Chapter 96:
Are You Serious?
"Hmm, it should be here."
Holding a basket of fruit, Aiden stood in front of the apartnt door, comparing it with the mories he inherited.
In the mories of the previous Aiden, there was the address of the apartnt where his colleague, Rebecca, lived.
There wasn't any particular reason, but it seed that the previous Aiden's team would often celebrate their successful captures of criminals at a nearby tavern.
Several tis, Rebecca would invite her colleagues to her rented apartnt for tea and sobering up, and they would often chat until late at night before dispersing.
At least, based on the fragnts of mories inherited by Aiden, he could sense that the forr occupant of this body had a deep bond with his colleagues, including Rebecca. After all, they had repeatedly faced life and death situations together, entrusting their backs to each other in tis of danger.
However, the current Aiden, although retaining mories of his interactions with his forr colleagues, did not inherit those feelings.
Shortly after inheriting this body, he was transferred to work in a prison and only had a few encounters with Rebecca. This girl didn't leave much of an impression on him.
Nevertheless, since he had promised Director Harold, he still felt it necessary to fulfill his commitnt.
He raised his hand and lightly knocked on the door.
After a while, no one ca to open it, so Aiden knocked a bit harder, ....another Silence followed.
Just as Aiden began to suspect if the person was not at ho, the door lock suddenly made a sound.
Then, the door cracked open slightly, revealing half of Rebecca's face on the other side, cautiously sizing up the visitor.
This unusual reaction didn't startle Aiden, as he had already been inford about Rebecca's amnesia beforehand.
He greeted her directly, "Good morning, Rebecca. I've already heard about your condition from Director Harold. Do you rember ? I am..."
"Aiden Garrett?" Rebecca's eyes widened slightly.
"You rember , that's great." Aiden smiled sincerely.
He was genuinely happy that Rebecca could recognize him. After all, if she had no recollection of him, it would be quite troubleso to explain their relationship and gain her trust as an amnesiac. Moreover, Aiden was not the original owner of this body but had only inherited the mories.
However, he could still sense the slight awkwardness when Rebecca called him by his full na.
"Please co in and have a seat. I just brewed so coffee." Rebecca welcod him into the house.
It seed that Rebecca have lowered her guard and opened the door. She looked apologetic as she said to Aiden, "I'm sorry, right now I only vaguely rember your face and na..." She looked at Aiden with unease and asked tentatively, "We used to work in the sa departnt, right?"
"We were part of the sa task force. I was the team leader, later i transferred. And You helped organize the farewell banquet for ." Aiden explained to her. "It seems like you have no recollection at all."
"I'm really sorry." Rebecca lowered her eyes with a face full of apology. Her eyes showed signs of fatigue, indicating that she had experienced nurous visits where she couldn't recall mories of the person in front of her.
"I'm not blaming you." Aiden quickly waved his hand. "Don't force yourself."
He was not uncomfortable with Rebecca's attitude... After all, as soone who had only inherited this body, he wasn't familiar with her to begin with.
"Please co in and have a seat. I just brewed so coffee." Rebecca invited him into the apartnt.
The cramped apartnt didn't have a separate living room for receiving guests. Aiden placed the fruit on the table and sat directly at the dining table while Rebecca poured him a cup of coffee by the stove.
"Would you like anything added?" Rebecca asked.
"So fresh milk and two sugar cubes, please," Aiden replied.
The amnesiac Rebecca was clearly not accustod to the arrangent of her own kitchen and seed a bit flustered.
It took her quite a while to find the jar of sugar cubes in the cabinet, and this delay seed to make her nervous. As she scooped the sugar cubes with a spoon, her hand trembled and two sugar cubes fell to the floor.
She hurriedly placed the spoon on the edge of the coffee cup, intending to deal with the fallen sugar cubes. Inadvertently, her fingers touched the overly filled coffee cup and she let out a startled cry from the burn.
"Don't worry so much, I'll do it myself."
Watching as Rebecca rinsed her right hand, scalded by hot water, Aidan felt a twinge of guilt and stood up.
"It's fine, really! Just stay seated!" Rebecca waved her hands repeatedly.
She picked up the coffee with sugar for Aiden again, this ti with slightly smoother movents. Holding the coffee cup, she casually stirred it with a spoon, then turned around, forcing herself to appear calm as she held the cup across the dining table, offering it to Aiden. "Please, go ahead."
"I forgot about the saucer..." Aiden thought to himself.
But he didn't want to ruin the atmosphere by pointing it out, so he reached out with both hands, carefully touching the rim of the cup with one hand and grasping the handle held by Rebecca with the other, accidentally brushing against her scalded finger.
Aiden didn't think much of it at first, but Rebecca's expression visibly tensed for a mont, making Aidan also take notice.
Rebecca was clearly still adjusting to the presence of a man who seed sowhat familiar but whose relationship she couldn't rember.
"It's seems quite inconvenient losing a mory," Aiden brought up the topic proactively, showing understanding.
"Yeah, it takes so ti to rember where I put things that I don't use often. It's not a big deal, but it can be quite troubleso," Rebecca sighed wryly.
"Going back to work like this would probably be difficult, right?"
"Yeah, my mories of work... basically only the things that happened when I caught Priscilla." Rebecca sighed. "Now I'm not even proficient with a gun anymore. If I were to go back as a judge, I'm afraid I wouldn't have the ability to accompany them."
"Mm, I understand."
Those were Aiden's sincere words. There was probably no one in this world who understood Rebecca's feeling better than him.
"I originally wanted to apply for a transfer to another departnt, but the director has been trying to persuade
to stay, saying that I can continue to take paid leave until I recover." Rebecca's expression showed so helplessness. "And he even angrily told
that I'm stupid for wanting to go to that kind of departnt..."
"What departnt did you apply to?" Aiden asked as he casually brought the coffee to his lips.
After he left, the Inquisition Bureau had beco even more short of personnel, so Director Harold probably wouldn't easily let anyone go.
"The Rose Prison."
Aiden choked As soon as he took a sip of the coffee.
"What's wrong?" Rebecca was startled.
"You..." Aiden coughed for a while before recovering. "Are you serious?"
