Chapter 515: 193 Threat_2

In the past two years, Nanny Gu had returned to the Lian Mansion seeking Yueyao more than once, but to no avail—Yueyao refused to see her. Nanny Gu deeply regretted her actions; she should not have abandoned her charge. Otherwise, she would still be living well and wouldn’t have to worry about funding her son’s education.

Lady Mo did not bother with pleasantries and directly asked Nanny Gu, “When the Second Old Master passed away, did he leave a key for the Third Young Lady?” If she got a definite answer, she would know how to proceed.

Nanny Gu shook her head and said, “When the Second Old Master passed away, he left a box for the young lady. I only assu that the box contained many silver notes, but as for what else was inside the box, I am not sure.” Nanny Gu hadn’t seen the contents inside the box, so naturally she wasn’t certain whether a key was included.

Lady Mo stared at Nanny Gu and said, “You really don’t know.”

Nanny Gu’s complexion darkened, “Madam, I truly do not know. If I knew, would I not tell you?”

After thinking it over, Lady Mo said, “The Third Young Lady has changed so much; haven’t you noticed anything odd about her?” Lady Mo always found Yueyao’s behavior very strange. Yueyao now seed like a completely different person compared to when she had first returned. Just attributing it to a nightmare seed inadequate—even if Madam Ma had appeared in Yueyao’s dreams and spoken ill of her, it was still unlikely to alter soone’s temperant completely.

Nanny Gu had long felt that sothing was off about Yueyao, but these were only her feelings without any concrete evidence, so she now dared not say much.

Lady Mo, losing patience, said, “Nanny Hua, direct the accounting room to give ten taels of silver to Nanny Gu!” This was a clear sign that she was being dismissed.

Nanny Gu did not want to leave just yet and pleaded with Lady Mo, “Madam, please let see the Third Young Lady one more ti! After all, I nursed her. Day and night, I have been longing to see her. Madam, I beg you.”

Lady Mo’s face showed a mocking smile, yet she fulfilled Nanny Gu’s request, “Go invite the Third Young Lady here, tell her I need to see her.” Lady Mo knew well that if she directly ntioned Nanny Gu’s visit, Yueyao’s cold nature would definitely prevent her from coming.

Unfortunately, Lady Mo still overestimated her influence. The Maid she sent ca back and reported, “Madam, the Maid from Lanxi Courtyard said that the Third Young Lady did not sleep well last night and did not dare disturb her. They will send her over as soon as she wakes up.” This maid also felt that Yueyao was showing increasingly less respect for the Madam, even daring to ignore her summons.

Lady Mo scoffed, “She didn’t sleep well last night? It must be because I have been so vigilant that she couldn’t send any ssages out. That’s why she couldn’t sleep.” Following this, she instructed Granny Hua, “Take her to Lanxi Courtyard.”

Granny Hua led Nanny Gu to Lanxi Courtyard.

Yueyao was reading in her bedroom. Upon hearing of Nanny Gu’s return, Yueyao’s lips curled into a cold smile and she said, “Just tell her I’m still sleeping, let her wait!”

Leaning back in her chair, Yueyao spoke to Xiang Wei, who was busying herself with herbs nearby, “Why are there so many greedy people in this world?” Both Lady Mo and Nanny Gu were examples of such insatiable greed.

Yueyao was aware that Nanny Gu had tried to visit her in Lian Mansion several tis, but she had refused all visits. Without asking anyone, she knew Nanny Gu was not faring well. Yueyao sneered continuously; having fallen on hard tis, Nanny Gu now wished to return. She scornfully thought, where in the world could one find such cheap deals? Without the support of the Lian family and no financial backing, her son could forget becoming an official in the future—he might even struggle to survive.

Xiang Wei chuckled lightly, “Let’s not talk about people. Take these plants, for example; if planted too densely, they still compete for nutrients. Yet humans are even greedier, stopping at nothing for fa, fortune, or wealth, and they would not fear even if it ans falling into hell. Miss, you need not take such people to heart.”

Nanny Gu waited in the living room for Yueyao for quite so ti but did not see her. The maids were also very neglectful; they didn’t even offer her a cup of tea, leaving Nanny Gu so thirsty her throat was smoking.

Nanny Gu originally thought of eting the young lady to express her hardships, beg a little, and even if she couldn’t return to the young lady’s side, she might gain so benefits, but she didn’t expect the young lady to ignore her.

Nanny Hao, seeing this, felt it was a bit inappropriate, and entered the bedroom, saying, “Young lady, is this really proper? After all, she did nurse you as a child.” The wet nurses of great households must be respected. If Yueyao didn’t show Nanny Gu respect, spreading the word would also tarnish her reputation.

Yueyao didn’t care and said, “Let her wait a bit longer.”

It was almost ti for lunch when Nanny Gu saw a maid carrying water into the room. Nanny Gu’s eyelids twitched repeatedly, she hadn’t expected Yueyao would sleep till noon before getting up.

When Yueyao ca out and saw Nanny Gu, she asked emotionlessly, “Nanny Gu, what brings you here?”

Desperately, Nanny Gu said, “This old servant misses the young lady, so…” but her words stopped short amid Yueyao’s cold laughter.

Yueyao impatiently said, “Miss ? I know very well why you ca to the Lian family. It’s because you are having a hard ti outside and suddenly rembered the comfortable days here, so don’t utter those insincere words in front of . Nanny Hao, please escort her out.”

Upon hearing this, Nanny Gu burst into tears, crying, “Young lady, you were like my own daughter to , the one I nursed. How could you say such heart-wrenching things?”

Yueyao scoffed, “A servant who betrays her master deserves to be beaten to death. If it weren’t for the fact that you nursed , you would have been dead already.”

Turning pale, Nanny Gu looked at Yueyao and suddenly cried out, “Young lady, I nursed you once, and this is how I end up. Aren’t you afraid that people will be disheartened by this?”

Yueyao couldn’t be bothered to entangle with Nanny Gu any further.

Hua Lei, however, angrily said, “Nanny Gu, when you left, the young lady gave you seven or eight hundred taels of silver for your retirent. That amount is more than enough for you to live a worry-free life. How can you say the young lady has no regard for old affection? It’s completely due to your own greed… ”

Nanny Hao glanced at Hua Lei; this was the unequivocal truth, how could they babble about it elsewhere? Nanny Hao went to help Nanny Gu, seeing that Nanny Gu refused to get up.

Xiang Wei whispered sothing into Xi Yu’s ear.

Xi Yu also went over to help Nanny Hao and seeing that Nanny Gu still didn’t understand, she whispered in Nanny Gu’s ear in a mosquito’s voice, “The young lady already granted you the grace to leave with dignity. Don’t really take her for an easy target. If you provoke the young lady, even if she doesn’t mind, Uncle Master will intervene. By then, not to ntion your son’s aspirations for a title, you should pray for his survival. Don’t think this is a re threat. If you dare go around slandering the young lady’s reputation, see if anyone will care for you in your old age.”

Nanny Gu looked at Xi Yu as if she had seen a ghost.

Smiling, Xi Yu raised her voice, “If you don’t believe it, I can’t help it, just don’t regret it.” The young lady is too kind-hearted, typically bullied by the weak and feared by the strong. Looking at Nanny Gu’s defeated face, Xi Yu felt that Sister Xiang Wei’s thod was the most effective.

Nanny Gu didn’t dare say another word and hurried out of Lanxi Courtyard.
