My heart broke every ti I thought about the betrayal. I had found out about it a day after the incident of that night. The shadow found out about it like he always did and explained everything to . I had cried in front of the river, near the place where I had placed Dem. I had cried in the dark, because I was tired of everyone pitying , seeing my tears.
I sat down on my chair and breathed heavily. No matter how strong I acted down there, in reality, I was not exactly that person. I had thrown up everything the mont I entered the restroom of my office. I could not keep it back any longer.
But I managed to stay strong to get the plan moving. I could not stop, not when Dem's life was at stake.
"Are you sure this will work?" Perita asked. "I am down for any kind of risk, however, would he not suspect anything?"
They were all leaning over the huge piece of paper spread on my table. I had written so parts of my plan that involved them and explained it to them.
"I just don't want my family involved," Flint said.
"Your family is safe. I have sent people to get them sowhere safe," I said.
"Who?" he asked. This guy cared for his family a lot. I admired that part of him, however, I never thought I would be betrayed because of it. Hell, I never thought this kind of situation would arise in the first place.
"Soone who is trustworthy," I snapped.
Ruby looked mortified. I heard her mumbling to herself, "I don't understand any of it…"
'What a coincidence! I don't understand any of it either.'
After explaining everything, at least the parts that I wanted to explain, I told them to leave, except for Ruby. She truly needed to have a word with , or I feared she might faint.
"Should I stay too?" Perita asked.
"No," I said. "You all go back to your quarters for the night. Tomorrow morning, do as I ordered."
Order was a word I refused to use most of the ti. I did not like feeling superior to others. However, I was. With my power, I was superior. It was just not a humble move. But who cared about being humble now?
"… What is going on, Your Highness?" she asked as soon as they left.
"You have seen everything, Ruby. I have brought you here for that reason," I said. "To see everything."
"Yes, I have seen everything. I have heard everything. But I understand nothing!" she said. "Why? Why now? Why all of this?"
"I should have done it before," I said. "Humble…? Really, it was not sothing that should have ever been in my character. It would have been better if I could partly be like Dem from the beginning. I am tired, Ruby. Tired of hiding, tired of relying on others, and tired of being sothing I am not."
"You are not this either," she murmured, her chocolate eyes focused on my face. I got the uncomfortable idea that she could read .
"No, I am not," I chuckled and flopped down on a chair. It was the sa chair I had been using since my office was built. I would work in this place, and sotis get exhausted, but I would still feel better because I knew I was helping Dem. But now what did I feel?
Just emptiness.
Even if I got the antidote, would he wake up? Would I even find the antidote when the poison could not be traced in the first place?
"Your Highness, is His Highness okay with it?" she asked.
"… He is in sickbed now. Even if he is not, there is no way for him to stop ," I said. "We don't have many mbers in the Royal family who can lead. We don't have a grown son or daughter who can do it. It's just him and I. If not him, I," I said.
"But you are pregnant, Your Highness."
"I still have to step up," I said. "Pregnant or not, the enemies won't stop. I must not let it stop as well. I won't do sothing that will harm my child. Trust , I will win."
At least, that was what I tried to believe. But, would I win? Did I have what it would take to win?
"… I have promised to support you all the ti, Your Highness. I will do the sa now too," she said.
"But you are scared, Ruby," I smiled. "You are scared of ."
She did not say anything, just averted her eyes and looked at her feet. I chuckled and stood up, before walking up to her and hugging her. She used to hug when I was sad. But maybe she did not know I was sad now. I still needed the hug though.
"Don't be afraid of ," I said. "Not you. Where will I go then? I don't know who are on my side, Ruby. I cannot trust."
She hugged back. "You can trust , Your Highness. I won't leave you. I won't ever leave you for anything," she said.
"… Not even for Luc?" I asked. I should not have asked it. I regretted it the mont those words left my lips.
She was silent for a few seconds, then said, "Not even for him."
I pulled back from the hug and she smiled at . "Luc can fend for himself, Your Highness. I would not have had him if you were not there to push from the back. From His Highness's punishnt, you saved . If I can do sothing for you, anything, I would do it without a word. Yes, tonight's events did scare , but I know you.
Your Highness is like a sister to . Why would I keep fearing my sister? That is too foolish, is it not?"
