Jaehaerys, First of His Na, styled the Conciliator, lived sixty-and-nine years, and sixty of those as King, though for the first five years the Seven Kingdoms were ruled by Maegor the Cruel, who had usurped power, the crown, and Blackfyre. Any man with but a passing knowledge of history would na the Old King's reign wise and just, recalling the roads he built, the code of laws he brought to order (which might more justly be nad the Code not of Jaehaerys, but of Barth), the improvent and growth of King's Landing and other cities of the Seven Kingdoms, and, naturally, the Reconciliation with the Faith.

Yet, a historian more seasoned might say that it was the actions—or, more precisely, the inaction—of the Conciliator that ordained the events of the second century of the Targaryen era. Did Jaehaerys comprehend that by summoning the lords to Harrenhal, he was sowing the wind, the harvest of which would not fall to him to reap? 'Tis hard to say. Did his intimates understand this? Indubitably. So realized that this would lead to war and did all within their power to forestall it. Thus may a single weakness shown by a king cast a shadow over all his great deeds.
