Mauve blinked as she looked at him with disbelief. This was the most unexpected thing ever. How did asking her to leave an he wanted her to stay?
"Let get this straight, you wanted to stay so you told if I left I shouldn't return?" She asked, peering at him.
Jael tore his gaze away from her, looking out the window once again. "That explains it."
"No, it doesn't. It sounded more like you needed a reason to get to leave and that was the perfect solution."
"No, I thought if you heard that, you wouldn't want to leave ," he replied, briefly looking at her before he looked away again.
"Why didn't you want to leave? I can't seem to see why that was a problem. I just wanted to go ho as the King requested. I was going to co back, it didn't seem to make sense to why you didn't want that."
"Why did you want to go back? You didn't have to. It wasn't like there was anything there for you and even though I was totally against it, you wouldn't drop it."
"Well, I didn't have to go, yes. But you being so adamant about it made a bit stubborn. You wouldn't even talk about it with . It was either what you wanted or nothing. If I had known you knew about my situation I would never have left. Why didn't you tell ?"
"Why didn't you tell ?" He repeated.
"Huh? I couldn't."
She tried not to roll her eyes. Did he honestly think she would have been able to tell him sothing like that? There was no way.
He frowned, his gaze intense. "Why not?" He asked.
Mauve frowned, "Because… Because…"
"Because you didn't trust ," he muttered. "You didn't trust enough to tell ."
"That's not it," she replied, looking away. It was hard to keep his gaze, the look in them made her a bit uncomfortable.
"You didn't trust that it wouldn't matter to ," he said.
It didn't matter? She looked at him with wide eyes. Did he just say that? What about the peace treaty? Surely, he would want a proper princess.
"It doesn't matter that I am the King's illegitimate daughter?" She asked even though she just heard what he said, she needed to confirm it for herself. To be sure she didn't hear wrong.
"Didn't I just say that?" He asked.
"You did," she replied and looked down.
"So, why couldn't you tell ?" He asked.
"I-I…" she paused and let out a loud sigh. "It was the reason we got together in the first place. Surely, I thought it was important to keep the facade up."
"It hurts to hear it," he whispered. "I would have thought I displayed otherwise."
She glanced up at him, "You could have made it easier for , you know." She said with a look in her eyes. "You could have told you knew."
If they had just communicated, half the things that happened wouldn't have but Jael was unreasonable sotis. He could have just told her he knew about it and he was fine with it.
He had no idea just how much worrying she had gone through because of this. Why didn't he just tell her? Why did he go through this roundabout thod?
"I didn't want you to know I went behind your back and I wanted you to tell in your own ti. To , it was your biggest secret and if you did tell , it would have shown just how much you trusted ."
He scratched his head as he spoke, she could feel how tense he was but it was nothing compared to the emotions that were going through her mind.
"You were testing ? And I failed the test," she whispered.
It was such a horrible test. He just threw it at her out of nowhere and at the ti going with her father had seed like the right option.
"I wouldn't say you failed it."
"You could say that because according to you, I chose my father over you," she held his gaze as she said this.
"It did feel like that," he blurted out.
"Now why would you think that?"
Surely, it was obvious that she cared about him. The fact that he thought this after everything also showed he had no trust in her.
"Several reasons."
"I am listening," she said and cozied up to him.
It should be a concern how his arms were growing more comfortable as ti went by. She knew she could sit there for as long as possible.
"You don't like it in vampire regions and as soon as there was an opportunity to leave, you were willing to take off even though I was against it. You wouldn't drop it no matter what and I thought that only proved my point."
Vampires rarely have a high heartbeat but with her head resting on his chest. She could feel him speak and could clearly hear his heartbeat.
"What makes you think I don't like it in the Vampire Regions?" She asks. "Surely, my behavior says otherwise. I have never given any indication that I hate it, have I?"
"I have seen the humans' territory and Evan's castle. There is nothing to like about vampire regions. It is bland and very dark." He looked earnest as he spoke and Mauve thought he looked a bit sad.
Was he worried that she hated it here and would leave as soon as she could? That's what he was saying in conclusion but she couldn't. She still had a hard ti believing this.
"That's not true. I like the castle very much, I like my garden and I like you. Aren't these all part of the Vampire Regions?" She looked up at him as she asked the question.
"They are, I suppose," he turned away and Mauve didn't know better she would have thought he was blushing.
