Annie and Emily navigated through the crowded mall, weaving between busy shoppers and colourful displays. Emily was in full rant mode, her voice tinged with exasperation as they passed yet another aisle filled with superhero rchandise. 2

"Seriously, Annie, do we really need to buy everything related to Spider-Man?" Emily asked, her tone half-joking, half-serious as she gestured towards the Spidey-thed party hats, plates, and balloons that Annie was enthusiastically grabbing off the shelves.

Annie grinned, her eyes twinkling with amusent. "Of course we do! It’s a Spider-Man-thed birthday party. This is what Ryan wanted, and we’re going to make sure it’s perfect."

Emily sighed dramatically, rolling her eyes. "You know, we could’ve just stuck a Spider-Man sticker on the cake and called it a day. But nooo, we have to go all out."

Annie laughed, playfully nudging Emily with her elbow. "Co on, where’s your sense of fun? Besides, this is for Ryan. You know how much he loves Spider-Man."

Emily couldn’t help but smile at that. "Yeah, I guess. But do we really need Spider-Man napkins too? I an, is anyone even going to notice?"

"Ryan will," Annie replied with a smirk. "And trust , he’s going to rember every single detail. You don’t want to disappoint a four-year-old superhero, do you?"

Emily threw up her hands in mock defeat. "Alright, alright. But I’m drawing the line at Spider-Man-shaped pasta. There has to be a limit."

Annie chuckled as she tossed the last of the party supplies into their overflowing shopping cart. "Deal. Now, we just need to collect the cake."

As they made their way to the bakery, Emily couldn’t help but marvel at how far they had co. "You know, Annie, it’s hard to believe that Ryan’s already turning four. Ti flies, doesn’t it?"

Annie nodded, her smile softening as she thought about the past few years. "Yeah, it really does. I still rember the day I found out I was pregnant. I was terrified. But then I t you and Heather, and everything changed. I’m so blessed to have you both in my life."

Emily reached over and gave Annie’s hand a reassuring squeeze. "You’re family, Annie. We’re just as blessed to have you and Ryan with us."

They collected the cake, a perfectly crafted Spider-Man masterpiece, and loaded everything into the car and drove back.

The last four years had been wonderful for Annie. When she first discovered she was pregnant, panic had surged through her veins like wildfire. She was alone and carrying a secret that could get her killed. But fate had brought her to Heather and Emily, two won who had beco more than just friends—they were her family now.

Ryan was the light of their lives, a charming little boy with bright eyes and a smile that could lt the coldest of hearts. He had everyone wrapped around his tiny fingers, and Annie couldn’t be more grateful for the joy he brought into their lives. Every day with him was a reminder of how far she’d co since those dark days.

Yet, in the quiet monts, when Ryan was asleep and the house was still, Annie’s thoughts would sotis drift back to Damien. He had been her mate, the one she was destined to be with, but their paths had diverged in ways she never could have anticipated. She often wondered if he thought of her, if he ever missed what they could have had. But she quickly pushed those thoughts aside. He was probably already mated to so high ranking wolf.

Annie had built a life for herself here. Damien was a distant mory, and that was where he would stay.

The birthday party was in full swing, with the sounds of laughter and excited chatter filling the air. Ryan’s kindergarten friends were running around in a frenzy of excitent. The café, lovingly decorated with Spider-Man-thed banners, balloons, and tablecloths, had been turned into a mini superhero headquarters. Heather had graciously offered to host the party in the café, reserving a cosy corner for the kids to enjoy their day.

Annie watched with a smile as Ryan, wearing a Spider-Man mask and costu, chased after his friends with his arms stretched out in front of him as if he were about to shoot webs from his fingertips. His joyful giggles were infectious, and Annie felt her heart swell with love and pride.

"This is chaos," Emily said with a laugh as she sidled up next to Annie, her arms loaded with more Spider-Man-thed plates and napkins. "But the good kind."

"The best kind," Annie agreed, her eyes never leaving Ryan. "I’m so glad he’s having fun."

A man approached them with a wrapped gift in hand. He was tall, with a rugged handsoness that was accentuated by the scruff on his face and the warm smile he wore. Annie recognised him instantly—Lucas, the hunter who supplied the café with fresh at and occasionally helped out with handyman tasks when needed. He had always been kind and polite, and Annie couldn’t deny that he had a certain charm about him.

"Hey there, birthday boy," Lucas said, crouching down to Ryan’s level and handing him the gift. "This is for you."

Ryan’s eyes lit up as he accepted the present, his shyness montarily taking over. "Thank you," he mumbled, clutching the gift tightly.

"You’re welco, little man," Lucas replied with a grin before straightening up and turning his attention to Annie. "And hello to you too, Annie."

"Hi, Lucas," Annie said, returning his smile. "Thanks for the gift. You didn’t have to, but it’s very sweet of you."

"Well, it’s not every day a superhero turns four," Lucas joked, giving Ryan a playful wink before his gaze shifted back to Annie. "But if you really want to thank , you could repay by going on a dinner date with ."

Annie blinked, caught off guard by his sudden proposition. She could feel Emily’s eyes widen in amusent besides her.

"A dinner date?" she echoed, trying to keep her tone light and not let her surprise show too much.
