Chapter 61: Chapter 61

"I’ll freshen up then we can leave." She stood to head back to her room, ready to do anything to avoid thinking about Damon. He was a phantom both in her life and her thoughts; she didn’t think she could stand it.

"See you in a bit. Take your ti!" Mina cheered, and Avery knew what she ant. If she wanted to have more fun with Damon before going to work, she was free to do so. If she was being honest, she would have loved to, but she couldn’t keep procrastinating her work simply for the fun of it.

So she took two stairs at a ti to get to her room faster and pushed the door open, only to co face to face with a naked Damon.

"I asked you to cover up. Not strip to nothing." She scolded him.

He closed the door behind her and pushed her against it. "I would love to, but I can’t do that when I don’t have clothes to wear. So, can you be a doll and grab

a change of clothes from my house?" He ran a finger down her cleavage.

"Not if there’s nothing in it for ." She looked up to et his gaze with a subtle aning in her eyes, and she couldn’t believe she was doing this barely a minute after deciding to stay away from him.

"How about dinner tomorrow? My treat." He suggested.

"Okay." She couldn’t say no when she had been the one to ask for it so she decided that would be the last ti they would et if it had nothing to do with Angel.

"What’s your address and code?"

He directed her to a house that was closer than she thought, then gave her a code. She had to fight back her urge to invite him to take a shower with her and did it on her own, then she brought his clothes.

"I’ll drive you to work." He offered.

"No thanks, I’ll go on my own." She turned him down and got into her car faster than he could say a word more.

"Why do you have to act so dramatically?" Mina laughed at her reaction.

She pulled her seat belt and sighed in relief when she was settled in her car instead of Damon’s. "One minute, I’m a level-headed CEO, unfazed by anything, and the next, I’m thinking using my vagina. What do you think?"

Mina burst into laughter. "I think it’s alright to let yourself go sotis."

She knew that but was not ready to lose everything she had worked hard for.

....

It was a relief to get to her office and after having her coffee and snacks, she got to work.

"Is he kidding ?" She glared at an email she had received from an annoying sender who had been on her neck for nearly a year.

He owned an investnt company that took pride in being the force behind many conglorates’ success, especially those on the verge of bankruptcy.

However, "Vaillant Telecommunications does not need his investnt! Which part of this does he not understand?" She was on the verge of losing her mind. No matter how many tis she marked his email as spam, he would create a new one and he sohow managed to bypass Mina’s scrutiny.

"I suggest you tell him that to his face. He will keep calling and sending emails if you don’t." Mina advised.

"I know. He’s been doing so for a month." She marked the email as spam and moved on.

Alas, it wasn’t even minutes later when she received a ’see you soon’ email from an address she knew must belong to the sa sender. She rolled her eyes and ignored it, not knowing just how soon she ant.

When the door opened out of the blue, she was buried in a file and didn’t raise her head. "Just place them over there." She pointed at the space beside her hand on the desk, then she caught sight of a sliver of blue. Mina was wearing a floral dress and would never wear n’s perfu, so she nervously looked up.

Her heart raced as soon as she saw him.

"You!" She jolted out of her seat to escape and was yet to make it to the door when he caught her arm and pulled her back. She grabbed a lamp to use as a weapon but he pried it off her hand as fast, rendering her helpless. He clamped a hand over her mouth, muffling her call for security.

"Calm down, will you! I’m not trying to hurt you." He spoke soothingly but she would be a fool if she believed him. Her entire body was trembling but she knew she was on the losing side and he might hurt her if she didn’t comply, so she nodded.

"You will not scream, will you?" he asked. When she shook her head, he let go of her. "Good."

The door shut faster than she could get to it.

"Co on, that’s not the kind of reaction I expected after such a long ti of not seeing each other. Am I still your dear brother that you love the most?" He still had the nerve to laugh and make fun of her.

"My dear brother? He died as soon as this monster let his friend sexually assault !" Her voice trembled. "Was it fun?"

"Fun?" He sighed. "Vivi, that’s one of the things I regret the most. I didn’t know he was capable of hurting you and..."

"And you broke his hand when you found out." She filled in. "But so what? Does it change what he did? What you let him do in the na of protecting ?"

"Vivi..."

"Don’t call

that. It’s disgusting." She glared at him. "I don’t know why you are back, but I need you to leave. I’ll call the police if you don’t."

He still had a lot to say but when she grabbed her phone and dialed 911, he could only retreat before she made the call.

"Fine, I’ll leave. But I need you to know you misunderstood ."

She rolled her eyes at his ridiculousness. "You caged

all my life and you suddenly call it a misunderstanding? I don’t want to understand anything, okay? Just leave."

He hesitated. "I know who tried to kill Angel five years ago."

"Excuse ?" She asked before he left. He had tried to take her son out of the incubator, and now he claid to know what happened, as though he was accusing soone else of doing it?

"You will not believe , I know." He took a step back when she got close, knowing she might attack him if she thought he was going to hurt her.

"You apologized for it. You...you’re supposed to be in jail!" She pointed at him.

He smiled. "I got out a month ago."

"A month ago..." She thought back to the emails she had been receiving. Was it him all along?

He nodded as if he was reading her mind. "My apology a month ago was not because I had tried to hurt Angel. I would never do that. Although I hate Damon D’Aboville with my entire being, the child was innocent and I respected the fact that he is your son. Heck, I was excited to learn that I was an uncle." His smile didn’t seem fake when he talked about being an uncle, but she didn’t believe him.

"I apologized because I let our relationship get to this–to you thinking I was out to hurt you when I was only trying to protect your son."

She rembered the gun in her drawer and wondered whether she could get to it fast enough. Deciding it was not worth the risk, she took the lamp instead. "I’ll hit you if you don’t leave. Don’t push my hand."

"I will." He opened the door without leaving. "I don’t know how to make you understand that I’d never hurt you. I just want my sister back."

When he left, her legs gave in and she slumped onto the floor. He was one to talk. If he ant well like he was claiming, her life would never have co to this.

She rose to her feet after what felt like an eternity of trembling in fear and wondering what to do. She had never been able to get over the sight of her brother being taken away by the police, smiling at her like the maniac he was.

What would he have said about that if she asked? That he was crying and he mistook it for a smile? That he smiled because he felt less guilty now that she was wrongly accusing him?

She was tired of hearing excuses and everyone who wronged her in the past seed to be giving too many of those. She didn’t want to hear any more of them.

So, as soon as she had cald down from the fear and gotten hold of her phone, she called the prison. It took a torturously long ti before she was finally able to get through to them, and when the call connected, she suddenly didn’t know whether or not she wanted to go through with this. What if there was a shred of truth in his words and reporting him took that away?

She shook her head. Why did it matter?

"Are you still there?" A bellow pulled her out of her myriad of thoughts.

"I would like to report a fugitive on the loose."
