"Actually, I wasn't promised a princess," Jael announced.

"What?" Danag yelled out, he looked like he was about to convulse.

"Evan promised his daughter and now it makes sense why he would do that," Jael said with a dark look in his eyes.

She was sothing he wanted to get rid of, the thought put a nasty taste at the back of Jael's mouth. He wanted to punch sothing. Who would do that to their own offspring?

"I don't understand, Sire," Danag said with genuine confusion.

"There was no need for Mauve as I was fine without a trophy but you see, Lord Evan insisted. He said sothing about wanting leverage, he wanted to be sure Vampires weren't trying to deceive Humans. He asked if I would be willing to marry his only daughter who he loved so much to show we were indeed at peace." Jael paused dramatically as he waited for the words to sink in.

"I accepted his offer even though I didn't need to, at the ti it seed easier than listening to Evan go on and on. It was annoying how he was terrified of but wouldn't stop talking."

There was also the fact that Jael had thought it would be similar to having a pet. Their lives span were often shorter than their owners, he was certain he would find her bearable.

However, now the thought of her going away bothered him, let alone permanently. It was sothing he tried not to think about.

Jael knew he was rambling by the look on Danag's face. However, he was already fed up with Danag's ddling and he wanted to set the record straight.

"My point is, this is not enough to annul the alliance because there was never an alliance in the first place. It was a peace treaty and even if Mauve went ho, the peace treaty would still be in place on the condition that they keep offering us blood. She was never a part of the deal, she was simply an addition. I understand your concern but thinking getting rid of Mauve is the fastest way to get to choose a mate is laughable. I am not picking a mate until I have killed every last Paler there is or at least dwindled their population significantly."

"You would lose the trust of the Lords," Danag said with shrunken shoulders.

"You worry too much, Danag." Jael sighed. "You don't have to worry about that. I never had that in the first place. Besides, I am sure they are more concerned about Palers killing Vampires than a new heir."

"You'd be surprised," Danag mumbled. "I lied before, they weren't just speculations."

Jael chuckled, "And your idea of quelling it is giving them what they want. They should be grateful to instead of criticizing my every move."

Danag sighed, "This is not a ti to be fighting amongst ourselves. If you would just try a little bit, Sire. I am sure the Lords would be pleased."

Jael's brows dipped. "You want to be agreeable, you want to be my parents. Guess where that led them."

"I didn't an it like that, Sire…" Danag hurriedly said as he tried to apologize.

"I know exactly what you an, Danag. You have been with long enough and I know you for your straightforwardness and honesty. Underhanded thods don't suit you and I see the strain it puts on you. From now until I declare otherwise, you're no longer the Head Guard."

Danag's eyes widened in horror. "You don't have to go that far Your Grace, I understand and I won't ddle again."

"This isn't a punishnt, I am reducing your workload. For now, your only area of concern is the Palers and training the new intake once the squad starts, anything else is none of your business. If you trespass on areas that don't concern you, I'll consider that treason and know what that ans."

Danag opened his mouth to complain but imdiately closed it. "I understand, Sire. Thank you for being rciful."

"Tread carefully, Danag. You no longer have the privilege of a Head guard which ans you're just a guard of low birth, I won't let certain things slide."

Danag bowed, "I understand, Sire. I won't interfere."

"Good, I am glad we are on the sa page," Jael said with a bright smile. "You're dismissed."

"Thank you, Sire." Danag bowed again and headed for the door.

"Oh, that reminds , I know this goes without saying but if Mauve finds out about this, I am afraid I won't be so lenient."

"I wouldn't dare, Your Grace."

"Good, now send in Damon. The sooner I find your replacent, the better."

Danag's eyes widened slightly but his face imdiately returned to neutral expression. "As you wish."

Jael looked to the ceiling as the door closed. He tried to think about the conversation he just had with Danag but all he could think about was how much Mauve had to suffer.

Sohow, he felt a little annoyed that she didn't think she could share this with him. However, he couldn't bla her like Danag she most likely thought the base of the treaty was her.

Not just that, the title of being the illegitimate daughter of the King must have been sothing shaful for her. To think he had thought she didn't know what it ans to lose all you had but she had known that since she was five.

He groaned and ran his fingers through his hair. Almost imdiately a loud knock rang out.

"Co in," Jael said.

The doorknob turned imdiately and Damon walked in. His expression was unreadable as always.

As soon as he walked in, his gray eyes darted around as he took in his surroundings. He took about three steps forward and then bowed.

"You called for , Sire." He said with his head bent.

"Yes," Jael said casually.

"What would you like to do?" Damon asked.

"Co closer," Jael ordered.

Damon moved imdiately and was in front of the King in no ti. He stood in front of the desk and stared Jael in the eye.
