Chapter 630: She Found Ogres

The Ogres’ advance ca to a crashing halt when the Trolls stood up and raised their shields.

That stopped the barrage of gunfire, but the counter charge by the Trolls brought progress to a halt even before the massive spiked clubs were swung overhand at the heads of the Ogres.

That was the cue for the Royal Guards to spread out and begin their hit-and-run attacks.

Equipped with long spears, they could make effective strikes into the vulnerable areas of the Ogres, even when the monsters were armoured. In this situation, they might have been able to get away with simply hanging back and continuing to shoot from the sides.

But they had drilled for this formation for years, and the efficiency of practice outweighed any possible advantage that firing from a safe distance would bring.

It was simply better not to do anything that might bring an unexpected result.

Predictability ant control of the battlefield, and when they had the Ogres dancing to their rhythm, they knew that they were going to win smoothly.

Alexis spun the spear in her hand as she charged, and swept the long point across the back of an Ogre’s knee.

Not a conventional way to use the weapon, which was generally a piercing weapon, but the ones that Dominic made had serrated edges and made for brutal slashing weapons as well.

The Ogre collapsed with the knee tendons severed, and Dave smoothly crushed its skull, then kicked it out of the lee so he could fight more without stepping on the corpse.

He didn’t like Ogre blood between his toes.

"General, there are still more Ogres coming out of the hollow." Wilkes called, using her military title in case there was soone controlling the monsters.

Shouting Princess in public while under attack was just begging to be attacked by an even larger group.

"Take four and keep them under control."

The mages caught her eye, silently asking if they should open a portal to grab more soldiers.

"Not yet. Let them wear their numbers out against the riflen."

The mage shrugged, and continued to cast defensive barriers over the trolls, who were the only ones actively being attacked at the mont.

For now, the flow of Ogres was under their control, and the soldiers were relatively fresh, as they hadn’t been forced into a hard lee yet. With the trolls to take the brunt of the attack, the fights were much less physically strenuous for everyone else.

They were largely cavalry manoeuvres, and the chanical horses didn’t get tired.

"We have extras. Goblins along with the Ogres." Wilkes called.

Alexis turned to the mages after her next pass.

"Call the soldiers and the mages. Mages can deal with Goblins easily enough."

Beside Dominic, Amie looked up as a token hung from her bracelet flashed.

"The Princess calls for aid," she whispered.

Dominic nodded as he finished another at pie.

"In that case, we will sneak out to the concession area and join them. If she thinks that she gets to have fun without , she’s got much to learn."

A few of the knights standing near them stood up to join them, so Dominic knew that they hadn’t been discrete enough about their conversation.

He shook his head, but the Knight simply winked at him and followed.

"Don’t worry, we won’t spread anything and cause a panic." He whispered as they got beneath the stands.

"Alright, do you have rifles? You’re likely to need them."

The n all smiled. They were locals, they had kept their rifles from their ti in the Natural Sons’ Regint.

"Indeed, and you made them for us. We’ve also got our armour and blades, and we’ve already had our turns for the day, so we’re not going to miss out on qualifying."

The Shersdonian Knight who had been sitting directly behind Dominic waved for them to get a move on, then raised his voice a bit to inform soone that they had just stepped out to discuss Duchy business for a mont.

That was a perfectly reasonable excuse, and wouldn’t cause any concern, as long as they ca back.

"Alright, I’ll open the portal, you armour up when you’re through. Let’s make this quick." Amie whispered.

Her portal brought them fifty tres behind the battlefield, just enough space for the Knights to get their armour on and ready their rifles.

The contrast was a bit amusing to Dominic, modern weapons with traditional design armour that had been made for a jousting tournant. In fact, only one of them hadn’t included his shield in the equipnt orb. The others all had to remove theirs before they could use their rifles.

Fortunately, they were not alone.

Dozens of mages were already arriving, leading n from the city guard, as well as from both Mage Sects.

Then, more n began to arrive, soldiers from the new Duchy security force that the King had brought, and Dominic had not even begun to get settled, much less dispatched.

They were camped on the edge of the city, and he had intended to deal with it after the tournant, giving them a week to get familiar with the city before they were working full-ti.

Fortunately, the General in charge of them hadn’t let all discipline slip, and there was still a whole group on duty, equipped and ready in case sothing happened.

Then, Jack rlot arrived. The father of General rlot, and new advisor to the Duchy, was wearing his formal armour, carrying a sword and banner for the regint, while leading the soldiers into battle, despite his advanced age and clear intoxication.

Dominic couldn’t bla him for that when he was the one supplying the wine.

"Lads, spread out, spears ready. I see that we’ve got a whole battlefield of Goblin filth to clear out.

Leave the Ogres to Dave and the riflen, they know what they’re doing with that nonsense." The old drunkard bellowed, while the soldiers cheered.

He knew just how to get on their good side.
