Chapter 288: Chapter 288
"I told you to speak to
before you did anything to Killian or Alia. Now the castle is filled with dead n. Their blood scattered all over the walls. What would convince you to attack Killian when there is light out? For the servants to see that it was us who made the first attack? Tell , Fraser!" Beth yelled, frustrated by how Fraser refused to listen.
Fraser stared into his mirror at the crown on his head. He was the king so he could do as he wanted. He saw a chance for him to get rid of Killian and he took it. "They were supposed to be the best n who could kill Killian. They’ve killed n from the north before."
"The man has seen war many tis, Fraser. Have you not heard the tales that co down from the mountain to us? He is not like the other northerners our side has killed. That is why he still stands today. It required careful planning to kill him. He sits at our table for food. We could have poisoned him to make him weak. You attacked without any sort of plans and now we must fear what he will do in retaliation of your actions," Beth explained.
"I will place one of the n in the court as the one behind what happened. They will only need to be imprisoned while Killian is here-"
"And what if he demands that this person be killed? What will you do then?" Beth pressed further, folding her arms. Fraser thought the first thing that co to his mind would always work. He had to consider other options. "If you were not my son, I would have hoped for there to be a different king."
"I’ve been waiting for you to say that since the crown was put on my head. You were like that with uncle, weren’t you? The only difference was that you wanted him dead so you would be considered for the throne. It must have upset you when he married Anne and worried you when she beca pregnant. You must have prayed that he never have an heir-"
"Fraser," Beth said in a warning tone.
"Are we not telling each other the truth now? My uncle could not keep won out of his bed so you knew eventually he might have a prince, but if there was a chance he didn’t, Alia would never be queen so you put your dreams in . Did you love
because I am your child or because I was your way of getting the throne? For you to rule behind ?" Fraser asked, wanting a genuine answer from his mother.
"I love you because you are my son. How could I not love you when I brought you into this world? I hate the king that you are. I have been preparing you for this very mont-"
"You were preparing
to be a king who would sit back and let you rule behind . You did not consider how much I would love the throne and the power that cos with it. No one will rule through . Not Margaret and not you. I allowed you to be my right hand so you can feel as though you were queen and offer
advice when I need it. I don’t need your advice now. Watch how I rule," Fraser said, fixing his crown on his head and then leaving the mirror to find better clothes for him to dress like the grand king he was.
"This is how she must have felt," Beth muttered, referring to Margaret. To have a son who did things his way, and you could feel his death was near, but there was nothing you could do.
"I have already taken care of that woman. It turned out that there was no need for
to ever worry about her. She was deceiving us into thinking she was pregnant. When I am finished with Killian, I will have that whore hung up beside him for the kingdom to see what a liar she was. There is no one to rival my position as the king- You!" Fraser froze when his mother was suddenly by his side, holding his hands.
"This is my fault," Beth admitted. She knew how deadly the castle was and how many threats the person who sat on the throne would have. The king needed to be full of knowledge to stay ahead of his enemies. Fraser was not prepared to beco a king. No, she had to admit that he would never have made a good king, no matter how hard she tried.
Fraser liked how he looked as a king more than helping the people. She would have been better off working with Alia to make a princess beco queen without having to marry. They were better rulers than the n who ruled with their egos.
Fraser picked a fight with Killian that he would not be able to win, even if he were to surround himself with castle guards to protect himself. Fraser drove away people like Leonard, who would have kept him safe from Killian. If Fraser had just listened to her, they could have plotted to get rid of Killian, Alia, and Margaret, so their biggest enemies would be gone.
Beth tiptoed to kiss Fraser’s forehead as a goodbye. She knew that sooner than she would have liked, she would find him dead. "My dreams and my actions have cost this family so much. I should have lived quietly with your father like I was supposed to. I want you to know now that I am sorry."
Before Fraser could ask his mother what she ant and why she was acting like one of them was dying, there was a knock at the door. Repeated knocks, like the person outside, was panicking.
"Don’t." Beth grabbed Fraser’s hand to stop him from going.
Fraser removed his mother’s hand. "I am not going to hide in my own castle. I will kill that man today if it ans I have to use every last one of my guards. Stay here if you are afraid. I will be back soon after dealing with the fool beating on my door as if it is an instrunt."
Fraser continued to push away Beth’s hand when she tried to grab him again. He went to his bedroom door and opened it, finding a guard with a panicked look. "Out with it before I have your hands."
"My king. Your cousin and her guards are taking over the throne room. Her husband has left-"
Fraser walked past the guard before more could be said. All he needed to hear was that Killian had left the castle and Alia remained alone. His mother worried for nothing. If Killian was going back to the north to get an army, he would be t with the Blackwell army when he ca back down.
Fraser doubted that was going to happen since Alia was still here. Killian might not have loved Alia like his mother believed if he could leave her in the hands of the people who tried to kill him. She would be used as his weakness if he were stupid enough to leave the woman he loved in this castle, thinking a few guards would save her, or it was possible that Alia had cald Killian down and sent him ho.
Fraser chuckled, as it was all too funny. Now that Killian was gone, he could treat Alia as he wanted.
As Fraser neared the throne room doors, he noticed that the usual guards were not there to open the doors for him, but he paid no mind to it and opened the doors himself.
"What the hell are you doing?" Fraser questioned Alia, who sat on his throne.
