The Villainess Redeems Herself, The Beast Husbands are in a Daily Love Battle Chapter 45: Malicious Heart
The unease wasn’t from the danger itself, but from her.
He suddenly realized his perception of her was outdated.
She was no longer the weakling who needed protection.
He looked down at the person curled up in his arms, inexplicably reaching out to pull her in for comfort.
However, he was never good at expressing himself, and even words of comfort ca out stiff and formal.
He wanted to say, "You did well."
But what ca out was the formulaic, "I’m sorry you were startled."
At this mont, the patrol team arrived.
Three mbers fully ard, marching neatly through the alley entrance.
They wielded long rifles, with tactical vests marked with caution numbers, and carried electric batons and communicators at their waists.
The leading mber quickly scanned the scene.
After confirming safety, he imdiately saluted Caleb Shaw with a perfect military gesture.
"Commander!"
One of them quickly checked the vital signs of the fallen Beastman.
The other two stood guard with their guns, to prevent any accomplices from lurking around.
Caleb nodded.
"That person isn’t from the Wolf Clan, likely disguised Insectoids. My shot wasn’t fatal, stay alert."
"Yes!"
The team mbers responded in unison.
Two of them took out restraints, handcuffing the Beastman’s hands behind his back.
Then they roughly dragged him up from the ground.
His left shoulder was bleeding profusely, but under the team mbers’ restraint, he couldn’t resist.
The two patrol team mbers lifted the fallen Beastman and directly pushed him into the patrol car.
The car door slamd shut, police lights flashing, the engine started.
The vehicle quickly left the scene.
Leaving only a pool of drying blood and a few bullet casings on the ground.
It was then that Selene Kane finally composed herself.
She pushed Caleb Shaw away, stood upright, and wiped her hands on the hem of her clothes, trying to hide the slight trembling of her fingertips.
She lifted her face, forcing herself to display a calm expression, struggling to keep her tone steady: "Such a trivial matter isn’t worth ntioning."
Her voice wasn’t loud, but clear enough, each word deliberately slowed, like she was proving she wasn’t scared.
She wobbled as she got out of the car, her feet just touched the ground, and her legs gave way, causing her to kneel directly on the ground.
Her knees hit the ground sending a dull pain, and she instinctively bit her lip to stop herself from crying out.
All surrounding eyes gathered instantly, making her feel a wave of embarrassnt.
How humiliating.
She originally planned ticulously, to get out of the car calmly, stand stably, and then walk forward casually.
But her body simply didn’t cooperate, her legs felt drained of strength, unable to hold her up.
She tried to adjust her breathing, but her heart was still racing, fingers slightly trembling.
In peaceti, she’d never experienced such a scene?
The gunshot earlier exploded right by her ear, the bullet brushing past, the heat grazing her face.
She could even feel the air’s vibration at that mont.
If hit, how painful would it be!
Broken bones, bleeding, fainting, might even lead to death directly.
This thought chilled her spine.
Selene Kane felt terribly aggrieved, yelling furiously in her mind:
"System! Can we switch to a life-saving system? I don’t want to face life and death situations anymore! Next ti sothing happens, I’m definitely running first! Don’t make charge again! I really don’t want to die!"
"Only the rebate system is currently available."
Selene’s eyes lit up.
"I’ll take that! Activate the rebate system now! What can be rebated? Weapons? Armor? Or a jetboard for escape?"
Her tone carried a hint of anticipation.
"Sorry, the system does not currently support switching."
The voice remained icy, with no room for negotiation.
"Then why ntion it? You’re wasting my feelings. I can’t dodge bullets with rebates."
She muttered under her breath, looking down at her still slightly trembling hands.
Caleb Shaw couldn’t hear her inner thoughts.
He only saw the female stagger and fall, her expressions varied wildly between frowning and grimacing, seemingly shocked beyond words.
Her gaze appeared unfocused, breathing sowhat unstable.
He frowned slightly, sensing sothing was off with her condition.
He approached, holding her arm, feeling the contours of bones beneath his palm.
A gentle pull felt like she weighed nothing.
Her body offered almost no resistance, entirely relying on external force to rise.
His hand unconsciously squeezed her soft, underdeveloped arm.
Under the skin, the bones were distinctly visible, this female was too thin.
Malnutrition, or long-term lack of exercise?
In such an environnt, such a physique was too dangerous.
"Female Master, if you’re uncomfortable, let’s head back first."
His voice was deep, tinged with hesitation.
Though the mission wasn’t over, if she really couldn’t hold on, leaving early wasn’t out of the question.
Selene Kane used his support to stand, finding her footing before instinctively brushing away non-existent dust from her pants.
She took a deep breath, suppressing the panic in her heart.
"It’s okay, there’s still work today. Since the bad guy’s caught, there’s no rush. Let’s continue."
Her voice aid for steady, unwilling to let him see her weakness.
She turned, looking straight at him, eyes firm.
"You have many enemies, I’m never going out with you again. Next ti for such matters, handle it yourself. I’m not involved."
Caleb Shaw: ...
He paused in silence, diverting his gaze from her face.
Having many enemies wasn’t just his issue, it was a result of the situation.
Besides, it’s not like he forcefully dragged her along, it was mission necessity requiring her presence.
She had the choice to refuse.
"Alright, noted."
He responded with indifference, offering neither explanation nor argunt.
He knew words were futile now.
The chaos earlier rose and fell swiftly, less than ten seconds post-gunfire, the security personnel had controlled the situation.
The crowd barely had ti to panic, though so turned and fled at once, most remained in place.
They stood at a safe distance, craning their necks to watch.
All eyes were on Caleb Shaw with excitent, their devices were capturing continuously.
Flashlights popped on, recording functions activating automatically.
Live stream data on social platforms began to skyrocket.
Soft murmurs, excited discussions, all centered on him.
"Wow! Did you see that? The Commander is so impressive, just standing there makes one feel secure."
"Those damn Insectoids trying an assassination again? Is border security just for show? How did dangerous elents get through?"
"I don’t care, I’ve decided to be a fan of the Commander forever! As long as he’s safe, I can watch the surveillance footage ten tis a day."
Sharp-eyed observers began to notice Selene Kane.
"Who’s that female? Why is she so close to the Commander? What’s their relationship? Could it really be her?"
"Didn’t they say she was ugly and an? I even checked the rumors, but the photos didn’t match. I find her quite pleasant, her presence calm, they actually look good together."
The Beastn chattered continuously, gossip in full swing.
Turns out even these rugged guys loved to gossip.
Soone lowered their head to save the video they just fild but quickly deleted it fearing the patrol team’s detection.
The patrol team, with stern expressions, began checking the devices of the onlookers.
"Please refrain from uploading to StarNet, or face consequences. This is a top-level security directive, offenders will be held accountable."
