Howard slowly took out the brocade box containing the ring from his pocket, opened it, and even without turning on the lights in the room, the ring still twinkled with a blinding glint under the dim light coming in through the window.

Howard’s lips were tightly pressed together as he stared at the pair of rings for a long ti, then slowly clutched them in his hand, his arms falling weakly to the floor.

The eastern sun was angry, the first ray of sunlight entered the window, and Howard, who had been sitting dejectedly on the floor smoking all night, lifted his red eyes.
Today was truly a beautiful day, the sky blue and the clouds white. He snapped the last cigarette in his hand, then slowly got up from the floor, went to the bathroom for a shower, changed into casual clothes, took his car keys, and left the house.
Within an hour, Howard was back ho, holding a bag of milk and baguette he had bought from a breakfast shop not far away.
He casually tidied up the empty plates on the dining table, threw them into the sink, wiped the table clean, and neatly arranged the milk and baguette he had bought on top, then picked up the divorce agreent Madeleine had given him the night before.
Howard’s throat moved up and down twice before he reached out to flip through the content of the docunts; he stood by the dining table, lost in thought for a long ti, then took the divorce agreent and walked into the study.

Madeleine had fallen asleep on the balcony last night and was awakened by the heat of the sun. She raised her hand sowhat blankly to block the blinding light, and after a long daze, she slowly got up, went to the bathroom for a cursory wash, and then left the master bedroom.
Howard was sitting on the sofa, looking rather normal except for so redness around his eyes. When he saw Madeleine co out, he stood up and asked, “Awake?”
Madeleine hadn’t expected to see Howard imdiately upon leaving her room, and she paused briefly, then nodded.
“I bought breakfast, have so,” Howard paused for a second, then added, “milk and baguette.”
Madeleine did not refuse. She gave a small nod and walked with Howard to the dining room.
The two of them didn’t engage in much conversation but silently sat face to face, each eating their baguette and drinking their milk. It seed as if they had a good appetite, finishing everything before stopping.
Howard took a paper napkin first, offering it to Madeleine, then took one for himself, wiping his hands, and tossing the wet napkin into a nearby trash can. He looked up at Madeleine, waiting until she had finished wiping, before he finally said, “Madeleine, about the divorce…”
