Mauve stood outside with Jael as the physician and midwife arrived. She didn’t have to do this, and Jael had tried to stop her, but she wasn’t having it. When he saw he couldn’t convince her otherwise, he decided to join her to receive their guests.
They stood at the top of the stairs as the carriage slowly pulled up. The carriage rider was a vampire. Mauve recognized him, but she didn’t really know his na. As the carriage stopped, she took a step forward, and Jael followed her until they both got to the bottom of the stairs.
The door opened, and a young woman stepped out first. She wasn’t too young but younger than Mauve had expected for a midwife. The woman looked dazed and scared, and her eyes scanned the area before her gaze settled on Mauve, then lowered to her stomach. The physician stepped out next. He was visibly older, with white hair scattered across his head and stubble. He was also short and held a briefcase.
The man bowed while the woman curtsied, but neither of them took a step away from the carriage. Mauve couldn’t bla them. Not only were they in the vampire regions, but they were also in the Primus’s residence. It was bound to be scary.
She took a step forward, her hands wide open, and her growing stomach was in full view. Jael took a step with her, and she watched the midwife and physician visibly step back. She glanced at Jael, and he frowned, but he reluctantly nodded. She smiled and walked toward the carriage alone this ti.
"Welco," she said. "You’ll have to forgive , but I didn’t ask my brother for your nas beforehand. If you don’t mind?"
"O-of course, Princess. We don’t. I am Madeline, the midwife, and this is Ferguson, the physician."
"Thank you, Madeline and Ferguson, for making the journey here. I am sure it was quite hectic. Please co with ."
"Okay, Your Ladyship," they both said but then let out a fearful gasp.
Mauve slowly turned around to see that Jael had joined them. She sighed but didn’t say anything. Instead, she slipped her hand through his and turned to the guests.
"This is my husband and the Primus, or as so would call him, the Vampire King. But please, while you are here, do refer to him as the Primus."
Mauve paused, watching them nod rapidly to what she had just said.
"Jael," she softly called. "These are Madeline and Ferguson."
"Welco to the vampire regions," Jael said.
Mauve watched them literally freeze at Jael’s words, both looking at their feet. They were clearly scared, but unfortunately, this was the only way to go about it. They didn’t have a lot of ti and needed them to be familiar with vampires as soon as possible.
"Thank you, Y-Your Majesty," they both said with shaky voices.
Mauve simply nodded. "Please co, let’s get you both inside. Don’t worry, the servants will take your items to your rooms."
Mauve led the way and would occasionally look back, even though Jael held onto her hand, to make sure they were still behind her. Madeline looked like she would flee at any mont, even though she was responding more than Ferguson was.
They got into the castle, and Mauve turned to face them. "The servants will lead you to your rooms. Please unwind for the anti, and I would absolutely be delighted if you could join us for the last al of the day. It’s in no less than an hour."
Madeline shook her head vigorously. "You will have to forgive , Princess, but the journey here was especially hectic, and all I want to do is get so sleep."
"The s-sa for ," Ferguson replied.
"That’s okay," Mauve responded. "You can join us for the first al. It might take a while for your schedule to adjust to vampire ti, but in the anti, do join us for als when you can. Also, if you need anything, just ask the servants, and they will be sure to attend to your needs."
"T-thank you, Princess, and Y-Your Majesty," Madeline replied.
"Thank you, Your Majesties," Ferguson said.
Mauve smiled and watched as the servants led them away. She watched until she could no longer see them before Jael and she went up the stairs to his room. He held the door open to let her in.
"Why, thank you," she teased.
Jael lightly shook his head, but there was a smile on his lips. He closed the door behind him and quickly took Mauve’s hand again, leading her to the bed.
"You know I can walk by myself, right?" she asked with a chuckle.
"Of course, but why would I let you do that?"
"Okay," she said and sat on the bed while Jael made sure she was comfortable. "Thank you."
"You don’t have to thank ," he replied and joined her in bed.
"I like to think that went well," Mauve suddenly said.
"Right?" she asked.
Jael raised a brow. "Yes, don’t worry so much."
She wanted to say she wasn’t worried, but she knew that would be a lie. "I can’t help it. Vampires need us in the fight against Palers, and I worry that we might not get the very much-needed help."
Jael moved closer to her and pulled her so she rested her head against him. "That has nothing to do with you. It’s our fault if we can’t convince humans to trust us, and it wouldn’t have been so hard if we had just done what was right in the first place. Besides, I truly think things will get better. It will just take so ti."
Jael didn’t care much for humans—other than the blood they provided and the fact that they were the only species who could use magic. Jael didn’t think there was much use for them. However, his mate was a human, and it would be hypocritical not to think of them in a better light. Mauve wouldn’t like that. There was also the fact that his child would be half-human, half-vampire. Knowing her, she would want their child to be actively part of both worlds.
