gave her a look indicating that it was better not to ddle too much in the elder sister’s affairs.
The brothers cared for each other and hoped their wives would get along well too, avoiding putting them in difficult positions or ddling in every matter.
After Ye Shuying had eaten, she didn’t wash the dishes but changed into nicer clothes and hurried to her maternal ho. Her sister-in-law pursed her lips, looked at the bowls on the table, and could only obediently clean up.
Upon reaching her maternal ho, Ye Shuying did not visit her siblings imdiately, but looked for her mother instead.
On that cold night, she had dressed warmly, and both her parents were in the room.
They heard the knock at the courtyard gate, their eldest daughter’s voice, and even the knocking on their room door.
Hongji’s father went to open the door, and upon seeing his eldest daughter, a burst of cold wind followed her in.
With such a sudden influx of cold air, Mrs. Lai, covered in blankets with a heater in the room, involuntarily shrank her neck and looked at the father and daughter:
“Shuying, why did you co so late? It’s so cold, hurry and close the door.”
Upon entering her parents’ room, Ye Shuying was greeted by a blast of warm air. She closed the door, marveling at how comfortable life was now that her family had money.
Her own family could not afford a heater in the room. Thankfully, she slept together with her husband and son during winter, and the bed was quite warm.
She found a stool and sat down beside her parents’ bed.
“Dad, mom, my mother-in-law said you sent word that my younger sister had a baby girl?”
“Yes, your younger sister isn’t as lucky as you. I hope her next child is a son!”
Mrs. Lai sighed, feeling quite sorry.
“Mom, didn’t you say you had a good eye for these things? You said my younger sister was having a son.”
With Ye Shuying’s words, Hongji’s father, who was ready to sleep, felt a wave of irritation and could not help but pick up his bamboo pipe to smoke.
Mrs. Lai, interrogated by her daughter, had no imdiate response for a long ti.
The next morning at the breakfast table, Mrs. Lai said to Mrs. Li who was having breakfast:
“Yesterday your elder sister ca over. Go visit your younger sister with her in the morning. Prepare the chicken and eggs for your elder sister too, and let her nephew stay at ho with his sister.”
Mrs. Li paused with her utensils in hand; a very stingy person would definitely refuse to prepare such items for her sister-in-law’s sister.
Gift-giving is all about the thought – wouldn’t that negate the closeness between real sisters?
