"So how did you escape? You said there were guards everywhere," Caroline asked, fixated on the scarf around my neck.
"I..."
Wait, they don’t need to know about my strange powers. Even if they would accept , it could also jeopardize them if the secret is exposed.
"You know ... I escaped through the window when they were not watching," my voice trembled.
’Okay, that was not a good way to tell a lie. At least make it believable.’
Lydia and Caroline stared at with their brows furrowed, but they did not probe any further.
"And what’s with that scarf? You don’t wear scarves." Caroline reached for it, but I quickly stepped back.
"I think it looks good on ," I said with a sheepish smile.
Lydia nodded her head. "It sure looks good on you." She dipped her hand into her pocket, bringing out so sweets. "Here, have so sweets. You look tense."
I stared at the colorful sweets in her hand. The emotions I was trying to suppress all this while ca crashing inside .
A tear trickled down my cheek. "I’m going to miss you guys." I pulled Lydia into a hug. She had this aura of a big sister, and all I wanted was to bury my head in her embrace.
"What about ?" Caroline sniffled.
"Co here." Lydia pulled her into a hug. We sobbed, then Lydia whispered in my ear, "You’ve decided." She tried to sound strong, but her voice betrayed her.
’I guess I have. I want to give Damon another chance, but he is going to have a mate in a few hours. And I just learned that I might have magic, and one thing he hates the most is magic. Sadly, there is no place left for here.’
We cried for a while, then Lydia pulled away, wiping her tears. "We need to make sure everything goes according to plan. Caroline, you will get so food, water, and clothes for Ember. Make it as light as possible."
Caroline nodded. She hugged before walking away, cleaning her cheeks with the edge of her sleeve.
My eyes lingered on her retreating figure.
"You’re hiding things from us, aren’t you?" Lydia’s voice made turn to her. She held out her hand, then placed so sweets in mine before closing them.
I blinked, avoiding her gaze.
"You don’t need to say it if you don’t want to. I just want you to be safe." She patted my head, her eyes sparkling from the tears she was trying to push back.
"Lydia... What I’m hiding... I’m hiding it not because I want to, but because I want to protect you guys. You both have done a lot for and have suffered for . I don’t want to bring harm to you," I held her hand. My brows furrowed slightly.
"It’s fine... But I just want to let you know that you can confide in us." She gave a light squeeze.
"Hide here. I’ll make sure everything is in order, okay? And we don’t need to put on the act in front of Alpha Damon. As long as the other werewolves see it, you can leave the pack in the na of running in the woods together." She gave a pat on the shoulder before walking away.
I fell to my knees, my hands trembling by my side. I looked at the sweets in my left hand, and my lips quivered. ’This is for the best... stop being emotional.’
...
The ti we had all been waiting for had arrived.
Caroline, Lydia, and I sat around a table. "The ti has co. We need to start executing the plan before midnight," Caroline said with quivering lips.
"The plan is: after you fake your mate’s attraction, you both will run into the woods. Soone will wait for you at the border so they can hand over the bag to you. Rember, you need to be careful... The rogues are running rampant through the woods." Lydia’s eyes t mine. They held emotions I could not fully explain.
"I can’t believe that we are really going to do this. I can’t believe I won’t be seeing you anymore," Caroline sobbed quietly.
I stood up. "I want to thank you both for standing up for and always being there whenever I needed you. I don’t have much to give to you except this." I pulled a book out of my gown.
Lydia took the book from . She opened it... Her eyes widened slightly. "This will help you rise in terms of respect... and of course, you could earn money from it," my voice cracked.
"Why are you giving us this? Why didn’t you use the ideas?" Caroline stared at the book. "There are even beauty recipes." She touched her face.
"Because... I don’t know. Put it to good use." I walked around and gave them one last hug. "See you guys when I see you," I muttered under my breath.
After giving them my last goodbye, they followed to the main house where the drama was supposed to unfold.
My steps echoed on the cobblestone. The moon shone brightly, illuminating my path. Caroline and Lydia had stopped a few ters away to avoid getting caught. I glanced back. Caroline’s shoulders were trembling while Lydia pulled her into a hug.
Who would have thought this was the way it was going to end?
The security was tight due to the event. I wanted to see him one last ti... I wanted to hold him one last ti. My fist clenched. But so things are best left as they are.
I raised my head. The sky was beautiful. The cloudy skies had given way to the full moon. I don’t know where I’ll be heading after leaving the Bloodshade Pack, but Lydia told the man who is going to act as my mate will bring to a port.
The air changed, as hurried footsteps approached . My heart stuttered in my chest. ’Did they find ?’
Then, before I could turn to see who it was, a sudden jolt slamd into my chest. My breath hitched, and I could feel sothing stir inside . It was like my body wasn’t mine anymore. My heartbeat grew too fast, my breath too sharp. I heard a growl, but it wasn’t from outside.
It was .
My knees buckled, my hands shook. I could feel sothing rising beneath my skin. Then, it felt like my bones were breaking. Heat rushed through my veins, twisting and tearing from the inside. My vision blurred as my body trembled.
A scream tore from my throat as the sound of bones cracking filled the air.
