Jael tasted fear and it was bitter on his tongue. "Mauve!" His voice echoed in the forest as he rushed to her.

His mind feared the worst and the thought of it hastened his footsteps. He dropped to the ground beside her. He could hear her heartbeat as he got close enough. It didn't sound alarmingly low.

He picked her from the floor and held her in his hands. Her clothes were drenched in blood. Her right arm was bleeding and it looked like the cut was all the way to her right shoulder. He could tell the cut was deep.

However, that wasn't the only problem, he could sll the Paler, he looked around but didn't see anything but he could tell it had not gone far and it was still lurking around.

"Mauve," he called again and she groaned in his arms. She was conscious but not enough to make an audible sentence.

He studied her wounds, it didn't look like she had any bites. He prayed the wound was from the Paler's claw. If she had been bitten, there was no saving her. She will bleed to death, no matter what he did.

He took off the coat and ripped off his shirt from his body. She was bleeding profusely, he had to find a way to stop it, if she kept bleeding like this he feared the worst. She wouldn't need the Paler's venom to bleed out.

He used the cloth to wrap her body as carefully as he could. He didn't make it too tight but he wanted it tight enough to stop the bleeding. His shirt was soaked before he could wrap her arm.

He cursed. This was his fault. He shouldn't have stopped, they should have kept running until he got to the castle. However, the chance of another Paler attacking never occurred to him and he and Damon could have taken down the Paler.

Palers never attacked in pairs, the only thing he could think of was this being an ill-tid coincidence. However, there was no ti to dwell on this. He had to get her so kind of dical attention soonest.

Unfortunately, Vampires didn't have physicians, let alone one that can help a human. He only had one option. The problem was ti, he wasn't sure she had a lot left.

He had left Damon to handle the other Paler by himself. The Paler was a handful for both of them, he hoped Damon would manage. What he was most perturbed about was having to fight off a paler while carrying Mauve.

He stood to his feet, it was faster to get to the castle but there was no help there. His only option would take at least an hour, no matter how fast he ran, he knew he wouldn't be able to get there in less ti.

He had to try, the sound of her heartbeat was starting to dwindle and he was worried she might not have an hour. He wouldn't forgive himself if he couldn't save her.

Jael took a step forward and stopped in his tracks as a Paler fell onto the ground. He knew imdiately that this was the Paler that had attacked Mauve, he could sll her blood on it.

He sneered, as much as he wanted to beat it to a pulp he couldn't afford to waste any ti. Nevertheless, Jael knew he wouldn't be able to outrun it even if he tried.

He would have to engage but that was completely out of the question. He didn't have ti for that, not with Mauve bleeding out in his arms. The Paler stood unmoving and then its gaze fell on Mauve.

Jael moved to the side and the Paler moved with him, blocking his path. He gripped her tighter and took a step back. The Paler lunged at him imdiately and Jael barely moved out of the way in ti. All he could do in the situation was dodge.

Without missing a beat, the Paler made a sharp turn and rushed after Jael again. He moved out of the way and the Paler followed him. Whichever direction he fled, the Paler was quick to rush after him.

She groaned in pain in his hands and Jael looked down at her. Jael cursed, all this moving around must be hurting her. His shirt was getting stained with blood, the longer he ssed around with the Paler.

He had to find a way to lose it but he couldn't be careless. If he got attacked, Mauve was done for. He could hear Damon still fighting the other Paler.

Jael frowned were they together or this paler happened to co by at this exact mont? There were too many variables and not enough ti to think about them. Especially now, when he was barely jumping out of the way in ti.

The Paler was resilient, Jael wasn't surprised. They were known for their resilience. He moved out of the way and the creature bashed its head against a tree.

It appeared stunned but only for about two seconds. Enough ti for him to land or blow or a kick but he couldn't. The force will definitely reach Mauve. He tried to use it to get a head start but was in front of his path again.

Jael frowned, he thought he heard sothing other than the Paler rushing after him but it was probably nothing important. They were in a forest, after all, noises were everywhere.

He could still hear Damon battling the other Paler. This was good, silence was bad news. The worst-case scenario was trying to fight off two Palers.

His ears picked up a swishing sound and this ti around he was certain about it. Sothing was coming and from the sound of it, it was more than one.

They were moving too fast for him to tell what they were but he knew they would be upon him soon. He couldn't sll them either as the Paler in front of him stank so badly, it was all he could sll. The sll of another Paler would probably blend in with this one.

He swore and held Mauve closer.
