The chilling chanical voice echoed in everyone’s ears, as death slowly approached.
No one expected such an oversight to occur just as they were about to succeed.
They had just left the core area, still three hundred ters from the main entrance.
One minute was not enough for them to escape.
Most importantly, the detection chamber had its own protective and self-destruct systems.
To prevent the unknown elents from leaking throughout the entire base, the detection chamber would initiate an automatic destruction sequence.
If they didn’t get out, they would also be targeted for destruction by the system.
"Turn, turn it off!" A researcher frantically cut the power, "Professor Sinai, I’ve cut all the power here."
The chanical voice repeated the sa phrase, no change at all.
"Alarm! Alarm! Unknown elent leak!"
At this, everyone panicked.
Even though they had prepared to sacrifice themselves for science before entering the research base, none of them anticipated this outco.
However, Sinai had already cald down: "Everyone, don’t panic, there’s a way."
She took off her shoes and handed them to another female researcher to put on.
She then took a few small robots out of her pocket and handed them to a few elderly colleagues.
These small robots usually did housekeeping but could transform into simple flying devices in crucial monts.
Within a few seconds, white mist had filled the detection chamber.
This mist mixed with the leaking unknown elents.
The protective suits couldn’t fully stop the invasion of unknown elents; the face of a 68-year-old researcher had already turned bluish-black.
The other researchers also felt weak in their limbs, so even burst into tears.
"Listen carefully to ," Sinai coughed, her voice trembling, "Hold your breath, don’t look back, ten seconds is enough for you to get out."
She pressed a button on her wristband as she spoke.
The little robots, transford into flying devices, received the command and quickly carried the researchers out.
Sinai took out one more robot from her pocket.
She paused, her gaze falling on the young man beside her.
He was the youngest researcher in the team, having just turned eighteen this year.
Two people.
One last robot.
Sinai’s eyelashes lowered, her fingers tightened.
"Professor Sinai, I’m not afraid!" The young man clearly noticed the extraordinary nature of the robot in Sinai’s hand, he grabbed her hand and smiled, "You, you must get out, I’ll be fine, really."
"Go quickly," Sinai said in a low voice, "You’re still young, with a long life ahead, why hesitate? Think of your parents, they are still waiting for you to successfully develop a Cosmic Carrier."
She tried to lighten the mood: "I won’t have the chance to see it, but if you’re willing, send so photos soday."
The young man couldn’t refuse at all.
Sinai unceremoniously transford the last small robot into a simple flying device, attached it to the young man, pressed the button, and pushed him out.
"Professor Sinai!"
The shout faded into the increasingly dense white mist, disappearing entirely.
[Self-destruct sequence initiated]
[The gate is about to close]
Two red fras dominated the detection screen outside, incessantly emitting warning sounds.
The other group also panicked.
"Quick! Call the rescue team!" Charlotte shakily dialed a number, "There are still people inside! Eleven people!"
What level of elent leak triggered the self-destruct sequence in the detection chamber?
Eleven lives, who could bear such responsibility?
"They made it out!" Soone shouted in surprise and delight, "They made it out!"
Charlotte spun around and saw several rotating flying devices bringing the researchers outside.
The researchers were on the ground but definitely still alive.
Yet she couldn’t find Sinai among them.
Until the last figure erged, it still wasn’t Sinai.
Eleven people went in, but only ten ca out.
"Professor!" Charlotte was panic-stricken, "Where’s the professor?!"
She gritted her teeth, grabbed a spare protective suit, and prepared to dash inside.
But at that mont, a larger red fra popped up on the screen.
[Self-destruct sequence initiated]
"Boom!"
A loud noise, and the gate sealed shut completely, isolating the inside from the outside.
"..."
The researchers who made it out collapsed on the ground, drenched in cold sweat.
Although they had escaped, they had inhaled a considerable amount of unknown elents, leaving those with weaker constitutions already in comas.
Other researchers scrambled forward, initiating ergency rescue procedures.
Charlotte supported the last escaping young man.
"Pro, Professor Sinai is still inside!" The young man cried out in distress, falling apart, "What do we do! She got trapped inside to save ! It should’ve been !"
Without Sinai, they all would have died inside.
She clearly could have escaped, but she gave the chance of survival to others.
Charlotte was stunned.
The countdown continued, one after another, cold and rciless.
[35, 34, 33... ]
"Soone must have tampered!" Charlotte gritted her teeth, tasting iron in her mouth, "Just an hour ago, everything in the detection chamber was normal, and there were no signs of the elents exceeding the threshold."
Who could it be?
Why did the unknown elent leak occur?
Even a minor leak wouldn’t trigger the self-destruct sequence in the detection chamber.
An incident of this magnitude shouldn’t have happened.
It must have been deliberate.
Yet, the experint projects were every researcher’s hard work, who would intentionally destroy them?
"It’s over." Charlotte turned pale, wavering on her feet, "What do we do, we can’t get in, and the professor probably can’t get out!"
Once the self-destruct sequence started, it was completely irreversible.
Just then, Charlotte felt a blur before her eyes, as if a gust of wind swept past.
Simultaneously, soone shouted excitedly, "Soone went in! Did you see soone go in?!"
"I saw it, he went in! He went directly in!"
Others lifted their heads, dumbfounded as they stared at the still firmly closed gate, their minds a bit stunned.
Charlotte was sure she saw a man’s figure enter the completely sealed detection chamber with such ease.
The gate showed no signs of damage.
How was this possible?
**
The concentration of white mist in the detection chamber had reached a point where nothing was visible.
Sinai leaned against the wall, having inhaled too many unknown elents, she lacked the strength to stand.
Even breathing caused her heart and lungs to ache, nearly suffocating her.
She took a look at the extent of damage to her protective suit.
88%.
Once it reached 100%, the leaking unknown elents would instantly penetrate all her organs.
However, it wouldn’t require reaching 100%, even in a while, the explosion would leave her without remains.
Sinai thought she had finally co to this point.
Sacrificing herself for science.
That seed good too.
She wasn’t a sage, no reincarnation.
She wasn’t an alchemist or an ancient martial artist, capable of endless life.
Perhaps this was the barrier between her and Norton.
She would be like many who passed through his life, leaving no trace.
In a very distant future, she should have died long ago, and he would still be cooking for another person, taking another to the amusent park.
This person could make him share his entire past honestly, could open up completely, and could understand him well.
He wouldn’t bully that person either, he would treat her well.
They would embrace, play music together, fall in love.
Such a scenario really was quite nice.
Sinai tilted her head back, her eyes moistening slightly.
She reminded herself to stay strong, but tears still fell undeterred.
Drop by drop, soaking into the protective suit.
She also wished soone would appear at her side when she was in danger, protecting her.
But no one did.
All the small robots were gone too.
In the end, she was alone.
The countdown continued in her ears.
[10, 9, 8...]
The white mist thickened, and Sinai eventually couldn’t hold on anymore.
Just before her consciousness fully faded, she vaguely saw soone running toward her.
Exhausted, Sinai lifted her head, her vision completely blurred, unable to make out the approacher’s features.
She could only see a pair of dark green eyes, their icy depths shattered entirely, leaving only panic and fury.
She closed her eyes, thinking.
How could she think of him even as she faced death?
Truly pathetic.
Sinai’s head fell, her body crumpled heavily, senseless.
Thus, she didn’t know that soone caught her in ti, and the countdown stopped simultaneously.
The white mist slowly dissipated, revealing the handso face of a man.
Norton held her tightly, speaking softly, "Fool."
