Claire paused and said, "I have a case in court tomorrow morning. Could you have Joy deliver the docunts to her?"
"Do as you please." Sean Lockwood replied indifferently, "As long as the papers are signed."
After Sean left, Claire called Joy into the office to give so instructions and sent her Sean’s ho address.
"If anything unusual happens, contact imdiately."
"Unusual?" Joy was a bit puzzled, "I thought it was all settled and it was just signing the papers? What could be unusual."
Claire pressed her lips together.
Even though Sean had told her that the divorce with Jade Sutton wouldn’t have any obstacles, and Jade herself was eager to be rid of him.
Yet Claire still felt a bit uneasy.
She said, "It’s always good to be a little cautious in everything, don’t let your guard down just because it’s only signing a docunt."
Joy cheerfully replied, "As you command!"
Early the next morning, Joy took the divorce agreent and found herself at Sean’s doorstep, following Claire’s directions.
Joy pressed the doorbell.
The door opened from the inside, and into Joy’s view stepped a striking beauty in a red coat and heavy makeup.
The woman’s features were exquisite; she looked familiar, yet Joy couldn’t quite place where she had seen her before.
Jade Sutton frowned slightly upon seeing a stranger, asking, "Who are you?"
Joy snapped back, "Hello, I’m Joy Sharp from the Firm. I’m here to see Miss Jade Sutton."
"That’s ."
"Miss Jade, I’ve brought the divorce agreent between you and Mr. Lockwood, he said you’d be signing it today."
Jade scrutinized Joy up and down.
A clean, innocent face, a youthful earnest smile, and... a cheap, shabby appearance.
"Why would Sean hire you as his divorce attorney?" Jade’s tone wasn’t very pleasant.
"Originally, it was to be President Hale, but she’s in court today. President Lockwood said the papers should be signed urgently, so he sent over quickly."
Joy explained straightforwardly, ending with a smile at Jade, seemingly oblivious to her sarcasm.
Jade’s eyes held a hint of dislike.
She despised such clean, clear, and foolish people.
Just like Claire when she was young.
"President Hale? You an Claire?"
"Yes, Miss Sutton, do you know President Hale?"
"Of course, we’re more than acquaintances, we’re quite close. We used to play together as children." Jade lifted her lips slightly, seemingly casual, "Isn’t she quite hard to approach at tis?"
Joy thought seriously for a mont and said, "At first, yes, but President Hale is quite soft-hearted despite her tough exterior, she’s really good to us at the firm!"
As she spoke, she looked up and smiled at Jade, "Since Miss Sutton knew President Hale from childhood, President Hale must have been good to you back then too."
Jade’s eyes darkened.
There was a fleeting, subtle envy in her peach blossom-shaped eyes.
"So it seems, Claire has changed a lot over the years."
Joy froze briefly, "What?"
Jade stepped aside to let her in, saying, "Don’t you know? Claire is an illegitimate child, her mom was a maid at soone’s house, climbed into the master’s bed, and got kicked out afterwards. So, she wasn’t raised very well. When she was in elentary school, Claire liked to bully her classmates, throwing their stationery, ripping their textbooks, even locking them in the bathroom."
Watching the shock in Joy’s eyes, the corner of Jade’s mouth curled into an unnoticeable smile of satisfaction.
If there was anything that made her happiest, it was seeing Claire hated and isolated by everyone, helplessly hiding behind her like she did when they were kids.
But ever since Tristan Lockwood showed up, everything changed.
Cynthia Hale and her gang were intimidated by Tristan and didn’t dare to frequently bully Claire, so she no longer hid behind Jade, holding her hand.
Now, friends, money, status, worth, even Tristan Lockwood, Claire had them all.
While Jade had nothing.
If she couldn’t have happiness, she certainly wouldn’t let Claire enjoy her comfort!
Joy recovered from her shock and rationally said, "Miss Sutton, maybe there is so misunderstanding. I don’t think President Hale is the type to do those things."
Jade’s pupils shrank slightly.
The last person who said this was that pretty boy, Dylan Skinner, who was around Claire.
They were all like they were possessed, always speaking up for Claire.
She gave a sheepish laugh, "Well, Claire was just a kid at the ti; kids tend to do the wrong things. But now it seems she’s really changed for the better, or else you wouldn’t admire her so much, right?"
Having her admiration pointed out, Joy embarrassedly laughed.
Jade’s smile faded as she turned to take a disposable cup, walked to the water cooler, poured a cup of water, and handed it to Joy.
Joy reached out to take it.
As her fingertips touched the cup, whether due to Jade’s trembling hand or not, the cup suddenly titled, spilling scalding water over Joy’s hand.
Joy inhaled sharply, instinctively retracting her hand in pain, brows furrowing.
Jade hurriedly searched the room but couldn’t find any ice or burn ointnt, so she said, "Lawyer Shaw, maybe you should go to the hospital and get it checked out, burns aren’t trivial, a girl might not be wanted if a scar remains."
Joy was anxious upon hearing "not wanted," worried if Jude Jacobs might find her hand unattractive.
Still, she looked toward the divorce papers on the table and said, "Miss Sutton, I’ll wait for you to sign before I leave."
Jade picked up the agreent, frowned, and said, "It’s already wet."
Then flipped to the signature page, "Sean’s handwriting is sared too."
Joy sighed irritably, "Yesterday, President Hale specifically reminded to be careful, yet sothing went wrong anyway."
Jade felt quite sympathetic and helped hold Joy’s hand, saying, "Sean is very punctual, you delayed this, I’m afraid he’ll bla it on you, and then Claire might use you as a scapegoat."
Joy’s hand hurt badly, but she forced a smile and said a few words:
"President Hale wouldn’t do that."
Right after Joy spoke, her wrist suddenly hurt, causing her to sharply inhale, instinctively flinging Jade’s hand away.
Jade’s face turned sowhat ugly, "I’m helping you out of goodwill, what attitude is this?"
Joy’s hand was unbearably painful, she felt that Jade clutched her wrist forcefully just a mont ago, but couldn’t say much, she apologized, stood up, and got ready to leave.
Jade wouldn’t let it go easily, blocking her way with a cold face, saying, "I may be divorcing Sean Lockwood, but that doesn’t an a little lawyer like you can be insolent here. I’ll complain about you to your firm right now."
