The next few days passed in a haze of cold silence. Abby moved through the house like a ghost, her presence felt but never acknowledged. Remo tried to engage her, to break the icy barrier that had ford between them, but his attempts were t with indifference or curt responses. The warmth and connection they had once shared seed like a distant mory, replaced by a tension that neither of them could escape.

One evening, as Remo sat in the living room pretending to watch television, he couldn’t take it anymore. The silence was suffocating, the distance unbearable. He turned off the TV and walked into the kitchen, where Abby was thodically washing dishes, her movents robotic and detached.

"Abby, we need to talk," he said, his voice strained with frustration.

She didn’t turn around, her back remaining rigid as she continued to scrub a plate. "What is there to talk about, Remo?"

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Everything. This silence, this distance between us. I can’t stand it anymore. I need to know what’s going on."

Abby set the plate down and turned off the water, finally turning to face him. Her eyes were cold, her expression unreadable. "You know what’s going on. You made it perfectly clear that night."

Remo felt a pang of guilt and confusion. "What do you an? I was honest with you because I thought that’s what you wanted. I care about you, Abby. I just..."

"Just can’t love ," she finished for him, her voice filled with a mixture of bitterness and sadness. "I know. You’ve said it before."

He stepped closer, reaching out to touch her arm, but she pulled away. "Please, Abby. Talk to . I don’t understand why you’re shutting out."

She looked at him, her eyes flashing with a sudden anger. "You don’t understand? How could you possibly understand? You get to walk around with your heart safely locked away, while I’m left here, exposed and vulnerable."

Remo felt his frustration growing. "I never wanted to hurt you. I thought being honest was the best way to protect you, to make sure you knew where we stood."

Abby shook her head, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. "Protect ? You think this is protecting ? This silence, this emptiness? I’ve done everything I can to be here for you, to love you, and all I get in return is ’I care about you.’"

Her words cut deep, and Remo struggled to find a response. "Abby, I... I never ant for it to be like this. I thought..."

"What, Remo?" she interrupted, her voice rising. "What did you think? That I could just turn off my feelings because you can’t reciprocate them? That I could be satisfied with just ’caring’?"

He stared at her, the weight of her words settling heavily on his shoulders. "I didn’t know it was this bad. I didn’t realize how much it was hurting you."

She looked away, her eyes filling with tears. "It’s been killing , Remo. Every day, I wake up hoping for sothing more, and every day, I’m disappointed. I’m not sure I can do this anymore."

His heart sank at her words, a cold fear gripping him. "What are you saying, Abby? Are you asking for a divorce?"

She hesitated, her face a mask of anguish. "I don’t know, Remo. I just... I need to think. I’ve gotten my revenge, and now I’m left with this emptiness. I don’t know if I can live like this."

Remo felt a surge of panic. "Please, Abby. Don’t leave. We can work through this. I’ll do whatever it takes."

She shook her head, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I need space, Remo. I need to figure out what I want, what I need. I can’t keep pretending everything is okay when it’s not."

With that, she turned and walked out of the kitchen, leaving Remo standing there, his mind reeling. He heard the bedroom door close behind her, the finality of the sound echoing in the quiet house.

He sank into a chair, his head in his hands. The reality of the situation crashed over him like a wave, and he felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness. He had tried to protect her, to be honest, but in doing so, he had pushed her away. Now, he was faced with the possibility of losing her forever.

The hours passed slowly, each minute stretching into an eternity. Remo sat alone in the living room, his thoughts a tangled ss of regret and fear. He replayed their argunt over and over in his mind, searching for sothing he could have said or done differently.

Finally, he stood and made his way to the bedroom. He paused outside the door, his heart heavy with dread. He knew he needed to give her the space she had asked for, but the thought of being apart from her was almost unbearable.

He knocked softly, waiting for a response. When none ca, he opened the door quietly and peered inside. Abby was lying on the bed, her back to him, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs. The sight of her in such pain tore at his heart, and he felt a fresh wave of guilt and sorrow.

"Abby," he said softly, stepping into the room. "I’m so sorry. I never wanted to hurt you."

She didn’t respond, her sobs the only sound in the room. Remo stood there for a mont, unsure of what to do. Finally, he turned and left the room, closing the door behind him. He made his way to the couch in the living room and lay down, staring up at the ceiling.

As the night wore on, Remo’s thoughts continued to race. He knew he had to find a way to make things right, to bridge the gap that had grown between them. But for now, all he could do was wait and hope that Abby would find it in her heart to forgive him.

The silence of the house pressed down on him, a constant reminder of the distance between them. Remo closed his eyes, willing sleep to co, but it was a long ti before he finally drifted off, his dreams haunted by the image of Abby’s tear-streaked face.
