I needed to justify the feeling I was having, to know if I was only suspecting sothing I shouldn’t even have to dwell on.
"Why do you suddenly want that?" He frowned. "We have an urgent task at hand, and all you wish to know is how we t. Are you crazy?"
"I believe I am."
He exhaled, giving in to when he realized I would not let it slide like he wanted. "Co over, and I will tell you all you wish to know. Everything." He beckoned for to step into the path.
There was nothing suspicious about his words; however, the glint in his eyes further strengthened my resolve to be certain the person in front of was Brys.
"Why don’t you co over here?"
"No, you co to ." He folded his arms, his stance identical to the one he had when he confronted about this mission. The man in front of looked just like my Brys. It made it impossible to suspect him, but I had to confirm. To be on the safe side.
"Why will I co over to you? If you want , co over."
He was as reluctant to step close as I was to join him, so I decided to do this another way. "I only asked to know the ti we t because it’s the most morable day of my life," I started, watching his face, reading each expression, to know if there was anything off about him. "That was the first day I ever took off on my own, and I’m glad I did. If I didn’t leave the house, I wouldn’t have saved you from those who tried to harm you."
He didn’t so much as move a muscle at my words. His expression remained the sa, with his eyes still narrowed at , waiting for to complete my story.
Clearing my throat, I continued, "I didn’t know that day sealed my fate. Taking you back ho was the best thing that ever happened to . You brought light into my world and made realize there was more to live and that love could hear all scars."
He smiled at that. "Now you know how important I am to you, don’t you? Now why don’t you co over to my side? We have wasted enough ti already and —"
"Can I hug you?" I opened my arms. "I need to feel your warmth before we embark on this journey. Who knows the difficulties we might et on our way?"
That did the trick. He didn’t argue with . Instead, he ran over, with his arms stretched, ready to embrace , only for him to stumble back in shock as his gaze landed on the dagger I thrust into his chest, narrowly missing his heart.
"You —" Blood spluttered out of his mouth as he looked at in shock, barely registering what had just happened. "Why did you do this to , Storm."
"You are not Brys." I shook my head, drawing a step back. "If you were, you would have known I tried to kill you when we t because I hate your father."
At that, the face I had fallen in love with changed into that of a hideous creature, finally showing its actual face to . Now that it wasn’t hiding behind the face of my lover, I realized my guts had been right. The man I thought was Brys all along was nothing but a demon out to thwart my progress.
As the creature’s true form was revealed, I couldn’t help but wonder what would have happened if I didn’t listen to my guts. Would I have been swallowed up by those claw-like trees?
The creature, still impaled by my dagger, let out a blood-curdling scream as it stumbled backwards, slowly transforming into its true form. Its skin turned a deep, dark brown, and its eyes glowed. The face that had once been so familiar, so beloved, was now twisted into a grotesque grimace.
I felt a rage so strong at the creature that thought it could take the face of my lover.
"You are wiser than I thought you would be, but you are no match for , little prince," it spat, its voice no longer resembling Brys’ smooth tones.
"Why don’t you give it your best shot?" I challenged. "Show what you’ve got."
The creature’s laughter grew louder, more maniacal, as it transford further. Its body contorted, twisting and elongating until it was no longer recognizable as a human.
I steeled myself for the battle ahead, knowing that I had to defeat this monster if I were to have any chance of leaving this place. This was my first challenge, after all. There would be more to co.
As I charged forward, the creature let out a deafening roar, its body glowing with an eerie, pulsing light. The air was charged with dark energy, and I knew I was in for the fight of my life. For the first ti, I realized I was actually battling sothing inhuman.
I ducked and weaved, avoiding the creature’s wild swings and claw swipes. Its attacks were fast and ferocious, but I was ready for each strike.
I struck back with my dagger, aiming for the heart. But it was too quick, and it dodged out of the way just in ti. I stumbled forward, off balance, and it took advantage of the montary lapse. It landed a solid blow to my chest, sending crashing to the ground. I gasped for breath, my vision blurring as it lood over , its eyes glowing.
But I refused to give up. Not when I wish to prove myself to my lover, more than anything else. Before Brys, I had always wanted to show my family my strength, but not anymore. Brys was all I could think.
With a fierce cry, I launched myself at the creature, my dagger flashing in the dim light. It let out a deafening roar as I struck, my dagger slicing through its dark energy and biting deep into its flesh. It stumbled backwards, its eyes wide with surprise and pain.
I pressed my advantage, striking again and again, each blow landing with deadly force. The creature howled and scread, thrashing as its body began to dissipate into nothingness as I struck the final blow.
I stumbled back, heaving as sweat trickled down my naked chest.
