The sun was beating down as Zane hauled the mountain of bags behind Sera, who seed completely unfazed. Two bags balanced awkwardly on his right shoulder, two clenched tight in his hands, and the last one precariously held between his teeth.
Every step felt like a battle against gravity—and dignity.
Boys along the path caught sight of him and exchanged approving nods. So gave subtle thumbs-ups, a silent acknowledgnt of the unofficial "carrier of the queen." Zane grunted, more from exhaustion than pride.
"Alright, Sera," he muttered through clenched teeth, "you owe big ti."
Sera glanced back with a teasing smile, light on her feet like she was walking on air. "Consider it my tribute for your loyalty."
Finally, after what felt like an endless trek through winding academy grounds and dense groves, they erged in front of the gigantic airship.
The colossal vessel towered over them, its gleaming hull a patchwork of polished tal and intricate gears, steam puffing softly from its engines. The air thrumd with anticipation, filled with the chatter of students, the clinking of armor, and the creak of ropes.
Zane set the last bag down with a sigh that turned into a proud smile. "Well, at least this journey's over."
Sera tilted her head, eyes sparkling. "And the real adventure begins."
Behind them, the crowd of students gathered, whispers floating about who would prove their worth on the exchange.
Zane tightened his grip on the Endblade's hilt beneath his cloak. "Let's show them what we are made of."
