Monday morning arrived too quickly, dragging us back from the dreamy escape of the weekend into work. So much work. I had been on my feet for what felt like forever, even though it was barely eleven o’clock.
The conference room was filled with engineers and departnt heads, along with the chanical design, finance, and accounting teams.
My man sat at the head, looking every inch the commanding CEO in his black-as-night suit. His eyes drifted to , where I sat to his right, and they lingered.
They stayed on my face, his green eyes softening into a look that turned my stomach to jelly and made want to ruffle his perfectly slicked-back hair.
I wiggled my brows at him, and the corner of his lips quirked up before he looked away. I was getting hooked on his smile, Lord have rcy.
"So what’s the agenda for the upcoming VTD engine upgrade test on the racetrack?" Finn asked.
The head of Engineering shifted in his seat. "It’s ready for testing, sir."
"Good. Miss Kellerman, push my schedule ahead by an hour. I want to test the engine upgrade."
"Noted, Mr Wolfe-"
The door to the conference room suddenly flew open, and guess who walked right in?
The devil.
That may be an understatent, but it might as well have been evil itself. Victoria strutted in, all wrapped up in a tight black dress and pumps to match. A younger woman trailed behind her, carrying a designer bag, bowing her head.
Every head in the room turned.
I had almost, almost managed to forget the stunt she pulled on Saturday, but here she was with her white-coated nails throwing it back in my face.
Why was she here? The first and only ti I had ever seen her in this building was when she ca to tell so graciously how Finnegan was married to her.
She smiled brightly, waving a manicured hand. "Hello, everyone! So sorry to interrupt. I’m Victoria Wolfe, Finnegan’s wife. I thought I’d pop in to support my husband during this important eting."
A ripple of shock moved through the room. Whispers broke out imdiately. Finnegan’s face remained cold and composed, but I saw the fury burning in his erald eyes.
His jaw tightened, and his fingers flexed on the table. Irritation flared hotly in my bones when she walked straight to Finnegan, leaning down to kiss him ON THE LIPS, in front of everyone.
How dare she touch him like that?
"Darling, you look so handso in that suit," she purred, loud enough for the whole room to hear. "I missed you this weekend."
Finnegan’s hand ca up imdiately, firmly pushing her away. "Victoria, this is a professional eting. You’re being inappropriate."
She pouted dramatically, playing the doting wife so well that it sickened . She didn’t get to touch him like that after all she did to Angel and Finnegan. He could be soft and tolerate her bullshit, but I was this close to ripping her extensions out.
Oh sweet lord in heaven, was I... was I jealous?
"Oh, don’t be like that, honey. I’ll wait for you in your office, okay?" She pressed her lips to his again before sauntering out, her assistant trailing behind her.
The room fell dead silent for several seconds. I kept my face as neutral as I could, but inside, I was burning.
The audacity of that woman, walking in here like she had any right to touch him after everything she’d done.
How much more was she going to hurt him? I wished there was so way to end this for him.
Finnegan cleared his throat, voice ice-cold. The playful glint in his eyes was completely gone. "Let’s continue."
The eting dragged on, and when it finally ended, Finnegan rose abruptly.
"Miss Kellerman, with ," he said curtly.
We took the elevator to the top floor.
"I’m sorry she’s here-"
"Co on, Finn, it’s not your fault," I murmured, taking his hand.
"I’ll handle this."
"No." I tilted my head to the side, reaching up to stroke his jaw. Every single hint of a smile was completely gone from his face just because she showed up. "We’ll handle this together."
His warm hand covered mine just as the elevator doors slid open. When we reached his office, Victoria was already there, lounging on the couch.
"Finally," she said with a sweet smile. "I’ve been waiting."
Finnegan’s jaw clenched. "Victoria, get out. I’m calling security."
She laughed lightly. "Go ahead. I dare you. There are at least thirty dia vans outside the gates right now. They’ll love seeing your n throw your own wife out of the building. Think of the headlines, darling."
Finnegan’s hands curled into fists. She had him cornered. But if we couldn’t get her to leave, then we could leave.
Ignoring her, I calmly opened my tablet and began reading his next schedule aloud. "You have the VTD gear upgrade test at the racetrack in twenty minutes, sir. The engineering team should already be on its way to the site. Then a briefing with the board at 4 PM."
Victoria’s smile faltered as we continued working around her like she was invisible. Her irritation grew with every passing minute until she finally snapped.
"I’m surprised you’re still clinging to my husband like a desperate whore," she spat at . "After our little talk, I thought you’d have more self-respect."
I looked up slowly, eting her eyes with a smile. "How could I be a howrecker for a ho that was already wrecked long before I even ca into the picture? One you wrecked with your hands,"
Victoria’s face twisted with rage. "You little bitch. Let’s see if you’re still that confident when I’m done with you."
She stord out, slamming the door behind her. The second she was gone, Finnegan let out a sigh, crossed the room in two strides, and pulled into his arms.
He held tightly, pressing his lips to my forehead.
"I’m sorry you had to go through that," he murmured against my hair. "You didn’t deserve a single word of it."
I lted into his chest, wrapping my arms around his waist. "It’s okay. I can handle her. I know what we have is real. She’s just... a crazy person."
He huffed. "An understatent, really. I’ll make this right," he promised. "I swear."
At the close of work, I stood in the parking lot with Finnegan, the evening sun casting long shadows over my car.
"I’ll see you later," I told him, squeezing his hand. "I’m eting Annette at our old apartnt. We need to pick up so clothes and stuff we left behind."
He frowned, clearly reluctant to let go. "I should be eting my lawyers about what to do with Victoria. I’ll see you at ho?"
"You will." I blew him a kiss, dropping into a dramatic curtsey when he opened the car door for to get in.
The drive to Annette’s and my apartnt took about twenty minutes. When I reached the door, however, sothing made freeze.
There was a sar of blood on the ground before the door. My heart slamd against my chest.
We were supposed to et here to figure out how to go after Gavin, but it seed Gavin had co to us!
