The dull scent of herbs and faint hum of arcane wards filled the air. He lay in the infirmary, wrapped in bandages and bathed in soft candlelight. The windows were dim, suggesting it was either early morning or deep into the night.
He tried to sit up—and winced. His body ached in places he didn't know could ache. Muscles scread. Ribs protested. But he was alive.
His gaze shifted to the right.
Sera sat in a chair beside his bed, hunched forward with her head resting on the mattress. Strands of her soft hair spilled across the blanket. Her face was streaked with dried tears. Her hand gripped his, tightly, as if afraid letting go would make him disappear.
Zane stared at her in silence for a mont.
He thought of the battle. The Phoenix. The darkness. The throne.
She stayed.
Gently, he loosened his hand, careful not to wake her. Then he looked forward and whispered:

A sharp chi responded, and a transparent interface blood before him in the air, its glow gentle but imposing.
