Dinner ended on a peaceful note, Abrielle led her parents to their room while Cedric handled Callista and Lucian. Abrielle was genuinely curious why the lead couple had visited the castle uninvited

"Have a lovely night," she wished her parents at their door before giving each of them a short hug. She has to act as affectionate as she can since the Nightshade family was rather an affectionate one

It was rare to find such a family in this setting. "We will. Take care of yourself." Pierre replied.

After wishing her family a goodnight Abrielle made her way back to her quarters. She was glad that she survived day one.

Later that night, in a brightly lit study past midnight, there was a knock at the door. Cedric’s hand writing on a book halted, hearing the knocking sound. He was certain it wasn’t Abrielle because she would not knock.

The person didn’t say who he or she was. Curious the prince left his work on his desk and walked towards the table. He could not sense who it was behind the door due to the camouflaged scent covered with Abrielle’s.

Paying keen attention to the sounds, he was sure it was a human and not so supernatural being. The door clicked open, making a gentle creaking sound against the floor.

His eyes then fell on a particular ginger hair but it wasn’t his little ginger. An older woman with similar ginger packed into a bun, unlike Abrielle, who loved letting her hair cascade down her waistline.

Cedric had changed from his earlier outfit and was wearing sothing very simple, a black shirt paired with black trousers while his hair was packed into a bun to prevent it from inconveniencing him while he worked.

Rebecca was initially stunned by the height difference. She took a step back so as not to feel too intimidated by his height and presence. Even in simple clothes, he didn’t look less regal. "Even when you work late you have that mask on." She comnted, staring at his face that was half-covered with a mask.

"Are you scared your daughter is married to an actual monster that hides behind a mask?" He taunted, Rebecca’s face twisted at his words.

"Abrielle is indeed married to a monster. I know what happens in the court." She retorted at Cedric. She was trying her best to hold her ground against him and not fret under the pressure of his terrifying presence.

Cedric smiled at her, he had a rather high tolerance lately. He learns it from dealing with a wife who wants him dead and tries every ans to get on his nerves. "What do I owe this visit to, duchess Rebecca?" He went straight to the point rather impatient. He wasn’t fond of Abrielle’s mother, Rebecca struck him as soone filled with lies and ga.

Looking at her, he saw Eleanor. At least he knew where Abrielle took her attitude and personality from.

.

"Won’t you welco inside?" Rebecca said instead. Cedric sighed and then made way for her to step in. She didn’t waste a second and gracefully made her way inside walking past Cedric.

Rebecca made herself at ho and took a seat before Cedric even offered. The prince closed the door and then approached the duchess, whose eyes were darting all over the room.

"You won’t find any severe heads here. I don’t keep my victims here." He taunted her, comnting on her behaviour.

Rebecca gave him a wary smile before she cleared her throat. "I guess you have an idea why I am here." She said confidently. Cedric stopped at his desk leaning against it with his arms crossed and his eyes zeroed on Rebecca.

"I have no idea. I am not a mind reader to know what you are thinking." He sneered at Rebecca. He wasn’t the stereotypical son-in-law. Honestly, he didn’t care about their approval or not; there was nothing they could do to separate him and Abrielle since they were already married.

They also have no choice but to support him for their daughter’s good. "How oblivious of you not to have an idea?" She scoffed at him.

"You left Vesper without a word and were yet to explain anything about Abrielle’s miscarriage. Only for to hear rumours on my way here that Abrielle has a suspected affair with Alfonso and my daughter was attacked in the palace." Rebecca snorted, her face twisted in disgust.

Cedric glanced at the bottle of gin on his desk then poured himself a glass. He twirled it lightly before bringing it to his lips. He nonchalantly took a sip, taking his ti to sip his drink. He was indeed surprised that the rumours had spread fast.

A smile graced his lips, soone was deliberately spreading it. He normally didn’t care about rumours related to him but this one was annoying. Rebecca patiently waited for him, she had prepared how she was going to have a talk with him to get to the bottom of everything.

Now she was facing Cedric face to face all her courage disappeared. She wondered how Abrielle was able to stand such a presence.

He brought down the cup, "I am glad you are well-inford. What do you want from an explanation? When I think about it the one being accused of infidelity is Abrielle and not ." Cedric scoffed at her. He was getting sick of Rebecca’s gaze, who saw him as a heinous monster.

"And yes, if you want an explanation why I left abruptly, it was because your dear daughter was getting too comfortable with my brother who I obviously don’t have a good relationship with." He added, his cold eyes when ticking Rebecca off. Her jaw clenched.

"No matter what you say you are the problem here. Abrielle is the one whose health is declining and not you." Rebecca was never going to see a fault in Abrielle.

"That is true; since we are talking about Abrielle, sothing about her has been bothering lately. How is it possible that she was born without any magic?" Cedric changed the topic and Rebecca’s face went pale. She was scared he knew sothing.
