Chapter 1716: Chapter 1716: Incompatible
“What… what’s going on?” Everyone was dumbfounded. Wasn’t the helicopter supposed to rescue them? Why did it crash as soon as it arrived?
Realizing sothing was off, Gu Fan quickly directed everyone to run, aiming to return to the open area they had just left. If his guess was correct, the helicopter crash likely had sothing to do with the monster.
“Hurry! Run faster!” Gu Fan shouted as he led the group back to their previous location. The surrounding area was packed with buildings and narrow streets, leaving them vulnerable to attacks.
Suddenly, a shadow darted out from behind, moving swiftly and snatching the person at the very back.
“Ahhh! Ahhh! Soone save !” The person scread desperately for help, but it was futile. The group couldn’t catch up to the monster, nor did they have the courage to try rescuing anyone.
At that mont, everyone had just one thought in their minds: run—escape this place as far as possible.
But before long, the monster launched another attack, dragging yet another person away. The sheer hopelessness and agonized screams sent chills down their spines—no one wanted to be next.
Gu Fan pushed all thoughts aside, focusing on just one thing: running. Running as fast as he could.
Li Shi, being a woman, would have been left in the back if Gu Fan weren’t pulling her along. In that case, she would have been the one taken.
The other two female classmates also had male classmates helping them escape, proving that adversity reveals true character.
Yet the path to the open area was still a decent distance away—enough for the monster to launch multiple attacks. Gu Fan knew they couldn’t keep running like this, but he couldn’t co up with a better plan.
Unfamiliar with the area and panicking, Gu Fan led the group down the wrong path, eventually leading them into a dead-end alley.
There wasn’t even ti to bla Gu Fan. Hearing the growls coming from behind sent chills down everyone’s spines.
Gu Fan glanced at a nearby building, then kicked open a locked door with all his might, leading everyone inside.
The interior of the building was dark, damp, and foul-slling. But there was no ti to care about such things—everyone just ran, not daring to fall behind.
As they ran, they turned a corner in the hallway and collided with sothing, eliciting a chorus of startled screams.
“It’s you guys?” The boss looked at Gu Fan and his group, his expression full of surprise.
Gu Fan’s group was equally shocked, then noticed the boss and his group looked disheveled. Not only were there only four of them left, but Old Four was injured and being supported by Old Three.
“Stay back!” Old Two imdiately pointed a gun at Gu Fan, his eyes full of vigilance and hostility.
The boss opened his mouth to speak, but then his eyes caught sight of Old Six’s backpack in Gu Fan’s hands. His face filled with astonishnt as he quickly asked, “Where did you get that bag?”
“This bag? You’ve got the nerve to ask. If you guys hadn’t taken all the food, I wouldn’t have had to risk going into the woods to retrieve this bag,” Gu Fan replied in a tone of resentnt.
The boss frowned, surprised that Gu Fan had actually done such a thing.
Of course, Gu Fan didn’t ntion that he had only managed to return safely from the woods because the boss’ group had drawn the monster’s attention away.
The boss added, “Judging by your situation, you don’t seem to be doing too well either. We should stick together—it’s safer to watch each other’s backs.”
Hearing this, Gu Fan gave the boss a suspicious look. The sa boss who had abandoned them earlier was now suggesting teaming up again—it was clear he hadn’t fared well after splitting off.
Thinking about it, Old Five had been snatched away by the monster, Old Four was injured and required care, and their group was short-handed. No wonder the boss was now shalessly seeking to regroup.
The boss noticed everyone hesitating and pressed further, “What’s there to think about? Make up your minds!”
Gu Fan was about to negotiate conditions when a low growl sounded nearby, draining the color from everyone’s faces. They hurriedly clustered together for safety.
The group now resembled a tightly clenched fist, with the won protected in the center and the n forming a defensive circle around them. Every body trembled with fear.
After a mont, the monster seed unable to find an opening and didn’t attack again.
Still, no one let their guard down. Step by cautious step, they inched forward, slowly leaving the building behind. Finally, they found a relatively open road and returned to the previous open area.
They were finally safe. However, the recent fright left everyone’s hearts feeling overwheld. So were so shaken that their legs gave out, causing them to collapse on the ground.
Initially, they’d hoped the helicopter would help them escape this nightmare. But not only had it crashed, the monster had carried off two people.
Gu Fan felt a pang of guilt. After all, it was his call to run—if everyone had stayed put and banded together, perhaps they could have scared off the monster and avoided losing two people.
Li Shi tried to console him. In such a terrifying situation, it was hard to stay calm and make rational decisions. Besides, staying put might not have been enough to deter the monster. She advised Gu Fan not to bla himself too much.
While Li Shi’s words seed reasonable, the group couldn’t shake the feeling that sothing was still amiss.
The boss couldn’t help but interject, “Hey, miss—why are you always defending him? Do you have feelings for this guy or sothing?”
His comnt made Li Shi blush furiously. She quickly countered, “You’ve got so nerve to talk! If you hadn’t tried to abandon us, things wouldn’t have turned out like this.”
The sudden rebuttal caught the boss off guard, and he nodded, admitting fault on his group’s part.
The ntion of the boss’ previous betrayal rekindled everyone’s anger. Images of his group’s ruthless actions resurfaced in their minds, including the ti they shot an elderly man to assert their dominance.
Gu Fan disliked the boss and his group too. Teaming up with such people ant risking betrayal or being used like pawns at any mont.
Still, under the current circumstances, the group had to stick together. For now, they’d have to tolerate each other.
Gu Fan reasoned that the helicopter crash would surely alert rescue teams outside. They’d have to take notice and co up with new plans.
The boss asked again, “What’s the deal with that helicopter? Did soone outside realize you were trapped here?”
Seeing the boss’ worried expression, Gu Fan casually replied, “What’s the matter—are you scared the outside world will find you? Let remind you of sothing: do you realize how dangerous our current situation is?”
His words carried a hint of provocation, which imdiately irritated Old Two. He raised his gun and snarled, “Watch your mouth, kid, or I’ll shoot you.”
“Here we go again. Maybe we should just go our separate ways,” Gu Fan retorted, standing his ground for once.
Now, the fragile alliance between the two groups was on the verge of collapse again, further worsening an already precarious situation.
