Capítulo 798: Chapter 267: If Only I Were Twenty Years Younger (Part 2)
In short, as long as the project succeeds, this is an untapped blue ocean. Or perhaps the next turning point.
The only issue is that exploring this blue ocean requires a huge amount of capital as a foundation.
…
At the Coastal Microelectronics Equipnt headquarters building, inside the General Manager’s office, Deng Maocang was carefully reading through the docunt issued from Beijing word by word.
This wasn’t the first ti he had read it.
To be honest, for a company like Coastal Microelectronics, which is primarily state-owned, being the General Manager often requires consideration not only of comrcial gains and losses but also of attitudes.
This is sothing unavoidable.
Officially speaking, they must not only pursue profits but also bear more social responsibility. Legally interpreted, state ownership ans it’s owned by the people.
So often, when higher authorities, from a comprehensive perspective, need to undertake certain matters, companies like this naturally bear more responsibility.
Of course, the company does have so degree of autonomy.
To be honest, for Deng Maocang, he instinctively does not want to take risks.
Currently, Coastal Microelectronics’ main task is still the developnt and production of lithography machines. As is well known, Huaxia’s current lithography machine technology is still relatively behind internationally, so the research and developnt tasks of Coastal Microelectronics are quite heavy.
Now, the joint letter from the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Comrce asking if they are willing to participate in future quantum simulation chip lithography machine developnt bidding leaves Deng Maocang sowhat puzzled.
Our own lithography machines haven’t even been fully understood, yet a new task is suddenly assigned? And what is this about bidding?
But speaking of this, currently there are only two companies capable of developing lithography machines in Huaxia, aside from Coastal Microelectronics, there’s only Daming Laser in Deep City.
But there’s one point, compared to Coastal Microelectronics, the other company can’t match in terms of research strength, technical accumulation, or current business scale.
After all, this company originally specialized in lasers, and only six years ago did they venture into the field of lithography machines, where lithography is currently a sideline.
So the word “bidding” in the docunt is quite intriguing to Deng Maocang, which is why he is ticulously reading this docunt word by word.
There’s no choice, not only must this position consider company operations, R&D, and market, but also ponder what the higher-ups an.
Simply speaking, whether the higher-ups truly want to push this matter forward.
If indeed, there is a big push to accomplish this, then the investnt is worth it. Even if, ultimately, nothing substantial is achieved, he cannot be blad for a wrong decision.
But if the higher-ups are not genuinely interested or their attitude is ambiguous, and this docunt is rely a casual inquiry about whether they are interested in doing it, then he must carefully weigh things.
If successful, everyone would be happy, but if a huge amount of money is put in with no achievent, there would be much to discuss.
In severe cases, it might even affect his résumé. After all, a lot of people are eyeing his General Manager position.
Technically speaking, Deng Maocang doesn’t really care about these things, but he doesn’t want to take the bla for such inexplicable matters.
“Knock knock knock”
The knocking redirected Deng Maocang’s attention from the docunt as he called out: “Co in.”
Soon the office door was pushed open, and the secretary poked halfway inside: “Mr. Deng, Chief Engineer Xu is here.”
“Chief Engineer Xu, please co in.” He stood up and personally welcod Chief Engineer Xu into the office.
He had genuine respect for Chief Engineer Xu.
Xu Haiwen, now a bona fide leader in Huaxia’s lithography machine industry, gave up a high paying position overseas during the technological vacuum period of lithography machines and returned to shoulder the major responsibilities.
Deng Maocang knew that back then, Coastal Microelectronics didn’t even have a complete prototype, relying solely on dismantling obsolete foreign equipnt for research.
At that ti, Chief Engineer Xu began leading his team, tackling technology step by step from basic optics, precision chanics, to control system modules. After over twenty years of R&D, they developed the current 90nm comrcial lithography machine.
It could be said that everyone endured the tough tis together. Most importantly, Xu Haiwen was not only patient, spending months isolated in the lab, but also very low-key.
Despite making huge contributions, he never sought power or fa, even shunning various promotions.
Truly a born laboratory individual, even now he prefers staying in the lab guiding his team.
“Mr. Deng, can’t this be said over the phone? Why call to co over? The lab is really busy.”
Entering, Xu Haiwen asked a bit impatiently with frowned eyebrows.
Deng Maocang didn’t mind; having worked together for a long ti, he knew very well the temperant of this Chief Engineer.
“Old Xu, the lab isn’t in such a rush, you’re not young anymore, let the younger folks take over more tasks. Co, have a cup of tea first.”
“I let them do the work, but I need to oversee things to feel assured. I’ll skip the tea; I have everything over there. Let’s get straight to the business at hand and save so ti.”
“Alright then, first take a look at this.” Deng Maocang nodded, directly handing over the docunt on the table.
Xu Haiwen took the docunt and casually sat on the sofa to start reading.
Unlike Deng Maocang’s word by word reading, Chief Engineer Xu spent just over five minutes before putting the docunt down and remarked, “Coordinate with quantum simulation chip developnt and develop corresponding lithography equipnt? Looks like an attempt at a shortcut.”
“Hmm… perhaps that’s the intention? But do you think it might be too hasty? Can this quantum simulation general-purpose computer ntioned in the docunt truly replace the status of classic electronic computers?”
Deng Maocang straightforwardly asked.
Xu Haiwen paused for a while, shook his head, and answered directly, “I don’t know. As I get older, it’s slower to embrace these erging concepts than younger folks.
But I know of Qiao Yu; I watched his livestream replay recently. The quantum simulation technology he proposed does have application potential.
However, the project is enormous, and considering his age, he likely lacks experience hosting such large engineering projects. Then again, he’s currently the most sought-after scientist. So, I’m unsure.”
Deng Maocang knew Xu Haiwen wasn’t shirking responsibility, he was rely stating the truth.
No one understands better than their generation of engineers how difficult it is to create sothing from scratch.
Besides, really speaking, although they don’t have physical equipnt as a reference, they at least have various technical paraters from foreign finished products as a reference.
However, the project proposed by Qiao Yu is sothing Huaxia suggested firstly, with no successful cases worldwide, making it akin to blindfolded research.
The only advantage, perhaps, is that Huaxia now is not the relatively poor Huaxia of Y2K.
Moreover, over the years, advances in microelectronics, computer science, quantum science, precision chanics, and material science have accumulated significant technological capital supporting innovation.
“That’s also my perspective, which might be the reason higher-ups are consulting our opinion. Are you suggesting we not join the excitent in this bid?”
Xu Haiwen contemplated for a mont and replied, “I’m not completely dismissing the project, but considering the ti factor, why not submit a recomndation.
Let another enterprise handle the matter. For now, we continue focusing on 28nm DUV lithography machine R&D. Even if the project succeeds, electronic chips won’t imdiately be displaced from the market.
Our projects are still valuable. If ultimately the project fails, at least we won’t have diverted too much energy, allowing current projects to proceed uninterrupted.
Huaxia’s technological growth requires people to have visions for the future, but there should also be individuals ensuring present stability and progress. Given our historical mission, there’s no need to partake in such aggressive projects for the ti being. Anyway, that’s just my opinion.”
Being old acquaintances, Deng Maocang sensed the deep disappointnt in Xu Haiwen’s tone.
He seed to envision the unspoken words from Xu Haiwen: “If I were twenty years younger, this could be done.”
