Chapter 205: Chapter 205: Can’t Leave Chapter 205: Chapter 205: Can’t Leave “We can’t go back?” Sam gasped in shock.
He glanced at Chen Ke, sensing that the other wasn’t panicking but instead seed deep in thought, as if weighing sothing.
Seeing that Chen Ke didn’t want to speak at the mont, he looked towards Dr. Jiu Lin.
“Doctor, how long have you been here? You must have also looked for a way to leave, right?” Sam asked.
“Of course, but theoretically, there is only one way to travel to other tilines. Ti entanglents happen occasionally, causing many people worldwide to disappear without a trace each year and just as many to suddenly appear. It’s all because they were right at the nexus of a ti entanglent. But that nexus isn’t a door you can just open whenever you wish,” Dr. Jiu Lin replied.
“So, you’re saying that finding the subway won’t give us hope to return?” Sam asked anxiously. He had held on until now only because holding a gun had distracted him, coupled with a 100% hope of returning.
Now, Dr. Jiu Lin’s words shattered that hope.
“You can’t possibly know when or where ti entanglents might occur, so even if you manage to find the subway, it might not be of any use,” Dr. Jiu Lin stated bluntly, unconcerned with Sam’s feelings.
“But you’re from the Spiritual Ability Research Institute, aren’t you? You must have prepared for this! Don’t tell you haven’t researched it!” Sam pressed urgently.
“The federal governnt doesn’t fund our institute for nothing. We research various fields, but our primary focus is still on military applications, which can be rapidly translated into combat strength for the federal forces. Ti travel, despite its potential, hit a snag and solving it seed indefinitely postponed due to an unforeseen setback,” Dr. Jiu Lin explained.
“A setback… what setback?” Sam asked.
“That’s not important. What I want to tell you is that ti travel is theoretically feasible, but no one has ever successfully done it. Our most advanced experint was rely detecting telecommunication signals from another tiline via quantum channel, and trying to send signals back at the sa frequency,” Dr. Jiu Lin shook her head.
Sam sighed, holding his gun and looking a bit despondent.
Chen Ke patted his shoulder, “You’re not even afraid of turning to ashes; what does it matter if we can’t return?”
“You’re really comforting, Chen Ke,” Sam chided sowhat sarcastically.
Chen Ke smiled. All he wanted right now was to get back to the Rumi Hotel as quickly as possible. Many injured needed dical supplies, and having Diana alone with Ying Baiyi felt sowhat risky.
“You ntioned earlier, there was another level 9 agent; did he perish?” Chen Ke asked.
“Yes, but not by the hands of a monster,” Dr. Jiu Lin said.
Chen Ke and Sam had more or less guessed the answer.
“Ying Baiyi killed him,” Dr. Jiu Lin looked at them, knowing they had guessed the answer.
“He killed his own partner? Why?” Chen Ke was astonished. What would a fight between two level 9 agents look like? An intense outdoor PK where the loser’s gear explodes all over?
“His mind collapsed under imnse pressure. It’s my fault, for giving him false hope… I told him about a theoretically feasible way to leave this world, but he misconstrued the theory into sothing tangible… and then, disregarding everyone’s situation, he led a group of survivors on a futile search,” Dr. Jiu Lin explained.
“Yes, he told us he was going to find the subway we were on…” Sam said.
“So, you were on the subway, just happening to pass through the nexus…” Dr. Jiu Lin smiled, then closed her notebook.
“You still haven’t told us why Ying Baiyi killed his own partner,” Chen Ke prompted.
“Because he tried to stop Ying Baiyi from taking the survivors away. After I filled him in on the situation of the world, Ying Baiyi had been ntally unstable,” Dr. Jiu Lin shook her head.
Chen Ke took a deep breath. If Ying Baiyi lost his sanity, everyone in the Rumi Hotel could be in danger.
Not to ntion the civilians, the only capable Diana not only had lost her Spiritual Power but was also severely injured; Ying Baiyi could effortlessly annihilate them.
“This place is safe. If you encounter other survivors, you can bring them here,” Dr. Jiu Lin said.
“Hey, good idea, it’s better than the ho…” Sam started, but Chen Ke suddenly stepped in front of him, treading on his toes.
“If we find more people, we’ll bring them, but now it’s ti for us to leave,” Chen Ke said.
“Leave…? It’s pure chaos above, and it’s still more than ten hours until dawn,” Dr. Jiu Lin frowned.
“Well… we’ll find a way…” Chen Ke said, patting Sam and walking towards the door.
Sam looked puzzled. He didn’t know why Chen Ke was so wary of this woman, but he didn’t ask further, just followed him out of the door.
The two walked halfway down the corridor when the sound of Dr. Jiu Lin closing the door ca from behind. The only light that had been escaping from the office was now gone, making their path pitch black.
“Are you really decided on going up?” Sam asked in a whisper.
“This hospital is huge, Sam. We’ll go down to the fourth or third basent, clear out so dical supplies, then head back when it dawns,” Chen Ke responded.
They reached the elevator and pressed the button; in the eerie silence, the elevator doors opened with a soft sound, their white lights piercing the dark hallway, montarily dazzling them.
“I think that female doctor is alright. She told us a lot, and I can’t see any malice from her,” Sam said.
The two entered the elevator, and the doors slowly closed.
“Sam, it’s not that she has no malice towards us, but rather she possesses a strong curiosity. If we stayed, it’s highly likely we would end up like those people in the infirmary…” Chen Ke spoke gravely.
“How could that be… Are you saying she’s experinting on people?” Sam asked, astonished. He hadn’t picked up any hints from their conversation with Dr. Jiu Lin.
“I don’t want to speculate so, but she clearly underestimated our alertness. In this world, a female doctor locking people in an infirmary and monitoring them with computers, do you think that’s a way to treat survivors?” Chen Ke explained.
“Maybe she’s just trying to save them?” Sam asked.
“She’s just trying to save herself. She’s using others as materials to research a cure, then heal herself. She said there were many here before, but look around, it’s dead quiet,” Chen Ke said gravely.
Sam pondered and suddenly felt uneasy.
“This world is already finished, Chen Ke. Even if she finds a cure, what good will it do…?” Sam asked.
“We’d have to ask her directly… By the way, did you notice…?” Chen Ke said, then glanced at the elevator floor indicator.
“Notice what?” Sam asked, puzzled.
“We pressed the button, but the elevator hasn’t moved at all,” Chen Ke said.
