STORM
I didn’t know what I was expecting when I took up this task. I knew it was dangerous. This trip might cost my life. I understood all about that, but took it up, to show my siblings and parents that I was qualified. More than that, I wanted to prove to Brys that I was strong enough to keep him safe. I had seen it in his gaze and could tell that he could keep himself safe. I’d never seen an Oga like him.
Though I tried not to think of how strong he was, I couldn’t help but recall how he had stood up to . I’d never heard of an Oga who could take an alpha head-on. He was unlike any Oga I had ever seen. My Oga.
Brys ca into my life like a damned thief. He wasn’t like any other thief though. He ca for my heart. Despite how much I tried to fight him off, to protect my heart from him, he succeeded. He made fall deeply in love with him even though I will never be caught dead telling him that.
The Oga I was supposed to kill, the one whose father tortured , was the one who made open my heart. The irony of life.
It was funny how I changed for him. I didn’t even notice it until it was too late. A ruthless and stubborn playboy like ended up being a soft man who could only be satisfied by a man.
If all the n I had rejected and the ones I slept with could see , I believe they wouldn’t recognize . Brys changed . He unapologetically did.
I glanced around the forest. Though thoughts of my pretty Oga kept occupied, I knew it wouldn’t be enough to help through this maze. For the past few hours, I had been walking in circles. I perceived that as I made a marking on a tree. It was the tenth ti I had circled back to it.
Whatever was in this forest was too strong. Father ntioned this in passing. Though he never told much about his experience in the forest as it was supposed to be a secret, he spoke of the maze forest. He stayed in it for a week.
Yeah, you read that right.
A bloody week before he left, and that was after he got through the obstacle. He never ntioned to what the obstacle was. The only thing he told was to always keep my eyes and ears open and to always discern what was real and what was not.
"I guess I will have to stay here for the night," I said out loud as I sat on the ground and leaned on the tree I had marked.
There was no sense of ti in the forest. While it was light out when I stepped into the forest, it was evening here. From what little father could disclose, I learned the forest was always like this. There’s no season in here.
I let out another sigh as I made to close my eyes, only to sit up when I heard a familiar voice.
There was no way I’d ever mistake that voice. Though we had only been together for a few weeks, I recognised his voice.
I sat up on the ground and glanced around. Even though I knew he couldn’t be in the forest, I couldn’t help the skip of my heart at the thought of seeing my Oga. I felt... Oddly excited.
For a mont, I didn’t think of how strange everything was and how impossible it was for him to enter the woods. Not only did he have no royal blood in him, but he was not from my kingdom.
Brys walking into the forest unscathed was next to impossible. He would be torn limp by limp the second his foot stepped over the line.
My mind must have conjured his voice. With my thoughts filled with the Oga all day, it wasn’t impossible for my mind not to do that.
"Storm!"
This ti, there was no mistake about it. I didn’t just conjure his voice, I heard it. He sounded like he was close to .
"Brys?" I got up from the ground, still puzzled. "Brys? Are you the one? Where are you?"
"Over here!" His response ca almost imdiately. "Where are you?" He repeated my question.
I gulped as I looked around the eerie forest. Oddly enough, it seed more foreboding than it was a few minutes ago.
For the first ti since I stepped into the forest, I was faced with the forest I had heard of.
The trees seed to loom over , their branches like skeletal fingers reaching out to snatch . The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, and the silence was oppressive.
It seed like I was seeing the real forest, the one I was told about.
I shivered, despite the warmth of the sumr evening, and called out again, "Brys, where are you? I don’t see you!"
"Follow my voice!" he replied, his tone urgent. "I’m over here, near the old oak tree. Hurry, Storm!"
I hesitated for a mont, unsure if I should trust my ears. But sothing about Brys’s voice sounded genuine, and I found myself moving towards the sound, my senses on high alert. I needed to get to his side to know if my mind was playing tricks on .
Or it could be the forest doing that. I couldn’t tell anymore.
As I walked, the trees seed to close in around , casting long, ominous shadows on the ground. I stumbled over roots and fallen branches, my heart pounding in my chest.
The forest was silent. Aside from my feet stepping on dry twigs and Brys’ occasional call, no other sounds could be heard.
"Brys?" I called out again, my voice barely above a whisper.
"I’m here," he replied, his voice getting farther away. It seed like the nearer I got to him, the further he went. "Keep coming, Storm. I’ve got you."
"Just stay where you are. I will co to get you."
