This remark sounds like it’s trying to comfort her.
In fact, it’s a way to indirectly find out what her relationship with Sean Lockwood is.
After all, Sean is a complicated person, and the Lockwood Matriarch couldn’t figure out his true intentions. It’s always best to be cautious because if he does develop feelings for Claire Hale, it could end up being difficult to manage.
Claire naturally understood the Lockwood Matriarch’s intention, so she clarified: "Grandma, President Lockwood is busy with work, and I’m not that familiar with him. It wouldn’t be right to disturb him."
The Lockwood Matriarch tried to persuade her a few more tis, but only when Claire repeatedly declined did she change the subject and say, "Claire, it’s been almost six months since you and Tristan divorced. I’m getting old, and who knows how much longer I’ll be around. I just hope you find a safe harbor to rely on."
Recently, though still undergoing treatnt, the Lockwood Matriarch clearly felt more powerless than before.
She knows her body better than anyone.
She likely won’t hold on for much longer.
Claire’s eyes turned red as she said, "Grandma, you will definitely live to a hundred, and I’ll always be by your side."
"Your marriage to Tristan was also partly our doing. If you don’t mind, your grandpa and I would like to introduce you as our adopted granddaughter to others and help you find a good ho."
The Lockwood Matriarch’s eyes were sincere, with an aged but hopeful gaze.
Claire’s eyes flickered.
She knew all too well that while the Lockwood Matriarch’s words had a caring elent, on the other hand, she was also worried about her causing any complications that might affect Tristan’s future marriage.
So she lowered her eyes and gently said, "I will do as you say."
...
Downstairs.
Zoey Adler couldn’t sit still in the house and dragged Tristan out to the courtyard for a walk.
Tristan barely glanced at Sean Lockwood before following her to the courtyard.
"You asked to play along with this drama, and I really gave it my all. So, what do you think? Did I do a top-notch job?" Zoey eagerly asked as soon as they got outside.
Tristan, disinterested, replied, "It was alright."
Zoey said, "I see your grandpa and grandma are really pushing hard for you to get married and have kids. You wouldn’t actually give them a child, would you?"
Tristan shot her a sideways glance and emotionlessly said, "Don’t worry, even if I have a child, it won’t be with you."
"Then who? Claire Hale?" Zoey probed while observing his expression. "I just talked with Claire Hale, and she seems to have no feelings left for you."
Seeing Tristan unresponsive, she continued, "The last ti at the hospital entrance, the way she looked, it seed she was really reluctant to let you go. I didn’t expect her to get over it so quickly."
"She’s doing it on purpose."
Tristan replied coldly.
"Purposely behaving as if she couldn’t leave , thinking I would get tired of her acting that way and propose a breakup."
"If you knew that, then why did you still propose it?"
Tristan’s eyes dimd ever so slightly.
"She would rather beco soone she’s not, just to get rid of . I’m afraid if I forcibly keep her by my side, she might end up doing sothing to harm herself."
Zoey was taken aback.
She had originally thought that this ti, Tristan really got tired of Claire Hale.
The affection he previously showed seed, at most, to be driven by possessiveness.
But she hadn’t expected he would let her go for this reason.
However, Zoey, being a woman, saw things from a woman’s perspective. She pondered for a mont and suddenly asked, "Since you can’t let her go, why didn’t you treat her well when you were together? Why did you have to make her give up on you?"
Questioning whether she had hit the nail on the head, Tristan’s expression changed slightly.
"I gave her whatever she wanted." He said grimly, "Over the years, there was nothing she asked for that I didn’t give her. But she, with anyone else, could be gentle and kind. Yet with , she never showed a good face."
Talking about this, Tristan also felt a bit disheartened.
Back then, when Claire forced him to marry, he even repeatedly asked if she truly liked him.
Her answers were always those two cold words, ’not really.’
But after they parted, she told him she did like him.
With her feelings so fickle, how was he to know how genuine she was toward him?
"And what about your feelings for her?"
Zoey suddenly asked abruptly.
"Have you ever considered that the ’good’ you think you were to Claire might not have been what she wanted? Have you ever truly tried to understand what she wanted?"
Tristan frowned slightly, "Don’t act like you know her so well."
He had known her for over a decade, and even he couldn’t grasp her thoughts, so how could Zoey possibly know?
Zoey shrugged indifferently, "I don’t know her as well as you. But after all, you’re a man. Haven’t you heard the saying ’n are from Mars, won are from Venus’? You two are from different planets; naturally, your ways of thinking about relationships are different."
She said it offhandedly, hoping to humble his stubborn, prideful deanor.
However, Tristan seed to have truly taken her words to heart.
He even pondered it seriously for a mont, then asked, "Then what do you think she wants?"
"What she wants is sothing you have to discover on your own. If you’re not willing to patiently be tolerant of her, how can you expect to gain her tolerance?"
After Zoey finished speaking, she paused abruptly, as if sothing occurred to her, and said:
"Speaking of which, could it be that you also mind Claire Hale’s illegitimate status, which is why you’ve always treated her with such indifference and distance?"
"Of course not."
Those words were uttered by Tristan with almost no hesitation.
He never cared about Claire Hale’s origins.
She had suffered enough bullying in the Hale Family since childhood. If not for her ntion of that young boy’s appearance...
At this thought, Tristan suddenly stopped in his tracks.
Zoey noticed he wasn’t beside her and turned around to see him standing there, lost in thought.
"What’s wrong again?" she asked.
"It’s nothing."
Tristan quickly regained his composure, his deanor returning to being distant, as he took long strides past her, heading back to the house.
Zoey pursed her lips, casting a disheartened glance at his straight, indifferent back.
Such a cold-hearted man.
After entering the house, Tristan went to the study to say goodbye to Byron Lockwood.
Upon leaving the study, he saw Claire coming out of the Lockwood Matriarch’s room.
"Is Grandma asleep?" he asked.
"Yes."
Claire’s gaze quickly swept over him without a mont’s pause before she descended the stairs.
Downstairs, Sean was also about to leave, so he walked out alongside Claire.
Tristan watched their backs, his expression growing colder.
"It looks like Tristan and Zoey are serious this ti."
As they left the house, Sean casually remarked.
"Tonight’s dinner was like formally bringing soone ho. Before, Tristan had never brought anyone back."
