Chapter 223: Goal (5)
Khal did not magically change, but he did not take the initiative anymore. His way of doing things focused on other things. He would not ignore the civilians, but had stopped exhausting himself to save people, either.
His pure intention at the start had been tainted with something else.
If he were powerful enough, would things change? Being alone would not do. Khal knew that even as an S-class esper, his power alone would not create a greater change.
He needed something bigger.
It was slow. Khal did not take it as a priority.
Khal and Devion then became hailed as SS-class espers, and the small group he created became bigger with him. None of this was known to the outside world.
At the corner of the world, Khal created a weapon for that greater change, lying in wait.
Everything was smooth, even his relationship with Devion. Until it was not.
"Break up? Why?" Khal’s tone was far too calm, but the wave inside his heart was enough to make him lose control.
Yet, he could not. Devion was in front of him, someone who could instantly calm him down.
No matter how a person he had become, he was always the Khal of years ago in front of him.
Devion did not say anything. He only averted his gaze and became firm in his words.
"Let’s end this, Khal."
He thought it was a whim. Devion always had certain instances where he got annoyed with Khal over little things and returned the next day being clingy as always.
However, he was wrong.
Devion disappeared.
Khal did not accept ending things with them, and so, for him, they were still together.
Days passed, and after a few months, there were no sightings of Devion.
Khal snapped.
Things got delayed with their own purpose; instead, Khal used the manpower he had to search for Devion. This sleeping and resting monster began to work for the first time in its creation.
Even Khal was surprised at how mature it had become.
Khal had quietly created a monster under everyone’s nose.
Yet...
"Useless." Khal’s chilling gaze swept everyone. The terrifying mana around him surged forth so that everyone could only collapse on the ground.
It had been a year. His patience was wearing thin.
Khal’s expression twisted; his desire for control slowly crept in and gripped his heart.
"If I see you again..." Khal’s darkened blue pupils flashed ominously. "I’m going to lock you up. You won’t be able to escape from me again."
And he did.
Having seen Devion for almost two years since his disappearance, Khal decisively locked the fleeing Devion from the prying eyes. Strangely, Devion did not actively escape either.
And that was the start of a new nightmare that accompanied them for years to come.
The first time he witnessed it, Khal felt like his world fell apart.
Devion bled, the blood pouring out of his orifices and even his skin. That devastating sight was still the hell that haunted Khal to this day.
"W-What’s happening?" He shouted, but it was almost inaudible, or he just could not hear clearly; even his voice was stuck inside his throat.
Devion’s eyes stared at him unfocused, blood pouring out of the corners of his eyes. Khal tried to wipe away every drop of blood, which was pointless, as it was coming out everywhere.
"Babe, please..." Khal’s voice shook. His whole body was trembling as he embraced Devion, not knowing what to do.
After such a long time, Khal had felt powerless again.
Devion continued to stare at him, blood streaming out of his eyes as though he were crying. Or maybe he was; Khal could not tell.
"Khal," Devion spoke by then, voice hoarse, his own mouth filled with his own blood. "Kill me, please, babe..." Devion gripped Khal’s arm, and he pleaded, "Kill me... please..."
Khal’s heart seemed to stop beating hearing those words coming from his beloved. He could not believe he was hearing such an unreasonable request from the man he loved.
"No..." Khal shook his head, his jaw clenching from suppressing his emotions. His reason was fading. "Don’t say it again. Devion. I don’t want to hear it."
Khal’s mind was hazy and extremely shaken, but he wanted to focus on taking Devion to someone. Devion was losing too much blood.
"You can’t, Khal." Devion sobbed and pressed his hand to Khal’s cheek, wanting him to look at him. "Khal, there’s a voice in my head. Khal. I don’t want to become a monster. Please, kill me, Please... babe, I don’t want to lose control. Please, baby, do it."
Gone was the spark in those pupils, the arrogant grin that once pissed him off, but he grew to love. Khal saw the broken Devion, and it was killing him.
Khal shook his head, tears streaming down his cheeks.
"No, no... No, I... I’ll get a healer and..."
"NO!" Devion shook his head, eyes turning red, just like the color of his blood. "Kill me before I kill you. Khal, I’m crazy."
His whole body began to tremble, suppressing his urge. The mana around Devion became chaotic. Khal felt the pain spreading to his body and clenched his jaw.
"No." This time, his voice became eerily calm, holding his beloved in his arms tightly as Devion began to flail around and escape his hold.
He stared at Devion’s face and the instance of his mana becoming activated.
"It’s fine. It’s going to be fine."
Khal’s voice, laced with false assurance for both of them, rang out.
Devion, trembling, stared at him.
"You’re lying." He said.
Khal leaned and kissed Devion’s bloodied lips and parted with a smile.
"If you want to die," he whispered, "kill me first."
Devion paused; the murky red pupils stared at Khal.
"Are you crazy?" Devion sighed; the pain twisted his expression.
Khal chuckled as he got up, carrying Devion. This time, he did not struggle and lay weakly in his arms.
"I’ve long been insane, angel."
And you made me grounded.
Khal could stay living as a normal person because of one man. The coldness in his heart had yet to overwhelm him because of Devion’s natural heat.
They were opposites, but also perfect for each other.
