Chapter 88: Maybe this could work.

Beau.

’’I know everyone is scared. I am scared too.’’

There is nothing wrong with admitting fear. We are all people before leaders. Even though everyone is supposed to look up to . I am supposed to be the Alpha, the leader of this pack but that doesn’t an I am invincible. I have been broken down, bruised. I have given up so many tis. I don’t want anyone to think I am unstoppable.

’’I don’t know what happened while I was away. Hell, I don’t even understand what went wrong but I don’t want to relive those monts. I am not here to put the bla on anyone. Yes, we all made mistakes. We trusted the wrong people but there is no more of that. Fallon is an enemy and anyone that accepts him is my enemy too.’’

I am making my point known. I won’t have anyone thinking that they can just do whatever the fuck they want to do. there is no debating it. No room for forgiving him. He murdered my father and he will pay for it.

The living room is full, everyone is here including the vampires. I am not leaving anyone out of this eting. Even the ogas. The ti of exclusion is over. We are in this together and there is no exception.

’’Fallon killed Rick,’’ Olin speaks up. ’’The only Alpha we know is Beau. Anyone that is against that should speak up now.’’

Olin is one of the semi-trusted ones. He was my fathers’ best friend. At least that makes

know that I can rely on him in these tis. There are murmurs around but no one actually speaks up. Alanis is next to . his presence is comforting to

and giving

all the strength, I need to be brave. At least I need to act brave, maybe from there, I will really beco brave.

There are murmurs and mumbling around but no one actually says anything.

’’I am going to find Cassius and I will kill him.’’ I need them to know that this ti I won’t be waiting for him to co back here again. This has gone on for too fucking long. I can’t take it anymore.

’’How do you intend to do that?’’ one of the older wolves in the pack—Brian asks with worry in his eyes. Frankly, everyone looks worried. A lot of people lost their loved ones yesterday, so I appreciate them for even being here in this eting. It takes strength to stand tall after sothing so terrible.

’’I know where he lives now. He is not as smart as he thinks he is. I will not wait for him anymore. I will find him.’’ I haven’t answered the question but that is all I have right now. I need Jules to co. I need soone as experienced as him to help . I cannot do this on my own.

The eting ends with

giving orders. There is a list of people that will stand guard. We cannot leave the community unguarded and we can’t fully depend on Alanis and his family, even though they have agreed to stay. Eligio is going over to pick up Elu. He wants her with him. I totally get how he is feeling. I can’t even be without Lanis in a ti like this.

He is the only one that is giving

strength.

I walk back to my room and put on a change of clothes. Lanis sits on the bed as he watches . I see the look in his eyes. He is scared, worried that I will break down again. I don’t bla him; he is the strong one. I am just weak, pretending I have my shit together. Jules sent a ssage, he is thirty minutes away.

’’We need to go back and talk to those vampires. The other one is awake now.’’ He informs . it is not like I have forgotten about them but I don’t know what to do with them. The revelation that they did everything to survive hits

to the core. I cannot fault them; I don’t have the power in

to fault them.

’’What can I say to them? The only thing I wanted was vengeance but now I don’t have the heart to hurt them.’’

He nods as I put on a pair of clean shorts. I run my hands through my hair as he walks over to

’’Look, I am not saying we should just go about and forgive them but we could get them on our side. They have as much to lose as we do. Cassius will be nothing without his army. So why not get to the core of that and scatter it?’’

All I know about Cassius is the fact that he has a group of vampires on his side. They will do anything he wants them to and now we know that the majority of them are doing this because he has sohow captured all their links. He is using their one weakness against them. If they agree to work with us, then they beco double agents and they could help us.

That makes sense but how can we be sure that we can trust them?

’’Just talk to them. They are not as evil as you think they are. Be better than them. That will show them that we were never the enemy.’’

I agree to go to the basent where we kept them and Lanis insisted on bringing them food. I know what it is like to be kept hostage. I suffered for two weeks and no one treated

with an ounce of kindness. Alanis grabs two bags of blood as we get to the basent. They both look up as we enter. The burns on their skins are worse than last night. They look a lot worse than when I left them.

’’We are not the ones you should be doing this to.’’ The other one that was unconscious speaks up imdiately. There are tears in his eyes, red circles around but all the bruises from last night have vanished from their super speed healing.

’’What is Cassius’s plan?’’

He wails in pain ’’We don’t know what Cassius is planning. We are just puppets that he controls.’’ I already know this.

I need sothing useful.

’’Why are you helping him?’’

Lanis read the other one’s mind yesterday. Now he is just quiet, almost like he has given up. They both look like they have no soul left in them. No will to fight anymore. I want them to tell

what I already know, show

that they are redeemable.

’’He has everyone at the tip of his fingers. We can’t fight him when we have everything to lose.’’ The one from last night finally speaks up. I look at him—I an really look at him for the first ti. This is not the face of a monster. This is the face of desperation. Now I see things clearly. He is not evil; he is just scared. I reach for the chains, the silver ones and slowly I rip them off him and then I do the sa to the other one. I am not like Cassius. I will never be like him. The reason why I will win this is that I am good.

I will always be good.

He looks at the chains as they fall to the ground. There is shock mixed with confusion on his face as he falls to his knees. He rubs the bruises on his wrists. I reach for both of the blood bags from Lanis and stretch my hand out to give it to them. The devour it imdiately and I watch as the veins around their eyes break out in dark lines around them. Their eyes never wavering away from . I am sure they are still sceptical, unsure if they can actually trust . I can’t trust them; I will never fully believe that they will be on my side but at least I will show them that we don’t have to be enemies. I will try to help them get back what they have lost.

After they are done, I go down on my knee facing both of them ’’I need your help and it looks like you need

too.’’

It is easier said than done. If I am correct, Cassius is keeping their links hostage. He is using that leverage to make them do what he wants. That ans there will always be that fear that if they betrayed him, they would end up losing their loved ones.

There will always be a fear of loss. I fear losing Alanis every single day. I worry that sothing will go wrong.

’’He is very smart. He will know instantly.’’ One of them informs .

They don’t have to tell . I already know ’’I know, but he will never believe that you would betray him. I know what it is like to have a link. He is my link,’’ I point to Alanis and they both look at him with obvious confusion. ’’But I will never let that make

do the things that Cassius is making you do. You have to be able to sleep at night after everything is over.’’

Their eyes dart around but no one says anything ’’What are your nas?’’ I ask.

The one from last night speaks up first ’’Bade.’’ I nod as the other one answers ’’Brone.’’

I smile, at this point. They are free and well-fed, they can try for an escape but deep down, I know they wouldn’t. Deep down I know I can gain their trust.
