After her fight with Ace, Seraphina had always been cautious around him in case he would ask to cancel their marriage again.
However, Ace seed to have gotten over it—he treated her nicely and didn’t ask to break off their marriage.
"No, I have a friend who’s coming to see later," Ace answered aloofly.
Seraphina imdiately felt guilty, and almost got burned by the hot water she was pouring for him.
"Which friend? Ethan or Chris?" Her questions made him frown with displeasure.
"Do I have to report to you whenever I et my friends now?" "No, I’m just curious.
I’ll be glad if you’re eting Ethan because it’s been a while since I last t him.
I don’t know why he’s been so busy lately." Seraphina tried her best to sound casual as she pushed her hair behind her ear.
"No, I’m not eting them.
You’ll know later if you’re so curious, " Ace said calmly.
Right after he said that, he heard laughter outside the ward.
"Haha! Ace, why do we always et at the hospital?" A man in casual clothes walked into the ward, grinning mischievously.
He noticed Seraphina standing there, and smiled politely as he studied her.
"Hey, your fiancee is here, too?" "You are?" Seraphina was also studying him, having never t him before.
"I’m Owen Wagner, a neurosurgeon." Owen adjusted his glasses and extended his hand to her politely.
"A...Aneurosurgeon!" Seraphina trembled and dropped the glass in her hand.
"What’s the matter? Why are you so scared of ?" Owen was baffled by Seraphina’s reaction.
Most people were either jealous or admiring when he ntioned his profession, but he had never seen a reaction like this before.
Seraphina was scared out of her wits, and didn’t even dare to look at him.
"T-It’s nothing" Seraphina forced herself to calm down and faked a smile.
"I just find doctors a bit scary, especially neurosurgeons because they operate on people’s brains." Seraphina swallowed nervously, and asked him carefully, ’’Why did you co to see Ace?" "Well, your fiance had a brain surgery that made him lose a part of his mory, right? I’m thinking of checking him to see if I can help him regain his mories,’’ Owen told Seraphina honestly, putting his hands in his pockets casually.
The blood drained from Seraphina’s face, and she blurted out, " No, you can’t!" Owen raised a brow, dumbfounded by her response.
"Aren’t you Ace’s fiancee? Shouldn’t you be encouraging this? I only took this job because Ace and I are friends.
If not, I wouldn’t have co." "No, you’ve got wrong." Seraphina swallowed and lied smoothly, "Ace is finally cured, and I don’t want him to suffer again. It will affect his thinking. Plus, I’m afraid sothing bad might happen if we keep tampering with his brain."
"Oh, that’s what you’re worried about. There’s no need to worry-just look up my na, and you’ll see that I’ve never made any mistakes. You can just look forward to your fiance regaining his mories." Owen patted his chest proudly. He was confident in his surgical skills and fishing because he never failed in them.
Of course, Seraphina had heard of him. When she conspired with Jovan, they had considered bribing Owen, who could do a better job at it. However, after asking around, they learned that Owen was a weirdo who didn’t care about money or fa. He treated patients based on his mood, so it would be difficult to bribe him. Hence, they chose the second best neurosurgeon, soone who was not as skilled as Owen but could be easily controlled.
Owen’s confident assurance filled Seraphina with anxiety.
"You might be right, but Ace’s condition has finally beco stable. He shouldn’t be going through surgery again.
I just want to see him healthy, and it’s not important for him to regain those mories," Seraphina said hypocritically.
"You don’t have a say in this-only the patient’s words matter here," Owen said bluntly, and turned to Ace who had been quiet the whole ti. "Do you want to regain your mories, Ace?"
Ace replied casually, "I called you here, so of course I do. No one wants to live like a fool. I’d rather suffer in pain instead of having numb happiness."
His life seed perfect with his smooth career, and caring family and fiancee. There seed to be nothing to upset him, but he felt like a caged animal. He didn’t know what was going on outside, and everything he saw and touched was not what he truly wanted.
Besides, he used to be in complete control of his life, so how could he accept being controlled by others instead?
"Numb happiness?" His words made Seraphina’s eyes water. She walked up to him and held his hands. "Do you think being with is numb happiness? I’m alive, and I’m your fiancee. I’ve soldiered through a lot of hardships with you, you know. Do you have any idea how much you’ve hurt ?"
"I’m sorry..." Guilty, Ace looked at Seraphina’s pained expression. "I just don’t want to live life blindly... not again."
Seraphina said desperately, "There’s always a price to pay. Do you insist on opening Pandora’s box?"
"Yes!" Ace sounded firm, and his tone brooked no argunts.
Heaving a long sigh, Seraphina gave up. "I see you won’t change your mind, but you have to bear the risks of this, including death. Have you really thought this through?"
"I can accept that." After experiencing so many things, Ace had beco insightful and was no longer afraid of death.
"Fine then, do whatever you want! I’ll stop ddling in your business!" Helpless, Seraphina ran out of the ward furiously, leaving Ace and Owen in the ward.
Owen pulled a chair and sat beside Ace’s bed, shrugging and smiling teasingly. "I think you made her mad."
"She’s just insecure. She probably thinks I’ll change my mind after the surgery." Ace watched Seraphina leave and smiled bitterly.
It was Seraphina who stayed with him during those hard tis.
He knew he should take responsibility for that by marrying her and giving her a lifeti of happiness.
Besides, he believed that he truly loved Seraphina, and the surgery would not affect his love for her.
He just wanted to fill in the blanks in his mind.
Raising his brows, Owen remarked thoughtfully, "All insecurities arise from a lack of self-esteem.
Maybe she thinks she isn’t suited for you, or maybe she didn’t get in this relationship by honest ans.
If not, she wouldn’t be so worried." "Not by honest ans?" Frowning, Ace was perplexed by Owen’s explanation.
"It’s very normal that you don’t understand, but everything will co to light after the surgery.
You’ll know then why she’s feeling this way," Owen said aningfully.
As a neurosurgeon, he was aware of the ans of controlling people’s brains.
It was hard not to doubt Seraphina since she was so frightened.
However, he kept it hidden from Ace because it was still too early to tell him.
"Okay, you can pick a suitable ti for the surgery.
I’m ready whenever you are." Ace’s indifferent remark painted him as a person who had nothing to live for.
Owen chuckled in amusent.
"Don’t act like you’ve got nothing to live for.
It’s just a minor surgery, but I don’t think you should have it now. We should wait another ten to fourteen days until after you’ve recovered." "Okay." Ace nodded.
Owen leaned back in his chair, looking like he was contemplating sothing very deeply, "So, she’s your fiancee, huh? The one you loved dearly and experienced a lot with you? I thought you guys were lovey-dovey but now that I’ve seen it...
You both look like friends.
There’s no passion or anything indicating you both are lovers, and it’s very weird." "Well, not all lovers are lovey-dovey with each other. Although my fiancee and I have a dull relationship, what we feel for each other is true." Ace analyzed the situation rationally.
"Not at all!" Owen disagreed.
"All people who are in love will feel strongly for their beloved but I didn’t see that in you when your fiancee was around.
Instead, I saw that in you when you were with another woman." "Which woman are you referring to?" Ace demanded coldly.
"of course I’m talking about Joanna.
You bowed down and hired to treat her brother. I could see your passion for her, and I even felt that you guys looked more like a couple!" "We were once a couple," Ace admitted sincerely.
"But that was in the past, and we were unhappy together.
It was because of her that I lost my mories and was nearly killed." "Really? So, you had a love-hate relationship with her.
How interesting! Joanna is much more interesting than your fiancee." Owen’s eyes glead as he asked Ace, "But do you know she’s injured?"
