Chapter 49: Ch 49: Preparation - Part 4
When I first heard of the hunter’s championship, a lot of things ca to my mind.
Granted, most of them had to do with fighting or similar competition, but there were truly a lot of ways for the hunters to compete.
The more I read regarding the hunter’s competition, the more botherso it seed to . Especially the first few rounds which were designed to weed out the teams that were just there to have fun.
For example, the first round was not even a real fight, but a written quiz where we had to answer as many questions related to dungeons as possible.
I looked at the questions from previous years and they were not tough. But any team that had no interest in dungeons wouldn’t be able to qualify for this round.
The next few rounds were similar as well, testing for agility and one’s senses against the dungeon monsters.
To , they all looked like normal everyday things I lived through and needed to know. But to see most people in the competition fail to do so made
feel sothing inside .
I could not tell if it was disappointnt or another emotion I could not distinguish. But I just knew that I felt annoyed as hell because of this.
Joshua saw
frowning at the screen and looking at the competition’s starting rounds from the previous years, and he misunderstood why I was frowning.
"Don’t worry too much about the first few rounds. Even if you don’t perform well, there is no need to panic. The rest of our team has enough experience to get through most of the selection process. We will make it to the dungeon easily."
Joshua assured , but I had a bad feeling about this whole championship.
It almost felt like a mockery of all the misery I went through in the past. I suffered through hell to learn and survive, and now, being a hunter had been turned into an almost joke.
’It has been 10 years of peace, so I guess I need to adapt to the new changes. But I just cannot forget what all this peace cost
and my friends.’
Sam stopped the car in front of the hotel our team was to stay at, and Joshua got out first before he opened my door for .
I got out as well, and Sam drove off to park the car in place.
"Co, I will introduce you to the rest of the team. Don’t judge them based on how they look. We are all professionals who have made it past the qualifiers every ti. We might as well be professionals at this point."
Joshua told
before he opened the door to our team’s room.
Inside were two more people. The pair were two females, one oga and the other a beta. They both turned to look at
when I entered, and I could sense hostility.
"The green-haired beta is Amy and she’s a barrier mage. The red-haired oga is Sasha and she’s a healer. If you get hurt, go to her imdiately."
Joshua told , and I felt a little surprised to see Sasha here.
Usually, healers were snatched up by hospitals and other big guilds, no matter their rank. They were also offered a lot of money for their service. I had never really seen a healer join in a dangerous competition.
"Hey, where are you looking? Do you have a problem with Sasha? Do you want
to punch your face to make you look away?"
Amy asked, noticing my questioning look when I looked at the red-haired girl. The beta had also stood up and tried to hide the female oga behind her body.
I could only blink as I took in this hostility. I had not expected this kind of behavior to be shown toward .
"I...excuse ...huh...? I was just a little surprised to see a healer here."
I quickly assured the duo in front of , but Sasha did not look too convinced.
Finally, I looked at Joshua for help, and he looked amused. He chuckled before he stepped forward and coughed into his fist to grab Amy’s attention.
"Amy, it’s fine. Manet is our last teammate I recruited. He’s cute-looking, right? But no matter how cute you think he is, I need you to be on your best behaviour around him. Do you understand?"
Joshua reminded Amy and the beta went red-faced.
"What do you an? I was not flirting. I was genuinely unhappy with...ugh..."
Amy looked to be lost for words, and even I felt awkward to see her act this way.
But clearly, both Sasha and Joshua were used to her behaviour and did not pay her much attention.
"Don’t worry about Amy. She will be fine once her brain restarts. The fact that she was on guard against you ans she thinks you are cute. Anyway, you can leave your stuff in the room and co join us for lunch. We can discuss things at that ti."
Joshua pointed
toward the room he intended to give , and I entered the room quietly before I put my stuff down.
Once I was safe in the room, I put my bag inside my inventory because I did not trust it enough to leave it in the room while I was not there.
But I took out the black mass in the bottle before I did that.
"Hey human, where are we? This doesn’t look like my ho dungeon...this place is too new and shiny. Weren’t you going to take
back ho?"
The black mass asked , and I felt my head throbbing as I tried to keep up with its questions. But it was genuinely starting to piss
off how much this thing could talk.
’Have so patience. I cannot allow this thing to get to .’
"It will take so ti before we can head to dungeon #36. I will transfer you to another container for easy travel for now. Don’t you dare cause
any trouble with this."
I threatened the black mass and it shrunk back.
"Oh my! How could you say that? Have I not been helpful to you? I have made sure not to cause any problems either. You can trust
with your life."
The black mass assured , and that sounded like a threat to . I would rather not even try to do that, even if my life was in danger.
"Yeah, I would pass on that. For now, get in here."
I opened a smaller container and the black mass moved without much prompt.
’Is it only , or is this thing following orders really well? What the heck is it planning?’
The fact that I could not sense any ability or any will to escape from this black mass was worriso. And the agreeable nature it was showing
made it even more suspicious.
"I will need to keep a harsher eye on this thing. There is no telling what could happen now."
Once the seal was tightened and the creature was contained, I headed toward the lunch room. It was ti to plan what to do next.
