"Where was Louis?" Jael asked darkly.

Mauve felt her throat dry. She turned to look at Jael, panic covering her features as she frantically tried to explain herself. "It was my fault. I said I wanted to stay long—"

"You're not answering my question," he said and lightly touched her face. "And I hate seeing you so scared. I am not scolding you, I was simply asking."

Mauve nodded, tears staining her lashes. The matter was getting more out of hand. Jael's gaze further darkened as he slt her tears. He opened the door to her room and led her inside. He guided her to the bed and sat down.

"What happened?" he asked when she was comfortably seated. Mauve was trying her very best to hide how she truly felt about the matter, but Jael had heard so of the conversations between Lord Garth and his daughter. He had a vague idea of what had happened.

"I told you, I bumped into Lord Garth. It was my fault. I was distracted with my thoughts."

"And what happened to Louis?" he asked.

"I don't know. He didn't look like he was getting much rest. He had bags under his eyes and didn't look like he had fed in a while, so I told him to get so rest."

Jael had equally noticed this, but what went on with Louis was none of his business, and he had not cared to ask. He still didn't care to know. Right now, dealing with the miscreant who thought it was right to try and hit his mate was more important.

Jael had not retaliated for two reasons. The first and only important one was because of Mauve. He could clearly see the bright smile she wore and how she didn't want the issue to get out of hand.

He could clearly hear the loud beating of her heart, but she had smiled at him and apologized to Lord Garth, even though the Lord had tried to hit her. To say he was fuming was an understatent.

The second reason was he didn't want to embarrass the Lord, but that was unimportant. He would have easily overridden this reason if Mauve had acted any other way.

"I see," he said and forced himself to smile. He saw the relaxed look on her face.

"Don't worry," she said. "I will stay in my room until the second al. You can co and get then."

He kissed the top of her head, hearing the knock on the door.

"That should be Yasmin."

"Yes," he said and pulled away.

"I will be in my study."

Mauve nodded and waved him off. Jael pulled the door open, and Yasmin almost fainted. Her face paled, and she quickly curtsied, moving out of the way.

Jael didn't say anything to her and just walked past. "You! Co here," he gestured to the guard.

The guard's expression grew ashen, but he could only nod and followed behind Jael, who walked to his study.

"You saw what happened, did you not?" he asked as soon as the door of his study shut without looking back at the guard.

"I-I did, Sire."

Jael sat in his seat. "Well then, go on. Leave no detail out."

The guard looked like he was about to piss himself, but he swallowed and started to speak. He stamred and shook through most of it, but he managed to tell Jael as best as he could, sparing no detail.

"Get Lord Garth!" he said after the guard was done speaking.

The guard bowed and fled, happy to leave the room. He could see how angry the Primus was. He knew if he stayed any longer than he needed to, the chance of losing his life would be very high.

Lord Garth was displeased by this. He knew exactly what the Primus wanted his presence for. He had seen the Primus only monts ago; if there had been anything on his mind, he would have ntioned it while he had been in his study. But Garth couldn't refuse the request, so even though he thought the idea ridiculous, he gathered himself and made his way to the study, where he stood with his hand on the door. He didn't even get to knock before Jael spoke.

"Co in."

The door slowly pushed open, and the Lord walked closer. "Have a seat."

Jael's expression gave nothing away, but with the way the air charged, threatening to start a fire at the slightest spark, Lord Garth had an inkling about what type of mood the Primus was in. But though he was nervous, he put up a nonchalant air and sat down.

"Sire," he said casually, "we only saw each other monts ago. What could be so important that you'd call back so quickly, not even giving ti to unwind after the incident?" There was no way the Primus would call him for that matter when it was clear who was at fault.

Jael's gaze darkened. He heard Lord Garth's hidden aning loud and clear. "Lord Garth," Jael gently called, putting a lid on his anger.

"Yes, Sire."

"Have I not been lenient enough?" Jael asked.

"Whatever do you an, Sire? But yes, Your Majesty has been nothing but benevolent."

"Now tell —what is this tale I hear?"

"What tale, Sire?"

"That had your daughter not co between you and my mate, you would have struck her."

"Preposterous!" Lord Garth spat out. "I have my grievances, but I wouldn't dare lay hands on what belongs to the Primus, let alone maliciously."

"Do you say my sources lie?" Jael asked, watching the Lord closely.

"Yes!" he said confidently.

Jael smiled. "Lord Garth, I won't be lenient a third ti. I have given you more than enough ti to co to terms with this. I wouldn't have been this understanding had it been anyone else. Should a similar matter arise, I would assu it is most appropriate to take the right actions."

Lord Garth grabbed the arms of the chair. "Is the Sire berating for a human? A human that bumped into ."

"It was an honest mistake, and she apologized after. However, you didn't think her apology was enough. And Lord Garth keeps forgetting sothing; this human is my mate. The Primus' mate."

"I would never accept that!"

"That's your cross to carry, and frankly, I don't care. I am only giving you this warning because before now, you have been most helpful. Of all the Lords, I considered your fealty to the strongest. But right now, I fear you're no better than the Lords who want off the throne."
