To dodge the abandoned vehicles on the street, he swerved onto the sidewalk, smashing wooden benches and tables from street-side restaurants into pieces.
Having driven only 100 ters, he heard a muffled thud on the roof, followed by the vehicle beginning to shake.
Chen Ke knew sothing from above had landed on them; without paying it much attention, he continued to focus on driving.
Sam held his gun, unsure whether to stick his head out of the window to shoot; he didn’t even know what to shoot at.
“Get ready, Sam,” Chen Ke yelled.
“Ready for what? What am I supposed to shoot at?” Sam asked nervously.
Before Chen Ke could answer, Sam found the answer himself, sothing in the sky, attracted by the white van, split off and dove toward them.
That thing had wings as dark as ink and a white, humanoid body, with thousands gliding toward the windshield.
These inhuman, birdlike creatures humd as they flew, reminiscent of the tortured wails of people being tortured.
“Uh-oh…hmm…mm-hmm…”
“Ah-hoho…ohh…”
“Ooh…woo…”
Listening to those sounds made people feel disturbed and anxious, evoking feelings of pity and heart palpitations, as if witnessing soone undergoing cruel torture right before their eyes.
“Mad Fak! What the hell are these things?” Sam, who had never seen such creatures, was terrified and panicked, his hand trembling as he held the gun as if reminded of sothing.
“Treat them like turkeys and shoot! Don’t listen to those sounds!” Chen Ke shouted, turning on the car’s radio.
He hoped the radio’s sound would offer so interference, but only eerie white noise ca through, sounding even more unnerving.
Sam clenched his teeth, tensed up his muscles, mustered his courage, and kicked out the front windshield, extending the M14 out the window and pulling the trigger relentlessly.
Chen Ke noticed that when the bullets hit the creatures, white powder splattered from their bodies, but there was no blood.
“Bang bang bang!”
In the silent night sky, gunshots, wails, and the fluttering of nurous birds mingled together, adding a touch of restlessness to the city.
There were too many of these creatures; they ford a dark column, making them easy targets even without precise aim.
Despite the circumstances, Sam managed to perform as a ranger.
They descended faster than the car, but Chen Ke deliberately swerved to avoid them, causing many avian monsters to crash directly into the ground and die upon impact, with their ghostly heads exploding in a disturbing sound.
One lucky bird creature landed on the roof and thrust its claws into the cabin, grabbing Chen Ke’s collar in an attempt to pull him out.
Its long neck contorted as it brought its face closer, which was similar to a human’s but had no features.
More precisely, it had features covered with a layer of mbrane that had grown over the face.
Chen Ke grabbed the creature’s arm with his right hand, feeling a wax-like texture, and no matter how hard he squeezed, he couldn’t indent it; the limb had no elasticity.
Sam seemingly pulled a large dagger out of nowhere, fiercely stabbing it into the bird creature’s arm and twisting the handle downwards with force, violently detaching the creature’s limb.
Even Chen Ke had to look at Sam with new respect; he was the first person Chen Ke had seen who could detach a monster’s limb with a re dagger.
The cross-section of the creature’s severed limb was white, containing no bones or muscles, resembling only a wax statue, leading Chen Ke to doubt whether this thing was even alive.
Moreover, the wax-like severed arm visibly began to regrow a new limb from the wound.
“I knew it wouldn’t be that simple,” Chen Ke’s expression hardened as he yanked the handbrake and jerked the steering wheel, turning the vehicle violently by 180 degrees. Then, he shifted into third gear and floored the accelerator, driving into a narrow lane.
“Damn… with no windshield, I feel like I’m going to die!” Sam scread.
The van sped along, the wind forcefully gushing into the driver’s seat, causing Sam to squint his eyes shut.
“Don’t be picky,” Chen Ke yelled, using one hand to shield his eyes and the other gripping the steering wheel tightly.
Worried, Sam glanced back and saw the flock of Bird People still following the vehicle. He then scanned the surroundings and unexpectedly spotted a familiar building ahead: a hospital.
“Where are you driving to? We’re back at the hospital!” Sam shouted.
“Do you want to take these freaks to a hotel to collect heads?!” Chen Ke retorted.
Sam had nothing to say. Night had just fallen and the Bird People filled the sky. Driving all night wasn’t feasible, so sneaking into the hospital seed the best option.
The van smashed through the hospital’s iron gates, grinding up the stairs, and sprinted towards the main building’s glass doors.
Sam realized Chen Ke intended to drive into the hospital’s waiting hall, so he grabbed the roof handle tightly, anticipating the impact.
The white van gave its all, leapt up from a flight of stairs, burst through the glass doors, and slid sideways into the lobby, crashing against the reception desk on the first floor.
“Jump! Jump! No ti to wait!” As the van ca to a halt, Chen Ke imdiately yelled.
He hadn’t even buckled his seatbelt and urged Sam to get out quickly. From his side of the window, he saw dozens of Bird People crashing into the lobby too, mangled and broken limbed.
But they would always regenerate, and ti waits for no one.
Chen Ke and Sam, clutching M14 rifles and not forgetting the bag filled with dicines, ran towards the elevator.
The elevator was still operating. The two didn’t even consider which floor to go to, but held their M14 rifles ready, watching those Bird People regrow limbs and slowly rise.
“Hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry!!!” Chen Ke watched the elevator floor indicator anxiously as the numbers climbed slowly from the fifth basent.
The basent?
The elevator doors slowly opened, and the two squeezed in, Chen Ke pounding the button for basent five with his fist.
“Ergh…ugh…mmmm…”
“Aiyo…ow…oh…”
“Ugh… ooh… ooh…”
The Bird People had already regrown their limbs and were swarming towards the elevator. The two kept firing the M14 rifles until the elevator doors finally closed, allowing them to breathe a sigh of relief.
Sam collapsed on the floor, releasing his tension and the fear of the unknown all at once. Sweat poured out from under his skin, drenching his clothes and leaving his face soaked as if washed.
“This is way more thrilling than the Yileke War…” he said, leaning back as he muttered and reloaded his gun.
Unexpectedly, Sam must have used up all his spare ammunition, but he hadn’t discarded the empty magazines, choosing to keep them instead.
Chen Ke couldn’t help but admire Sam’s ntal resilience, especially knowing that these Bird People possessed psychic attack abilities. Even investigators like Parker had to wear headphones to counteract it.
And yet, Sam had managed to keep his wits and fight them. Truly impressive.
“Where are we heading to?” Sam finally noticed the elevator was moving downward and was almost reaching the bottom.
“We’re heading to the basent. Do you want to go up to the 20th floor and stand shoulder to shoulder with those Bird People?” Chen Ke replied.
He activated his Spiritual Vision, trying to scan the underground conditions to gauge his luck and see if they’d encounter a swarm of Maggot People.
Blue pulses radiated from him, and at the elevator doors, Chen Ke spotted a blue human silhouette.
Just one.
Chen Ke raised his M14, ready to fire at close range when the doors opened.
“Ding!”
The fifth basent level arrived, and Chen Ke instantly extended his gun. Just as he was about to pull the trigger, what he saw made his eyes widen in disbelief.
Standing at the elevator doors was not a Maggot Person but a short-haired female nurse in a white uniform.
