Chapter 261:
Chapter 261: Not Your Concern
Rose Iron Prison, Cafeteria.
After the interrogation of the Agent concluded, Aiden and Kyle sat down for a late dinner.
"This cafeteria of yours is quite interesting. Who'd have thought of cooking with blood?" Kyle scraped the plate of stir-fried pig's blood clean with his spoon and let out a satisfied burp. "All I can say is, bravo!"
"Your sister isn't the only blood-kin incarcerated here. Every day when we procure at from the slaughterhouse, we also get so fresh blood. Since it can't be stored long-term, the excess is used for cooking. We actually have blood sausage too," Aiden, sitting opposite him, replied calmly.
"That's great. For blood-kin like , the biggest daily worry is finding food. If all restaurants were like this, we wouldn't always have to seek out farms and slaughterhouses," Kyle shook his head, sighing. "People only rember that animal organs and blood are edible during tis of poverty or war."
"That's true," Aiden agreed. Blood-kin subsisted almost entirely on blood. Although The Covenant stipulated registered blood-kin could purchase blood through official channels, such channels weren't available everywhere. Sotis, rule-abiding blood-kin faced more difficulty finding food than those who recklessly attacked humans. Even a high-lineage blood-kin like Kyle encountered nurous inconveniences in modern society. Rules weren't always perfect enough to ensure fairness for everyone.
"Anything to drink?" Kyle asked suddenly after finishing his al.
"Tea? Or blood?" Aiden asked.
"Water is fine... Sigh!" Kyle suddenly let out an unprompted sigh.
"What's wrong?" Aiden asked, passing him the water pitcher.
"Just rembered a joke I don't particularly like, about vampires using won's used sanitary products to make tea," Kyle said with a bitter smile.
Aiden had heard this joke in his previous life; similar jokes existed in this world too. But for the actual blood-kin living in this world, the joke probably wasn't very funny.
"Although today had so unexpected turns, resolving it so quickly is ultimately a good thing. Just letting your friend off easy," Kyle poured himself so water.
"Not necessarily," Aiden realized he ant Abigail. "She still owes
a favor." The matter of the God of Death's Agent was resolved by them before Abigail needed to step in, leaving no opportunity for her. But conversely, the favor Abigail owed him... remained unpaid.
"Then, regarding today's events, wouldn't you say you owe
a favor?" Kyle grinned.
"We dealt with a common enemy together. Why should I owe you a favor?" Aiden chuckled back. "Although your sacrifice was greater... didn't I arrange for you and your sister to et tomorrow?"
"Working with you like this never yields any advantage," Kyle sighed again, but his expression quickly changed back to a smile. "Speaking of which, there's sothing I wanted to discuss with you. It's been so long since I saw my foolish sister, I want to pull a little sothing on her..."
"aning?" Aiden didn't understand.
Kyle lowered his voice and explained his plan to Aiden.
"...So?" Kyle sought his opinion after finishing.
"Up to you, as long as you've thought through the consequences," Aiden gave a serious reply. "Just don't co crying to
if she cuts off ties afterward."
"No problem. I slaved away for the Progenitor for twenty years on her behalf. Playing a little joke on her shouldn't be too excessive, right?" Kyle's face read 'I don't care'.
"How does it feel working for the Progenitor? Or perhaps I should ask... what are your own thoughts?" Aiden asked casually.
"I don't mind. The Progenitor is actually a decent boss, relatively speaking. As long as you complete the tasks he assigns, he doesn't interfere much with us. Since I've beco blood-kin, I can only live like this. I never had any grand life ambitions anyway, just taking it one day at a ti. Working for the Progenitor, ultimately, is just picking a side within the blood-kin," Kyle leaned back in his chair.
"You're quite nonchalant about it," Aiden comnted.
"Speaking of which, Warden, you've basically picked a side now too," Kyle said cheerfully. "Arresting the God of Death's hound, cooperating with soone from the Progenitor's faction... From now on, you should be considered an ally of our Progenitor Faction."
"This ti, the Blood Moon Cult ca looking for trouble themselves. This stance... I didn't really have a choice," Aiden replied calmly. "Honestly, I personally dislike getting involved in these kinds of things."
"But you've had connections with the Blood Moon Cult since before, haven't you?" Kyle asked, sowhat curious about the topic Aiden brought up during the interrogation. "Who exactly is this 'Mr. Bloodcloth' you ntioned to the Agent?"
"Just a fugitive from the past. Tried to assassinate
once. I've always wanted to bring him to justice," Aiden replied concisely. "As I said before, this Blood Moon Cult is no longer the sa organization as the Death God Faction's Blood Moon Cult. It's not your concern."
Kyle stared at Aiden for a long mont, then nodded in agreent. "That's true."
Kyle picked up his cup and took a sip of water, recalling the voice he heard in his mind while sitting in the coffee shop earlier. He had lied to Aiden about one thing: he hadn't rushed over after hearing gunshots. At that ti, he wasn't on the road but had already arrived early at the designated eting spot, sitting deep inside the coffee shop, unaware of the commotion outside. What truly made him rush to the prison was a woman's voice suddenly appearing in his mind, ordering him to go to Rose Iron Prison imdiately. Simultaneously with the voice, he felt a sharp pain as if his heart was being squeezed—he instantly understood the Progenitor was using the blood pact to remind him to obey this command.
It was because of that voice that he could appear at the right ti to help Aiden Galord defeat the God of Death's Agent. Kyle knew very well that wasn't sothing the Progenitor could do. Soone else must have relayed the command through the Progenitor to him, the Progenitor's Agent. Soone high above, surpassing the Progenitor... perhaps even the God of Death, had secretly lent them a hand... No, more accurately, had lent Aiden Galord a hand.
However, it seed the man before him hadn't noticed yet.
Kyle tactfully remained silent on this matter—because it truly wasn't his concern.
