Chapter 172: Chapter 172
"What do you need
to do?" Annabelle asked, taking a seat beside Margaret.
"You can’t hide in your room any longer. If I was able to easily find out, it wouldn’t be hard for anyone else to beco suspicious. Continue to act as you did when Richard was still alive. I will assign you a guard and have a doctor provide updates that I want to everyone else. Should you think of backstabbing , you should know, it is quite hard to kill . If my husband was here right now, he would confirm this," said Margaret.
Unlike Annabelle, Margaret wasn’t afraid of doing. She was going all out to do this final task to make sure Alia or a child of Alia would sit on the Blackwell throne.
"I don’t want to die, Margaret. I am not foolish like you have always thought," Annabelle replied. She had to cling to whoever could keep her alive to help her shake up this castle. She was not done yet and was determined to raise her status in the castle.
"Everyone important will be going to the border to watch Alia get married. You are ant to stay behind since you are pregnant and the journey might be rough. This gives anyone looking to kill an open window to carry it out. I will take you out of the castle in the middle of the night and have you sent to my ho until I return from the wedding. No one must see you leaving."
"I understand. So, what am I to do now? Go out and wander the castle? Speaking highly of my nonexistent child?" Annabelle asked, throwing out ideas of how she would put on the act of everything being normal.
Margaret stood up from the uncomfortable chair. "Do as you wish as long as you don’t get yourself killed. Beth and Cedric have started to move into the castle so if you find yourself in trouble, send for ."
"Won’t they beco suspicious of your sudden interest in protecting ? They will know you are aware of their plans to kill ," Annabelle stated the one flaw in their plan. Everyone will question why two won who hated each other’s guts were now suddenly friendly and try to figure out what they are up to. "Isn’t there anyone who can defend or save
publicly in your place?"
"There is one person but just like , she hates the castle. I will send a request for her to co to the castle. I must leave now before the maids start to chatter about
being here. Get dressed and start putting on your act. And please, at least try to not make your stomach different sizes so quickly," Margaret said, looking at a small ball of clothes Annabelle was most likely using to hide her flat stomach.
Margaret didn’t have any high hopes Annabelle could execute her plan well but she would move quickly to get rid of Fraser as king in the next few months before Annabelle was expected to have a baby. At the wedding tomorrow, she needed to pull Alia to the side and remind her how important it was for her to get pregnant quickly.
Margaret left Annabelle’s room. The maids bowed as she walked by and right away, one of her familiar guards ca behind her. She hardly trusted the castle guards, so she brought her own. Guards who could not be bribed or easily killed.
"Assign a guard to her and a few spies to keep an eye on her. I don’t trust her at all. She is rely a puppet. Did you spot any of them in the castle?" Margaret asked the man beside her.
"Three so far," he replied.
"Hmm. Killian has left behind quite a few spies to keep an eye on this castle," Margaret’s lips curled. Of course, Killian did not trust that Fraser would honor the truce they started. Thanks to her family’s history with demons, Margaret and her guards were able to pick up on demons lingering in the castle.
"They are normally hanging around your grandson-"
"He is not my grandson. He is a fool," Margaret spat. "As soon as the new batch of weapons is made, hand them out to everyone."
"Yes, my lady."
Just like how she didn’t trust Annabelle, Margaret didn’t trust many of the people Alia would co across in the north. For the first ti in many years, she ordered weapons capable of killing demons to be made once again. It was only in case anything happened to Alia, she would personally destroy the north herself. The demons keeping an eye on Fraser were the least of her concern.
Margaret narrowed her eyes when she spotted Beth walking around with her son hot on her tail. From the way Fraser walked with his head down, sothing bad had happened.
Beth’s eyes widened for a mont when she t eyes with Margaret but quickly composed herself. "Lady Margaret," she greeted her stepmother with a curtsy. Of all people she could run into today, she wished it wasn’t Margaret.
"Beth, I am seeing more of you in the castle now. It feels odd. You and I have always stayed away from the castle," said Margaret.
Fraser lifted his head after he felt his suspicions were confird that it was Margaret who had a hand in keeping his mother out of the castle. Soon, he would have it that Margaret would be the one who could not step foot in the castle. He would be doing her a favor since she many tis said she disliked being here. Fraser was only waiting for the crown to be placed on his head.
"Well with all the changes going on in Fraser’s life, I thought it was only right that I co to offer a helping hand with all that he is planning. When you have so ti, I hope that you can sit and have snacks with Fraser. He spoke of wanting to spend ti with you," Beth lied.
Fraser looked at the back of his mother like she was crazy.
His expression wasn’t missed by Margaret who wouldn’t have believed Beth’s words even if she didn’t see Fraser’s expression.
"I’m afraid I won’t have free ti today or tomorrow. I must prepare to see Alia today and pick out a beautiful outfit for her wedding. After that, I don’t mind spending ti with Fraser but by then he will be busy with his coronation. Also, there is the fact that the two of us are not seeing eye to eye now. I don’t agree with his antics lately," Margaret stated, refusing to look at Fraser another second.
"We were just looking for Leonard to apologize but we’ve learned that he has left the castle and has no plans of coming back. Fraser didn’t an to-"
Margaret held up her right hand to stop Beth from trying to give so half-assed excuse for Fraser. "That is a phrase you let slide when soone is below five. Fraser is at the age that he knows better. I had to spend that day convincing so of the guard captains to not follow Leonard out of the castle. You know firsthand that a fool on a throne will not last long, Beth."
"That is why you should be concerned about Alia," Fraser cut in, taking a jab at his cousin who was the only fool he could see.
Beth wished to slap her son over the head for speaking when she was already dealing with Margaret. Why bring up Alia to upset Margaret further?
"Alia, a fool?" Margaret laughed out loud as it was the funniest thing she heard all day. "This ti, I won’t correct you on that, Fraser. I will let Alia prove you wrong and perhaps, I will let you prove
wrong that you are not a fool though I think it is too late for you to convince . Beth, as one mother to another, fix your son before you end up in my position."
With nothing left to say to the pair, Margaret continued to walk straight ahead, forcing Beth and Fraser to part to let her through.
Beth sighed, holding back her constant desire to lash out at Margaret. She stared at the tall man behind Margaret. She never understood where Margaret would always find these scary-looking n to protect her. Beth witnessed many tis how these guards Margaret had blocked anyone who tried to kill her. Beth wanted to buy their services to protect Fraser but of course, Margaret would never give away where she found them.
"Fraser, you must learn when to bite your tongue and when to speak. Now was not the ti to provoke her. I needed to know where Leonard had run off to so we could bring him back. You have let
down too many tis today. Go and finish your studies. No!" Beth exclaid when Fraser took a step forward to apologize to her. "
